Step OneArtificial Light: How to use it.

Page 3: Lighting Lesson: Step One

Artificial light is that which is produced from a light bulb of some kind. It can be a simple 100watt light bulb, a 500watt photo-flood or a sophisticated, professional flash unit. This presentation is the first in a series which will cover all the basic lighting setups.

Studio Flash unit with umbrella reflector. Reflector will direct the light.

500watt Photo Flood Bulb. No reflector. So the light will not be aimed anywhere in particular. It will shine 360 degrees.

In order to create a lighting effect, light needs to be DIRECTED!

For this, we need a REFLECTOR of some kind.

Reflectors will aim the light in a specific direction.

Page 6: Lighting Lesson: Step One

This effect is called a “Side Lighting.” It is produced by putting the light and reflector to the side of the subject. Usually 90 degrees from the camera position.

This is one of the simplest lightings to set up. You will need a light bulb, a reflector and a light stand. All readily available from your local camera store.

See if you can successfully complete this first lighting setup. If you have questions, please
