Why aren’t there any dog parks at Naval Base Ventura County?

Question: Would it be feasible to have an off-leashdog park at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC)Point Mugu?I recently moved to Mugu and absolutely love the

atmosphere and facilities. The only thing I am miss-ing is a way to socialize and exercise my dog. I havenoticed while jogging around that many of the dogshave developed some fence aggression, and I thinkadding a dog park would help alleviate this.If it were possible, I could be willing to commit

my own time and energy to organizing, fundraisingor maintaining such an area. I also thought LincolnHousing could possibly be involved in a project likethis to add to the wonderful community center theyhave already given us!

Answer: A project to construct dog parks at bothPort Hueneme and Point Mugu is currently beingdeveloped. With the input of the NBVC veterinarian, the Pub-

lic Works Department is in the process of designingeach park to be both people- and dog-friendly.The Point Mugu park will be at the south loop of

Terrier Drive near Main Road, and the Port Huen-eme park will be at the existing Kiddie Park at cornerof Goodspeed Street and Bard Lane. The parks will be approximately 1.5 acres each

and will consist of a fully fenced area with limitedseating, sanitary waste mitts and collection pointsand a simple wash-down system.Construction is expected to start in October and

be complete in December.

Chief Equipment Operator (SCW/PJ)Joshua Petraitis sounded calm as hemadethe call from the Naval ConstructionTraining Center (NCTC).“No, the building is not on fire,”he told

the emergency dispatcher. “But I thinkpeople may be trapped. It looks like thereis excessive flooding – there’s water every-where – and the roof collapsed under pres-sure.”It was the beginning of another exercise

during the two-dayCitadel Rumble, whichtook place at Naval Base Ventura Countyand throughout the North and SouthwestRegions onMonday and Tuesday, July 18and 19.The annual drill gives first responders

and other personnel on base and through-out the region practice on how to reactduring a natural disaster. The scenario inpast years has involved earthquakes –hence the name “Citadel Rumble” – butthis year’s involved a major storm thatdamaged buildings and caused floodingand landslides. In addition to the collapsed roof at

NCTC, supposed damage included a bar-racks fire at San Nicolas Island that“killed” three, a collapsed roof at theMugu barracks, another collapsed roofat the Child Development Center at Port

Hueneme that forced the evacuation of apreschool classroom, and flooding of aserver room that temporarily knocked outthe base computer system.Robert Huether, installation training

officer and lead coordinator of the event, said about 200 people took part.

“It’s gone really well,” he said as thesecond daywrapped up. “It’s good for firstresponders to be able to practice largeevents like this.”As he spoke, several firefighters from

Naval Base Ventura County Federal Firewere tending to the “wounded” stretchedout on color-coded tarps that made up atriage unit outside theNCTC.The red tarpwas for those needing immediate attention, yellow was for those for whom treatmentcould wait, greenwas for those withminorinjuries and black was for the deceased. The firefighters, some carrying thermal

imagers so they could locate people insmoke- and debris-filled rooms, hadsearched theNCTC and taken out the five“victims,”placing them on the appropriatetarps. For purposes of the exercise, each“victim”wore a card around the neck stat-ing the type of injury he or she had sup-posedly sustained.“An impaled object in the chest?” one

firefighter read aloud. “That wouldn’t bea minor injury,” and off to the red tarpthe Seabee went.Brad Jones, training chief for Fed Fire,

called the exercise practical and neces-sary.“This is an excellent exercise in that it

gives us training for something that couldreally happen,”he said. “It’s beneficial forall base personnel.”

