TIPS FOR AN ADAPTED RESIDENCEARCHITECTS DOCUMENTATION

SUREHANDS®

• Care personnel can be both left-handed and right-handed. Provide a free space of at least 27.5 inch /70 cm on both sides of the toilet.

• Foresee a bathtub in which the water drain is locat-ed in the middle. That way the user can be seatedon either end. Do make sure that the water tapdoes not interfere with lowering the user into thebath, or lifting him out of it.

• Also make sure that a toilet is provided in the bath-room, and not just separate.

• Make sure that door openings are at least 35.4 inch/ 90 cm wide.

• Take into account that a free turning circle of59 inch / 150 cm is required.(for a wheelchair)

• If the bathtub is not used by anybody else, then itcan be installed at a higher level. The location of therim of the bathtub at a height of 35.4 inch / 90 cmis ideal (or somewhat lower, if a fold-down caretable is used).

• Let the bedroom and bathroom be located next toone another, preferably with a direct passage.

• If possible, position the bedroom and bathroom onthe ground floor.

TIPS FOR AN ADAPTED RESIDENCEARCHITECTS DOCUMENTATION

SUREHANDS®

"" Mobile lifts

"" Ceiling track installation

• No differences in levels or thresholds!

• A space of 5.1 inch / 13 cm is needed under the bed,the bath, the nursing table. Beware of obstacles underthe bath.

• Open shower.

• No wall-to-wall carpeting in the rooms where transfersare necessary.

• It is preferable to have ceilings with no differences inlevel and of a sufficient height. Best is 95 inch / 240 cmor higher.

• Ceilings should preferably be made of concrete or hol-low beams . In the case of a wooden grid ceiling, therails are installed before the ceiling is finished withGyproc panels or planking, unless it is possible to drillthrough to the attic.

• Take note of and make allowance for cupolas, lightingand utility connections that may lie in the path of theplanned rail.

• Door openings must extend to the ceiling, wheretransfers between the rooms are to be carried out.

• Lifting system with rail + sliding door = specialSureHands suspension kit!

• No curtain rod in the shower.

TIPS FOR AN ADAPTED RESIDENCEARCHITECTS DOCUMENTATION

SUREHANDS®

Important observation:

Equally as important is the layout of the bedroom and the bathroom, amongst others. A wrong positioningof, for instance, the bath or the toilet may make it impossible for the customer to select a certain type of lift-ing system. There is always a solution, even in seemingly impossible situations. There is, however, a very bigdifference between simply a solution and a solution that is efficient and user-friendly. It is therefore impor-tant that the plans for a newconstruction, or for an alter-ation, are discussed and eval-uated in advance, payingclose attention to the futureuse and/or the installation ofa certain type of lifting sys-tem. A SureHands specialist isalways available to help you!

Support bracket installation

Wall plate installation

Ceiling installation

Wall-to-wall installation

In the case of an installation against the ceiling, use will be made of a support bracket. The minimum requirement is300 kgf / 660 Lbsf for each support bracket attached to the ceiling. One support bracket is needed for every meter /3.2 ft of track.

Whenever an installation against the ceiling is not possible, then an installation will be carried out from wall to wall. This is only possible for straight rails. Curves, points and turntables are excluded. Depending on the span, either alow-profile reinforced rail (maximum span up to 4 m / 13.12 ft.) or a high profile reinforced rail (up to 7 m / 22.97ft.) will be required The rail is attached between the walls by means of a wallplate at each end.Minimum requirements for wallplates are 325 kgf / 716 Lbsf for a rail of up to 13.12 ft, and 350 kgf / 772 Lbsffor rails of up to 7 m / 22.97 ft.

1.4. Critical measurements for Ceiling track installations

p. 43

CEILING TRACKS INSTALLATIONARCHITECTS DOCUMENTATION

SUREHANDS®

Add an average of 1070 mm / 42 inch (Note that distances will vary according to patient and lifting device) from swivelhook toseating surface of a person. * We assume that the rail is always attached in such a way that it is located as closely as possible to the ceiling. In those caseswhere there is a gap between the ceiling and the rail, this distance must be added to the calculation.

HM2500 - Motor band length 2000 mm / 78.74 inch

We have created the attached two tables with measurements to make it easy for you to estimateprojects utilizing the new HM2500 motors and the 2540 Track to Track motors with different railconfigurations.

Warning: The space that a person takes up between the swivel hook and the seating surface can vary from person toperson; on average this interval lies between 1000 mm / 39.4 inch and 1300 mm / 51.2 inch.

