We encourage all parents to sign up for NPPSD’s School Bea-

con. Beacon is the phone system that allows the school to

send messages to parents via your home phone or cell phone.

If you did not receive a phone message when we had the snow

day, you are not registered on Beacon. We will be notifying

you of school closings or emergencies through the School Bea-

con system, so it is very important that you register. If you

have a computer just go to the www.nppsd.org

and then on the right hand sign you will see a

School Beacon icon. Click on the icon and it

will take you through the steps to register. If

you do not have access to a computer please

see Mrs. McMurtry in the office and she will get

you registered.

Recently I read an article that made a lot of sense to me. It was from the Love and Logic

Institute and was entitled, “Don’t Raise a Kid Who Depends on Being Smart.” It was writ-

ten by Dr. Charles Fay.

Dr. Fay has recently written a book entitled, Parenting Kids to Become the People Em-

ployers Really Want and America Desperately Needs.

I will include some of the ideas that Dr. Fay has recommended. Dr Fay suggests that too

many of us make a mistake when we respond to our children’s successes in ways that

condition them to give up when things get tough. For example, by continually telling our children how smart they are when

they learn new skills or succeed on tests we condition them to believe they are successful only because they are smart. This

can become a problem and this is why. It is not how smart we are that brings some of the

successes in life. Kids who believe that smartness is the key to success give up whenever

they encounter things that leave them feeling not-so-smart. Dr. Fay suggests that Kids who

believe that hard work and perseverance are the keys to success are more likely to keep

trying when things get tough.

This can be reinforced by parents when they talk with children about their successes. When

children are asked by parents, “How did you do that so well?” and children shrug their shoul-

ders, parents have a golden opportunity to ask the following questions, “Did you work hard?

Have you been practicing? Or did you keep trying?” When children can begin to identify

and verbalize these answers, they begin to feel confident and they believe they have what it

takes to keep going when the going gets tough.

The Lincoln School Kindergartners are busy working on assessments for our third quarter report cards. In kindergarten each child meets with their teacher one-on-one to discuss and show what type of knowledge has been gained throughout the year. Each child has the full attention of the teacher as the student performs tasks that demonstrate how well concepts have been grasped and mastered.

We look forward to seeing each and every family represented at our Parent-Teacher Conferences on March 11 and 12. If you have not already received a conference note appointment request and/or confir-mation of your conference time, please call the Lincoln School office at 535-7138.

Once again, please work with your

child to learn how to zip, button and tie their own garments. It takes a very big chunk

of time away from our learning when teachers have to stop and tie 21 pairs of shoes,

zip 21 coats and button 21 pairs of jeans. Thanks for your help :)

Preschool home visits/parent teacher conferences will be held on Friday, February 26th, Friday, March 5th, and Wednesday, March 10th. We look forward to sharing with parents the progress their child is making this school year.

During the month of March we will count our lion and lamb days. We are hoping we have more lamb days. We will also learn about the weather this month and make our own weather wheels. Throughout this month we will learn nursery rhymes and enjoy reading Dr. Seuss books. We will be making green eggs and ham for St. Patrick’s Day. We will also have a special week in March for moms to eat breakfast or lunch with their preschooler and spend time in the classroom.

On Friday March 4, our students enjoyed reading books to their dads and the volunteers. Everyone

enjoyed reading and the doughnuts, too.

We have had a fun week celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Read Across America Week. This new

skill is exciting to celebrate and practice.

We are really proud of our students growth in reading and math. We can’t wait to show you at Parent

Teacher’s conferences coming up March 11 and 12. If the time we scheduled doesn’t work, please

contact us. We really want to visit with each of you. Thank you for sending back the note to let us know your preferred times.

That makes it so much easier to schedule.

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour March 14. Daylight Savings Time begins again. We want your child here on time.

Our science units have been about solids. And soon we will be learning about liquids. The children enjoy learning about the differ-

ent kinds of matter. They always love doing the experiments and exploring.

Thank you for your continued help with homework and reading at home. It does make a difference. Mrs. Dymond & Ms. Kubes

The third grade classes recently joined together to celebrate the success of 100% of the students reaching the 25 point club in AR. They had a "Superbowl" party with popcorn, pop, and a movie.

Multiplication has been our focus in Math. We have now learned the facts from 0-10. In the next weeks we will learn about division.

The first week of March is Dr. Suess' birthday and we will take the opportunity to celebrate with a variety of activities.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be March 11-12. We look forward to seeing you and appreciate that you

take the time to visit with us about your child's education.