What do you do to curb the summerdoldrums? I polled my friends with kidsand did I get great ideas!Alicia planned a summer kids program

for the children of her command, utilizingthe resources right on base. She arrangedfor tours of the firehouse, the kennel andworking dogs, the commissary, the libraryand even a tour of the bowling alley andmovie theater. To top off the summer shearranged for a special matinee movie atthe CYP, complete with popcorn.Kaua launched a “character” summer

with her neighbor. Together they launchedweekly scavenger hunts that required thechildren to explore various aspects ofcharacter, such as perseverance throughchallenging activities or helping otherscomplete the “hunt.”Sylvia established goals for each of her

three children with milestones along theway to celebrate. Candi is learning toswim, Josiah is learning about business bylaunching a lawn mowing service in hisneighborhood and Molly is learning toride a two-wheel bike. And all three arelearning to bake their favorite cookie.Phoebe wanted to lose weight this sum-

mer and felt she wanted to keep the kidsaway from the television and computer. She launchedwhat she is calling her “Sum-mer Olympics.”Every two weeks she andthe children add a new physical activityor skill. They have learned geo-caching(their favorite) and are building their bikeriding endurance on the paths near theirhouse with a goal of a family four-milebike ride. They start each day walkingtheir dog and increasing their route. Phoe-be is down 11 pounds so far but says,“Growing closer as a family is the realbonus.”Danielle and her children have taken up

agility training with their dogs. They wentto the library to research agility competi-tion and training, then joined a local clubto learn more. So far they have built fouragility stations together and have success-fully trained their Labrador and Scottiein three of the four. Their goal is to entertheir dogs in their first competition thisfall.Debra and her Marine put their teens

in charge of their monthly “staycation”plans. They were given a budget to workwith and the task of researching attrac-tions in the area, mapping the route, plan-ning the event and managing the budgetfor the monthly event. They had to learnto work together, compromise, rely oneach other’s strengths and develop newskills. Each event is more successful thanthe previous, and, Debra said, the “teensare actually enjoying working and beingtogether.”With a little creativity and enlisting your

children in the process, the summer dol-drums can become the best summer spenttogether — ever.— Connect with Beth Wilson at www.facebook.com/EnlistedSpouseCommunity.

Learning to read is the first step. Lovingto read is the next. For so many students, the latter is the

more difficult of the two. Once a studentfinds a topic or storyline that sparks aninterest, reading for hours ceases to bedifficult. For many students, the key isfinding a series of books that intereststhem. With a series of books, the readingdoesn’t have to stop once one book isread.A series of books will typically share

genres, settings and characters. Sometimesstorylines will carry over from one bookto the next. However, timelines are notalways chronological according to whenthe books are published. Many times areader will enjoymany of the books in theseries if interested in one of them. Many teachers will agree that finding a

book series will encourage an interest inreading. Once that interest in a certaingenre is found, another similar book seriesor author can usually be found. There are some simple ways to help your

child select a book that is just right.Makesure that your child is interested in thebook.Make sure he/she can read and fig-

ure out almost all the words. Also, makesure that he/she understands the story andcan tell you what it is about. Listen tohim/her read. The reader should be ableto read smoothly. If your child is stum-bling over words, he or she will not be ableto focus on reading for understanding. The following list can be used as a guide-

line to find a book series. Reading andinterest level will also determine whereyour child’s interest may be found.

First GradeThe Dragon Series (Dave Pilkey): This

series features an awkward, smiling dino-saur character who shares his experienceshe faces in his simple everyday tasks.Fly Guy (Tedd Arnold): Fly Guy is a

funny “super hero” fly. The squiggly il-lustrations are hilarious.

Second/Third GradeA to ZMysteries (RonRoy): This series

features three smart kids who solve crimeand mysteries. The name of the series de-rives itself from the titles of the stories, from Absent Author to Zombie Zone.Magic Tree House (Mary Pope Os-

borne): Jack and Annie are a brother andsister who discover a magical tree housethat takes them on journeys through timeto different places around the world.JudyMoody (MeganMcDonald): Judy

is a fun and funny young character — athird grader with plenty of attitude. Stu-dents will learn new facts from algebra topirate lore, endangered species to theAmerican Revolution.

