LAST TIME OUT..Bethlehem Steel FC enters Sunday afternoon’s match coming off its second-consecutive one-goal loss, falling 1-0 to Eastern Conference leading Charleston Battery. In the early morning kickoff on a rainy day at Goodman Stadium, the Battery’s Romario Williams provided the only offense needed, as he scored his league-leading eighth goal of the season in the 32nd minute. Steel FC nearly knotted up the match but James Chambers’ long distance strike was denied by the woodwork. Goalkeeper Jake McGuire made six saves in the match.

STEEL FC FACES SHORT TURNAROUND IN HOMESTAND

Steel FC will battle in-state rival Harrisburg City Islanders in the series only matchup at Goodman Stadium this season. Sunday’s contest will be Bethlehem’s third match in eight days, with Steel FC looking to buck its trend that has seen the club fall short in back-to-back one goal losses. The game will the fifth all-time meeting between the two clubs but just the second to take place on Steel FC’s home field.

LAST REGULAR SEASON MEETING:

Steel FC faced off against its rival in the club’s first road match of the season. Despite first career goals from Santi Moar and Chris Nanco, Harrisburg claimed all three points on a 90th minute goal from substitute Cardel Benbow to push Harrisburg to its third victory over Steel FC.

CONNEH REWRITE STEEL FC RECORD BOOK WITH GOALWith his penalty kick conversion last weekend at Cincinnati that knotted the match up at 1-1, 21-year-old forward Seku Conneh became the club’s all-time leader in goals scored. Conneh’s goal was his sixth goal in just 26 appearances with Steel FC and broke a tie with Cory Burke, Derrick Jones and Ryan Ritcher.Already surpassing his goal total from 2016, Conneh will now look to break the club’s single season goal mark. The Liberian forward needs just two to rewrite that record as well.

CHAMBERS SET TO ECLIPSE MORE CLUB RECORDSVeteran midfielder James Chambers has brought many things to Steel FC since joining the squad in 2016. After adapting to American soccer, the Dublin, Ireland native made his 29th start on Thursday against Charleston. Already the club’s all-time leader in appearances, Chambers will break the record with his next start and sits just 27 minutes from becoming the club’s leader in minutes played.

On the game…“Disappointed with the result, and I thought we lacked discipline defensively in the second half in terms of our overall shape. We left a lot of space in midfield and we were exposedfor it quite a bit. I thought Jake [McGuire] did a great job keeping us in the game. On the flip side of it, we created a lot of opportunities to serve the ball in the box and the service just wasn’t close to good enough. Two major areas to improve on. If you connect 528 passes in a game, you have to create more meaningful goal-scoring opportunities.”

On if it is an advantage or disadvantage to play City Islanders in just three days on Sunday...“I think in this case it’s definitely an advantage, because for all the possession we had and for all the crossing opportunities we created, we were a little bit toothless today. That’s the word I would use. From the defensive side of it, we have to get back to our system. I thought we abandoned it a little bit in the second half, because guys were pressing and we have to trust in it and know that the first 15-20 minutes of the game were excellent and that our chances will come if we stick to the script.”

On what he expects from Harrisburg…“I’m expecting them to try to counter us, to sit in and counter. We’ll go back and look at their game in its entirety from Charleston. It’s good that we just played the same opponent, but we’ve seen them a number of times now. We know that they have good individual players and it will be a difficult task.”

RECORD DEBUTS FOR STEEL FCWhile the rain poured down at Goodman Stadium, forward Yosef Samuel and Philadelphia Union Academy midfielder Dawson McCartney registered their first professional starts in the USL. The duo became the ninth and 10th different players to earn their first pro starts this season for Steel FC.

17-YEAR-OLD REAL GOES THE DISTANCEIn just his third start, second as a professional, left back Matt Real has made team history by becoming the club’s youngest field player to play a full 90 minutes. Real, only 17, signed with the club in January out of the Union Academy.

Burke is in his second season as head coach of Bethlehem Steel FC, coaching the squad to a 9-20-10 record over his tenure. He was formally introduced as the club’s first head coach on Oct. 29, 2015. Prior to joining Steel FC, Burke served as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Union from 2011 through 2014. He was heavily involved in all levels of the U.S. Soccer pyramid, including serving as head coach of the Union’s PDL affiliate Reading United from 2008-13 where he had a record of 71-18-19. During his time with Reading, Burke coached 49 players that signed professional contracts including Ray Gaddis, C.J. Sapong, John McCarthy and Matt Hedges. Burke served as associate head coach at Northeastern University in 2015.

Cook is in his second season as an assistant coach with Bethlehem Steel FC and currently serves as head coach for the U-18 team at the Philadelphia Union Academy. Cook coached the U-16 team from 2013-15 and under his leadership, the U-16 squad had one of its best seasons in 2014-15. The club finished 21-3-2 and earned the No. 2 national seed in the USSDA playoffs. The team fin-ished third at the national semifinals in Carson, Calif. Prior to joining the academy, Cook served as the head coach of Dartmouth College for 12 years. While at Dart-mouth, Cook led the program to five conference titles and seven trips to the NCAA tournament, including a pair of Sweet 16 appearances.

Hogan is in his second season with Steel FC. He also serves as the head coach of the Philadelphia Union’s PDL affiliate, Reading United. In his first season as Reading’s head coach, Hogan led the team to a 10-3-1 record, the Mid-Atlantic Division title, and an appearance in the Eastern Conference finals. He made 52 appearances for Reading, while playing from 2007-10, and holds the second-most appearances in club history. He led the team to the 2009 PDL regular season title and the PDL national semifinals in 2008 and 2010. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Hogan spent two seasons as head coach at the College of Saint Rose’s men’s soccer program. While on the staff of the Albany, N.Y. based college, Hogan established the Golden Knights training program, was active in recruiting players and monitored the academic progress of his student athletes.

Cooney brings vast experience to Steel FC and is in his second season as goalkeepers coach and video coordinator. Before joining Steel FC, Cooney served on several women’s soccer championship staffs: the Bay Area CyberRays in 2001 and FC Gold Pride in 2009. He was the goalkeeper coach for the Stanford women’s soccer team from 2003-14. During his time with Stanford, the team had a 73-match home unbeaten streak, a 64-match regular season unbeaten streak, a 51-match home winning streak, eight consecutive NCAA Sweet Sixteen and a NCAA Championship in 2011. Cooney also serves as the Philadelphia Union Academy head goalkeeping coach and the Director of Video Technology.

2017 Season Waite has yet to make an appearance for Bethlehem Steel FC in his first amateur campaign in the USL in 2017. Waite was part of the matchday 18 for the club’s opening match against Rochester (4/1), against FC Cincinnati (4/29) and on the road at Toronto FC II (5/13).

2017 Preseason Waite appeared in a pair of Steel FC preseason matches, coming in as a substitute in both matches. Waite got his first taste of professional soccer, playing the final 30 minutes against Junior Lone Star FC on Feb. 22. Waite also appeared against Villanova, starting the second half in the March 1 contest.

Made the club’s matchday 18 against FC Cincinnati (4/29) but did not appear. 2017 Preseason McMaster appeared in two matches during Steel FC’s preseason slate and scored a pair of goals. McMaster made a pair of subsitute appearances against Junior Lone Star FC and Villanova, coming on in the second half of both games. McMaster capitalized against Junior Lone Star FC on February 22, netting a brace in the second half.
