• Use only 1 message• Reduce the scope of the article (better write 2!)• Use a clear title that reflects that message

• Carefully review instructions for Authors• Each Journal has its own requirements • What is the format for submission?

– Online / disc; MS Word / PDF– Separate submission for graphics/tables

• What are the publication deadlines?• Is a stand alone abstract required?• Is a fee involved?• Disclosure statements necessary?

• Submit and verify receipt!

• Preliminary review by one of the managing Editors• Peer review by co-editors• Process may take several weeks/months

• Initial rejection possible

Common mistakes leading to initial rejection

• Copyright violation• Improper/Incomplete referencing• Poorly written (grammar/spelling)• Data not adequately supported• Insufficient original work• Did not properly follow submission requirements

Copyright Issues

• Be prepared to provide Copyright Permission where appropriate

• Includes photographs, artwork, non-original charts and graphs

• Clarify how can you use the article AFTER publication?

Reference Issues

• Which format is being followed?• Carefully study examples given• Verify that all references are actually cited• Do not use abstracts as references• If the reference is a website, be prepared to provide an

archived copy

• Conditionally accepted with Request for Revision

• Don't take it personally!• Feel free to ask for further explanation if reasons are

unclear• Be aware of re-submission deadlines and format

• Galley proof should be provided prior to final publication

• Varies by Publication – Short as 1-2 months– Long as 6-9 months

• Verify how Authors receive publication copy