Fourth/Fifth GradeA Series of Unfortunate Events (Lem-

ony Snicket): The unfortunate adventuresof three siblings who have been placed inthe custody of a greedy distant cousin

after the death of their parents.Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Rick

Riordan): This series falls in the action/adventure genre. It is based onGreek my-thology. Percy discovers he is the son ofPoseidon and finds that beings of Greekmythology still exist today on themythical600th floor of the Empire State Build-ing.Zibby Payne (Alison Bell): Zibby is an

outspoken tomboy who has many life les-sons to learn while trying to find her placeamong friends.

TeensArtemis Fowl (Eoin Colfer): Fantasy

novels starring a teenage criminal master-mind. According to the author, this seriesis “like Die Hard with fairies.”Dark Materials Series: Starting with

The Golden Compass, this series is abouta precocious orphan growing up in a uni-verse in which science, theology andmag-ic are closely allied.— For more books and book series ideas forchildren in kindergarten through 12th grade,or any K-12 education-related questions, please contact the NBVC school liaisonofficer at 989-5211 or monica.james@navy.

I believe it was Benjamin Franklin whosaid, “In this world there is nothing thatis certain except death and taxes.” Thoseof us who live in the military world couldadd a third: deployments. As a husband, father and Navy chap-

lain facing yet another deployment, I amalways torn between my sense of duty tocountry and love for my family. I think Ispeak for all service members in sayingto our loved ones, “I don’t want to leaveyou. I hate being without you, but myduty demands we make the sacrifice.”However, is the sacrifice worth it? It’s

a fair question that many family memberscan’t help but ask and to which I offerthese thoughts.First of all, our duty is noble and righ-

teous. Not only is it selfless to enduredanger and hardship to help an oppressedpeople gain the freedom and security weall enjoy, but a free and stable worldpurged of strong terrorist interferencewill make the world a safer place for allof us, especially our children. If genera-tions to come are to enjoy peace andsafety the war against terrorism must bewaged and won now. Our duty is not justto country but primarily to the securityof our family and friends at home.Secondly, and this is sometimes espe-

cially hard for spouses to understand, oursense of duty in great part defines us as

men and women of honor. Without astrong sense of duty life has no purpose.Without a noble and righteous duty toperform, strength of character and com-mitment cannot be formed in us or growto full maturity. As much as you may betempted to believe your loved one’s senseof duty comes before their love for you, consider this: If they would shirk theirduty to country and career, what makesyou think they wouldn’t shirk their dutyto you?It is the demonstration of this strength

of character and commitment to countryand career that contributes to your con-fidence and assurance that your loved onehas the character to remain committedto you. To question this honorable senseof duty is to undermine the very thing

that defines him or her as a person worthhaving and loving. Admittedly, we ser-vice members— and the commands whoown us — all need to do a better job ofbalancing our commitments to duty andfamily, but the two can never be sepa-rated. Neither can be forsaken withoutalso forsaking the other! So for those who stay at home and wait

for their loved one’s return, I applaudyou for understanding and making thissacrifice with your service member. Youare our essential partners in fulfilling theduty we’ve been given to perform. You“keep the home fires burning” while weare away. You are the ones that motivateus to succeed. You are the warriors thatmost uphold us to God in prayer. Yourlove is most on our minds, and you arethe ones we most long to return to whenour job is done. You are the reason werisk our lives to make the world a betterplace. As much as you need our strength, we

need yours. Help your service memberstay focused on his or her duty by pa-tiently understanding their absence. Tellthem you love them all the more for beinga person of such character and commit-ment. And above all else, may we all lookto God with an unshakable faith worthyof the one who fulfilled the ultimate dutyfor each of us on the cross.