Mrs. Aurich & Mrs. Bryant

Fourth grade students are learning “how we ought to be” through lessons on writing fables. We have discovered that fables teach life lessons through animals as characters. Soon students will be writing fables of their own.

We have moved on from Native Americans to pioneers In Ne-braska history.

Logical thinking and problem solving strategies as the topic in math.

We are wrapping up our lessons on nutrition in health class.

4th graders did an amazing job this month earning Accelerated Reading points. Keep reading at

home!

Mrs. Davis & Ms. Slack

We are patiently awaiting spring in our 2nd grade classes. It has finally been warm enough to go outside

for recess!

In Math, our 2nd grade students have been learning about money. They have learned the names of the

coins, how much they are worth, how to count amounts of coins, and how to make change. This has

been a tough concept for our students to master. It would be greatly appreciated if the students could

practice with money at home. Next, we will be learning about time. We are hoping that each student

has an analog, not digital, clock in the home to practice with.

In Science, we have been learning about energy, including sound, light, heat, and temperature. We have completed many fun,

exciting, and educational experiments. We are continuing to work on heat energy and will move on to changes. We will learn how

gases, solids, and liquids change form.

We have an exciting event coming up in April! We are going to take a field trip to see a play at the

community playhouse. This should be a great learning experience for our students. We are preparing

for this event by reading books about our play character. Our play is about Nate the Great, who is

child detective who tries to solve fun and interesting mysteries.

We would like to remind parents and students that Fridays are “Spirit Day” and we would love for our

2nd grade classes to win the award for the most students wearing school colors. So, please, please

wear either a blue or a gold(yellow) shirt on Fridays. Thank you! Miss Dehr and Ms. Weigel

This school year is quickly passing by and I am very pleased with the progress all of my students are making in reading since the

beginning of the year. I appreciate all of the extra reading done at home with family and friends! It really helps their reading scores

when they get the extra time to read outside of school. I can really see an improvement in the students that have been reading out-

side of school every night.

With spring approaching it can be a very busy time of the year for many families with sports and activities. We need to make sure that our children are receiving plenty of sleep to ensure they are reading at their full potential. Please encourage your child to read thirty -minutes or more at home each night to keep all the progress going made at home and school. This is especially important over a long period of time they are not in school. Thanks for all the help. Mrs. McCarthy & Mrs. Willis

Thank you to Melissa Garcia for being part of Lincolns Kids Klub and Entrepreneurship week in February. The first week of March is National Read Across America and is celebrated with Dr. Suess. Volunteers from Madison Middle School, the High School and RSVP Members will come and read to the kids. These special volunteers will be reading Dr. Suess books, having Dr. Suess activi-ties and some special guest may appear and somewhere a Cat in the Hat will make an appearance. Due to the short month I will be using these volunteers for reading activities and there will be no Public Library Days for Lincoln in March. Lincoln and Buffalo have the planned Mega day on March 10th and then there is no school through the 16th for winter break. School will resume again on Wed March 17th. One field trip planned for this month is to the Weather Station on Friday March 26th.

Kids Klub is buzzing with activities this month and it is a joy to share with your children.

Laurel Perkins, Kids Klub Coordinator

They're coming! They're coming! That's right, it's Parent Teacher Conference time again. Please check with your student for the note with your scheduled time. We make every effort to coordinate times according to your requests and the number of children you have in your family. Your fam-ily's conferences should run consecutively. We especially need fifth grade parents to attend, be-cause we will need to discuss middle school options. We hope to see you there.

One of our fifth graders has been going to high school! That's right, but not to attend classes. Cody Hart is one of the cast members of the musical, "Joseph and the Technicolor

Dreamcoat," to be performed at the high school. Practices started in January and now that the musical is only days away, practices take up three nights a week. It's a great show. Check it out and support Cody during the March 12th weekend.

Mr. Deutschman and Mrs. Volcek

Fifth Grade Notes

Thank you to all that donated to the American Heart Association in Jump Rope for Heart. The second graders won the competition

generating $150. Way to go!! Mariah Stevens was the school leader in collecting $100.

The third, fourth and fifth graders are participating in the PE Challenge. They have six challenges to complete in order to earn a gold

medal. It is a mini winter Olympics and the kids are going for the gold, silver and bronze medals.

Looking ahead we have scheduled Field Day for Friday May 21st. I will be asking for volunteers to help. I will send home more infor-

mation later. The day is special for the kids at the end of the school year and we plan to have a lot of fun.

Remember to encourage your kids to keep physically active and to eat healthy. Healthy body supports a healthy mind producing

better students. Mrs. Perry
