POSITION: FORWARD

YOUTH TEAM: oakland jr. grizzlies u16

hometown:detroit, michigan

Owen Michaels has had a busy month. The 123rd pick of the 2018 USHL Phase I draft spent a weekend with the Team USA U17’s in mid-Novmeber before making his Stars debut in the two days following Thanksgiving. The four games combined have proved valuable to the 16-year old as he continues to develop his game.

“It was a lot different than the AAA level,” said Michaels of his time with Team USA and the Stars. “The game’s a lot faster and there’s less time and space to make a play. It kind of makes you get the puck off your stick faster. It really emphaiszed the importance of working hard every shift, and being able to pay attention to detail. It defi-nitely helped me gain a lot of confidence. Just getting the time to play at that level with bigger, faster, older guys helped me adjust when I came back to Oakland and just in general with understanding what it takes to succeed at the next level.”

Michaels was not alone when he traveled to Urbandale, Iowa to join Lincoln for their competition against Des Moines back on November 23rd. He was accompanied by two fellow Oakland Jr. Grizzlies in forwards Ben Steeves and Dominic James. All three were Stars selections in this year’s USHL Phase-I draft, and the trio regu-larly plays together with the Jr. Grizzlies. With this pre-existing chemistry, the Stars not only kept the line togeth-er during their recall, but named them the starting line in their Stars debut.

“Yeah getting the chance to come up and play with my teammates was great,” said Michaels. “It makes it easier having a few people you’re comfortable with to help you get adjusted right away. When you get on the bus and in the locker room and already know a couple guys, it really helps you get comfortable.”

Michaels has flourished at the U16 level as his confidence and game continue to grow. In 23 games, he’s tallied six goals and 19 assists, tied for the Grizzlies points lead.

“I’m a skilled playmaker that thinks the game well,” said Michaels. “I have a good hockey IQ that helps me make plays and be a difference-maker on the ice and with certain things that don’t necessarily show up on the score-sheet.”

With plenty of hockey left to play in 2018-19, Michaels is focused on continuing to build on what appears to be a blossoming career, one that the Stars will follow with plenty of excitement.

“I want to win the State and National Championship, and I really want to win the HPHL,” he said. “As far as myself, I just want to keep working hard, getting bigger, faster, and stronger, and doing what I need to do so that I can come into Stars camp next summer and impress.”