By all accounts, it was indeed a greatSeabee day.About 300 community leaders, Naval

Base Ventura County personnel and cur-rent and retired Seabees attended theFriday, July 22, ribbon-cutting of thenew U.S. Navy Seabee Museum just out-side the gates of NBVC Port Huen-eme.“It was a long and arduous road, but

we did it!” said Museum Director LaraGodbille, who, since October, has beenoverseeing the cataloging and movingof 12,000 artifacts and 9,000 linear feetof documents — more than 350 palletsof material — from two postwar Quon-set huts to the new 38,000-square foot,state-of-the-art building.Community and Navy leaders agreed

the museum will be a big draw to thearea.Capt. Jim McHugh, commanding of-

ficer of the base, said tourists will wantto visit, families will want to share theirNavy heritage with their children andgrandchildren, and local residents will

want to learn about an integral part ofthe local community.“People can come here and learn about

the immense impact Seabees have hadhere in Ventura County,” he said. “Overthe past 60 years, Seabees have raisedfamilies here, served their communityand helped make this the best place tolive.”NBVC and the city of Port Hueneme

were praised for their cooperative effortsto move the museum outside the gatesso visitors don’t have to get a specialpass for base access.“Making it easily accessible to the

community was important,” said RearAdm. Christopher Mossey, commanderof the Naval Facilities Engineering Com-mand and Chief of Civil Engineers, whocalled the building “spectacular.”“The best part about it is that it can

be expanded,” he added. “After all, Sea-bees are making history every day.”The museum is the second-oldest of

the Navy’s 11 museums.“It is simply superb,” retired Rear

The chiefs and officers of NavalMobile Construc-tion Battalion (NMCB) 40, along with the battalion’ssquad leaders, recently completed their respective an-nual Field Training Exercises. The two-week courses, instructed by the 31st Sea-

bee Readiness Group, were divided into one week ofclassroom instruction onboard Naval Base VenturaCounty, Port Hueneme, followed by a one-week prac-tical application at Camp Pendleton Marine CorpsBase for the chiefs and officers and Camp Robertsfor the squad leaders. The classroom portion for the chiefs and officers

focused on big picture topics, including convoy op-erations and defensive tactics, while the squad leadersengaged in smaller unit topics such as fighting posi-tions, the placement of crew-served weapons andconcertina wire placement. There were many opportunities for members to be

up front and brief the entire class on the given mis-sion.Many of the learning objectives forced themem-bers to work in teams to accomplish the desired out-come.Following the conclusion of the classroom portion,

the chiefs and officers left for Camp Pendleton. Theweek began with a barbecue and “friendly” softballgame before the topics discussed the previous weekcould be put to use in a field setting.Land navigation at the Marine Corps’ School of

Infantry led off the exercise, followed by defensivetactics, Forward Operating Base security, tacticalconvoy simulator and numerous scenarios at theCom-bat Operations Training Center.Along with the individual skills obtained by each

member, many of the situations and scenarios focusedon the leadership’s ability to receive a mission froma higher command and deliver the mission at the bat-talion level. Communication skills and planning werethe emphasis of much of the training. The weekended with a dining-in at the Camp Pendleton GolfCourse before a return to Port Hueneme.More than 60 squad leaders concluded their week

of classroom instruction and traveled north to CampRoberts for a week of practical training in the field. The topics discussed the week prior were put to useas the members dug fighting positions, placed morethan 600 meters of concertina wire and worked onthe strategic placement of their crew-served weapons.A highlight of the week was their opportunity todetonate M18A1 Claymore mines and throw M67hand grenades.

“The energy and endurance combined with thetraining tempo and squad motivation made this anenjoyable learning experience that I won’t forget,”said Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Antoine Jones. The learning and experience gained by the leader-

ship of NMCB 40 will prove valuable as the battalioncontinues through its fast-paced homeport trainingschedule in preparation for its upcoming Pacific Com-mand deployment.

Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion(NMCB) 40 recently conducted a training exercise to createa water well at Fort Hunter Liggett. The 21 Seabees fromNMCB 40 drilled more than 600 feet

into the Earth’s crust before they began pumping water. TheSeabees completed their training on June 3.Equipment Operator ConstructionmanCrystalMorris was

among the team.“Water well team training was a great experience,” she said.

“I learned a great deal about the entire operation, from trip-ping-in to tripping-out with drill steel to doing a thousandmud tests to ensure proper viscosity and sand content. Itwasn’t bad. We got dirty and it was fun!”The group was divided into two teams working 12-hour

shifts to ensure round-the-clock operations as the well wasbeing developed. Upon completion of the well, the crew aban-doned it and its operation in accordance with MontereyCounty’s guidelines. The water well team training provided by the 31st Seabee

Readiness Group’s Contingency Construction Crew Training(R73) is a requirement the battalionmust obtain every home-port.“When Seabees deploy to the Pacific Theatre of Operation,

water wells are an essential part of the humanitarian effortswe do to foster goodwill,” said Construction Mechanic 1stClass AndrewDuchscher, assistant officer in charge of waterwells for the 2011 drilling team. “Being able to do this forpeople who don’t have fresh water is a great thing. The peo-ple from those countries really appreciate it.”Before going to Fort Hunter Liggett, Seabees who are con-

sidered “drillers” attend a “C” school in China Lake, wherethey become certified through the Navy’s Enlisted Classifica-tion system (NEC 5707). These drillers learn the in-depthnecessities of water well drilling.“Four of the 21 personnel who attended the training are

certified 5707 drillers,” said Duchscher. “So now it is our jobto ensure our knowledge gets down to the junior Seabees webring with us on deployments and ensure they understandthe basics well enough to perform as solid crew members.”

Cmdr. Fred C. Goldhammerrelieved Cmdr. Brent A. Trickelas commanding officer, CarrierAirborne Early Warning Squad-ron 117 (VAW-117) during achange of command ceremonyheld aboard Naval Base VenturaCounty, Point Mugu, on July14.Capt. GregoryN. Harris, com-

mander, Carrier Air Wing 11,served as the guest speaker.Since taking command inMay

2010, Trickel oversaw the squad-ron flying more than 850 hoursand 430 sorties. The squadroncompleted several notable accom-plishments, including transferringmultiple aircraft in and out of thesquadron and across the countryfor various aircraft upgrade pro-grams, completing a major in-spection and providing the firstever E-2C support to theU.S. AirForce Weapons School MissionExecution Phase.

“It’s a sad day for me, as I amleaving the best job in the Navy,”Trickel said. “I’m leaving behind140 people who were a pleasureto lead and work with every day.I feel that the squadron is mark-edly better now than it was whenI arrived, and I would love to stay

and see us through work-upsagain. However, I am lookingforward to my next job. Duringmy last tour at the Naval Strikeand Air Warfare Center, Idreamed about returning there tobe in charge of the WeaponsSchool. The fact that I get to take

over a job I have always wantedis exciting.”Goldhammer, formerly the

squadron’s executive officer, de-scribed how lucky he was to serveunder Trickel and that they saw“eye-to-eye on virtually every is-sue.” Thanks to that, the squad-ron shouldn’t expect any drasticchanges once he takes the reins, but rather a shift in focus to thenext challenge facing the Wall-banger team: deployment.“TheWallbanger mission is to

get ourselves, the CVW-11Barbwire Team and the NimitzStrike Group ready for combatdeployment in 2012,”Goldham-mer said.“The change of command cer-

emony gives us a chance to rem-inisce about and express ourgratitude to Cmdr. Trickel for hisleadership and contributions dur-ing his tenure as our commandingofficer,” he added. “In the biggerscheme of things, the change ofcommand isn’t really about any

single person, but rather aboutus, the Wallbanger team, as wereflect upon where we’ve been, where we stand today and wherewe’re headed.”Commenting on being selected

as the squadron’s 30th command-ing officer, Goldhammer stated,“Taking command of a sea-goingoperational squadron is the cul-mination of a 22-year long jour-ney that started when I first sworein as a Naval Academy midship-man. It’s hard to imagine how Icould ever top the experience ofleading the most talented groupof officers, chiefs and Sailors I’veever had the privilege of servingwith through the rigors of pre-deployment training. All this be-ing said, I want to come back tothe same point: The change ofcommand isn’t about me; rather,it’s about marking the team’sprogress towards our next mile-stone, specifically our prepara-tions for next year’s deploy-ment.”

Personnel from Naval SurfaceWarfare Center, Port Hueneme Di-vision, played a significant role inthe Royal Australian Navy (RAN)FFG 7 class ship StandardMissile-2 (SM-2) firing event held lastmonth. The June 13-20 event was the cul-

mination of a four-year effort.Conducted aboard the HMAS

Sydney (FFG 03) near the PacificMissile Range Facility BarkingSands, the event served as a com-bined development and operationaltest of the ability to deploy the SM-2 in mid-course guidance mode. While in this mode, the SM-2 is in-structed to only track the target

several seconds before the intercept, allowing the missile to fly silently.Personnel from Port Hueneme

were responsible for the design, de-velopment, integration and test ofthe software upgrade to the weaponscontrol processor of theMk 92 FireControl System, which is a key ele-ment in the system that provides thenew capability to launch SM-2 mis-siles from the Mk 13 launcher.“The main objective of the firing

event was to verify that the FFGcould engage targets with an SM-2operating in ‘mid-course guidance’mode,”said PaulDelPopolo,NSWCPort Hueneme software develop-ment project lead. “It is very satisfy-ing to see all the hard work the teamhas put into the project over the lastfew years, come together so nicelyin achieving the objective.”The primary benefit of mid-course

guidance mode is that it allows theSM-2 to fly silently without havingto provide constant illuminationduring its trajectory to the point ofintercept. This provides the missile

a better chance to fly undetected. In addition, this mode also allowsfor the engagement of threats atmuch farther ranges than prior tothe upgrade.A team effort, the successful fir-

ing event included NSWC PortHueneme, NSWC Indian Head,Johns Hopkins University AppliedPhysics Laboratory, BAE SystemsTechnology Solutions and Servicesand the Royal Australian Navy.NSWCPortHueneme hasworked

closely with the Royal AustralianNavy to deliver a combat-readymissile and associated combat sys-tem upgrades, aiding the allied ef-fort to protect national interests athome and abroad. This test event served as a way

forNSWCPort Hueneme personnelto assist a U.S. ally in meeting fu-ture operational requirements, whilealigning with the Chief of NavalOperations maritime strategy tofoster and sustain cooperative rela-tionships with international part-ners.

Scott and Jenelle Hatzung say they’ve al-ways believed in giving back to the com-munity that nurtured them. They also say, nearly in unison, that they’ve had a goodyear.Scott, 27, recently finished his bachelor’s

He then re-ceivedanaward fromtheOceanViewSchoolDistrict for volunteer work in reading thathe and his command did at Laguna VistaSchool near Naval Base Ventura County(NBVC).Earlier this month, Scott and Jenelle, 28,

learned they had been namedNavy Familyof the Year by the National Military Fam-ily Association inWashington, D.C.TheHatzungsmarried inApril 2009 and

NBVC School Liaison Officer MonicaJames, who nominated the Hatzungs. “Fora young Sailor who doesn’t have kids to setupa readingprogram like that says somuch.

Not only did they volunteer to do a readingprogram, but Scott helped raise $1,800 forsupplies for the school library.“Jenelle really stepped up as a volunteer.

When the two of them see a need, they findsolutions and fill it.”Scott said LagunaVista has a large num-

with them,”he said.“I just felt like the spouses have the tough-

gone to 13 schools,” Clements said of hisdaughter in a phone interview. “It was partof Navy life, and she never complained. I’msoproudof themboth. Scott is a greatman,a great Sailor.”“It was such a surprise,” Jenelle said of

the award. “But I sawmy parents being ac-tively involved with kids and volunteering

and howmuch they’ve done.”Her husband agreed.“They’re an inspiration to us,”he said. The couple say they plan to start a family

A delegation from the Republic of Ta-jikistan in Eastern Europe recently at-tended a seminar hosted by the NavalPostgraduate School’s Center for Asym-metic Warfare (CAW) to learn the besttechniques law enforcement and civilianagencies have developed to work togetherduring emergencies.Representatives from the Port Hueneme

Police Department, Port Hueneme CityHall and the OxnardHarbor District alsoattended the June 28 seminar, which in-cluded a tour of the Port of Hueneme, unique in its dual use bymilitary and civil-ian personnel. The tour was conducted aboard CAW’s

85-foot fast patrol craft, CAW-1, whichalso took the participants along the Ven-tura County coastline and to several off-shore oil and gas platforms.Discussion focused on how local, state,

federal, private and volunteer organiza-tions can best work together to coordinatea fast and effective response to an emer-gency or disaster, thereby limiting injuries, damage to property and loss of life.CAW demonstrated how those groups

use the National Incident ManagementSystem to coordinate emergency re-sponse.

In-depth discussions followed on thebenefits of having first responders usethe same terminologies and equipment.CAW also explained the different levels

of emergency activation commands, fromIncident Command Systems at city andlocal levels to Emergency OperationsCenters at county, state and federal lev-els.Noting that significant steps need to

be taken to put what they learned intopractice, Tajikistan representatives saidthey gained valuable insight into the ad-vantages of having responding organiza-tions integrate operations during a cri-sis.They said the lessons learned and best

practices collected by U.S. agenciesthrough the years will be of great valueand will contribute significantly to thesafety and security of Tajikstan.CAW, located at Naval Base Ventura

The biggest wave isn’t always the best. That and other surfing fundamentals

were key elements of a three-day surfingclinic offered through theNaval Base Ven-tura County youth sports program.A second clinic will be held Aug. 15, 17

and 19, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. each day.Cost is $60 per child.The first clinic drew 10 children. The

youngest was 9 years old; the oldest was14.“The hardest part is knowing when to

catch the wave so it doesn’t take youdown,” said Morgan Glover, 13, thedaughter of Karrie and Lt. Eric Gloverof the Fleet Readiness Center. Her 10-year-old sister, Madison, said

that for her, standing up was the hardestpart.“Trying to stand and not have the nose

of the board go into the sand is tough,”she said.Brett Lane, NBVC’s youth sports coor-

dinator, said ocean safety is the clinic’s toppriority.“The kids have to learn about different

currents, different waves and what theycan do and the dangers they pose,”he said.“We also teach them about ocean life andtaking care of the ocean.”Lane uses the buddy system; an adult

lifeguard accompanies each child into thewater.“We start on land,” he explained. “We

practice going from being prone on thesurfboard to standing – it’s called ‘up-downs.’”Once the children feel comfortable with

that, they head out to the waves.“We stress that it takes awhile,” Lane

said. “We don’t want them to be discour-aged, but they have to learn how to reada wave and know which one will be thebest ride. It takes practice, but I know thatonce that get that first ride, they’ll neverstop.”Starting a surf clinic was one of Lane’s

top priorities when he became the youthsports director late last year.“This beach has one of the best breaks

in the United States,” he said. “What bet-ter place to learn?”For more information or to register for

the upcoming clinic, call 982-5460.

Night. About 1,500 people took advantage of thelight crowds to enjoy the carnival rides and otheractivities.Friday alsomarked the ribbon-cutting for thenew

SeabeeMuseum. For details on that event, see Pag-es 7 and 8.The big day came Saturday and began with Pass

in Review, amilitary parade involving hundreds ofSeabees fromNavalMobileConstructionBattalions(NMCBs)3, 5and40, theNavalConstructionTrain-ing Center and the 31st Seabee Readiness Group, all of which are homeported at NBVC Port Huen-eme. NMCB 4 is currently deployed to Afghani-stan.Capt. Jim McHugh, commanding officer of

NBVC, welcomed the crowd and talked about theSeabees’ accomplishments both locally and world-wide.He was followed by Capt. John Korka, commo-

doreof the31st SeabeeReadinessGroup,whoyelled“Hoo-rah!” to the Seabees and got one in return.“You look sharp and sound ready,” he told

them.To the audience, he pointed out that themen and

women in uniformbehind himwere their neighborsand friends who deserved a big thank-you.“These Sailors have answered the 9-1-1 call every

time the world has gotten one, and there have beenplenty of calls,” he said. The audience responded with loud applause.Guest of honor for the parade was Rear Adm.

Christopher J. Mossey, commander of the NavalFacilities Engineering Command and Chief ofCivil Engineers.

It was Mossey who pinned the Purple Heart onUT1 TrentWestlake of Camarillo.Westlake was escorting Afghani local national

contractors throughanEntryControl Point holdingtent atForwardOperatingBaseWilson in theKan-dahar Province onDec. 2, 2010, when enemy insur-gents fired two 85mm rockets. One landed in thetent and exploded, injuring 11 people, includingWestlake.“Despite being stunned from the explosion, Petty

OfficerWestlake remained calmandprovided com-bat casualty care,”Mossey said.Westlake helpedpull out two injured civilians and

applied a tourniquet to a third person’s bleeding legbefore shipmates noticed Westlake himself was in-jured. He ended up being medically evacuated fortreatment for shrapnel injuries to his left arm andright leg.Westlake received a standing ovation.Opening ceremonies ended with a loud Seabee

Days tradition: a flyover by an E-2CHawkeye andsix armored vehicles from NMCB 3’s Convoy Se-curity Element circling the parade grounds, someof them firing blank rounds from themountedma-chine guns. After that, the crowd splintered off to dozens of

activities: touring amock Seabee camp, watching aboxing exhibition, gazing atmore than 100 lustrousautos on display at the car show, braving the carni-val rides, cheering on one of 10 teams in a softballtournament that would last 12 hours.Buses shuttledpeople to theSeabeeMuseum, and

about 2,300 people visited over the two days, Mu-seumDirector Lara Godbille said.Th

The boxing exhibition, which featurednine bouts involvingNavy and local fight-ers, drew about 750 people, according toDan Alpern, the marketing director ofMorale, Welfare and Recreation, whichorganized Seabee Days with Naval BaseVentura County and the 31st SeabeeReadiness Group (31st SRG).Overall, he said, Seabee Days ran

smoothly and was well-received.“We got a lot of positive feedback,” he

said. “People liked the variety and qual-ity of rides in the carnival. The bus serviceto and from the parking lot, which wassomething new this year, was a big hit.”Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Christo-

pher Klock of the 31st SRG spent Satur-day in the mockup Seabee camp, answer-ing a ton of questions.“Everyone wants to know about the

gear,” he said, pointing to about 40 items

laid out inside a tent that make up the60- to 70-pound pack a Seabee normallywears in a war zone. “A lot of kids havebeen asking questions, and so have a lotof retirees. They want to know how thiscompares to ‘back in the day.’”

Sunday’s events included a karaoke con-test and a motorcycle fun run and show. For results of all the Seabee Days com-

petitions— softball, boxing, karaoke, carshow and motorcycle show — see www.thelighthousenews.com.

Little kids climbing on big things was acommon occurrence at Seabee Days, wherefront loaders and dump trucks were just afew of the massive pieces of equipment ondisplay. Here, Chief Builder David Zahm ofNaval Mobile Construction Battalion 3 helpshis son, Paul, 2, back onto solid ground.