A minimum distance of 400 mm / 15.7 inch between the wall and the rail running parallel to this wall is required forthe person using the rail system to pass through. The same distance is needed between the body and both sides of the door opening.

Required installation componentsWhen building or renovating the house, the architectcan plan for a straight rail connection between bed-room and bathroom. This rail can either by mounted to the ceiling or canrun from wall to wall. The toilet will be located further off the wall so as toallow the rail to run above the center of the toilet aswell as the bath at a minimum of 1/3 the length of thebath to be calculated from the head of the bath.

2.2.2. Straight rail connecting toilet and shower.

Required installation componentsA straight rail does not necessarily need to be installedparallel to the wall of the room. In the drawing above the best solution is obtained bymounting the rail diagonally across the room. The wall-to-wall rail can also be mounted with stan-dard wall plates as long as the rails angle in relation tothe wall does not exceed 45°.Please make sure that the motor cover does nottouch the walls.

2.2.3. 90° curves linking up with straight rails connecting bathroomand bedroom.

Required installation componentsIf the rail is directly mounted to the ceiling, an openingmust be provided above the door for the motor topass through.

Do not position the motor plug pins in a curve butalways on a straight stretch of rail. The plug pins maynot be positioned either where lifting takes place. Inthe drawing above the plug pins are positioned left ofthe bed just off the wall.

2.2.4. A 90° curve linking up with a straight rail connectingbathroom and bedroom.

Required installation componentsRail systems containing curves do not necessarily needto run at a right angle to the walls of the room.

In Exceptional cases the entire installation is mountedat an angle in relation to the wall for the person usingthe system to be able to reach specific spots.

2.2.5. 90° and 45° curves connecting the bedroom with thebathroom toilet.

Required installation componentsIf a ceiling installation extends all the way up to a wall, both ends of the rail can be suspended by means of alow-profile wall plate instead of a support bracket -that is assuming the wall can actually support thisinstallation method. In the drawing above the wallplates function as stabilizing elements. This method isespecially applied with extensive rail systems.

2.2.6. Using a power-operated points system to enable achange of direction: 3 exits

Required installation componentsKeep in mind that a switch can only be operated fromone side. In the drawing above this means that if theperson using the rail system wants to get from the toi-let to the shower, he or she must first move back tothe bedroom area in order to change the direction ofthe points to get to the shower area.

If the installation becomes too complex it may oftenbe more practical and economical to install two sepa-rate systems.

The standard switch installation provides electricity viathe contact skis of the HM2500 motors, and conse-quently it can only be used in combination with theHM2500 motor series.

Whenever the switch is used in combination with atrack-to-track portable motor, a separate power supplyis required for the electric switch.

2.2.8. A traverse rail system covers an entire room.

Required installation componentsThe entire surface of a single room can be coveredusing a traverse rail system. The traverse rail is manu-ally rolled across both rails running parallel with themotor moving laterally across the traverse rail. If aroom is split up by means of partitions which do notextend all the way up to the ceiling, a traverse rail sys-tem can still be installed as long as enough space is leftbetween the ceiling and the partitions to allow the tra-verse rail to pass through.

This system also offers an ideal solution in small roomsin which curves and points cannot be installed for lackof space. A motorized version for independent use isalso available.

Required installation componentsSome instances require one specific room to be entirelycovered as well as an additional connection to a sec-ond room. In the drawing above all facilities in thebathroom are easily accessible and at the same timethe entire room is available for transferring. The railleading into the bedroom connects the bed with allfacilities in the bathroom. In addition, the system pro-vides a second rail connection into the therapy room.

Keep in mind that the bedroom and therapy roominstallation must be lowered by means of threadedrods so as to be able to establish a connection with thetraverse rail.

Wooden beams might need to be bridged by means ofan I-section. Check to see if the wooden beams arestrong enough. The threaded rods through the section must be fastenedby means of a nut both above and underneath the sec-tion.One way to prevent the support brackets and connec-tion support brackets from being screwed into a plas-tered ceiling when tightening the bolts, proceed as fol-lows:- screw a nut level to the ceiling- use ceiling levelling plates (article number 3842 and3843) between the ceiling and the bracketsIn the case where rails cannot be mounted directly tothe ceiling, below is an alternative technique which maybe considered.

WARNING:The curves (article number 3810 and 3811) may not beshortened when they need to connect to other rails. This is because both ends consist of a 3.9 inch straightrail, which is the minimum length required for the curveto be correctly connected. The same applies to curves#3812 and #3813.

WARNING!Never mount the charging pins to the rail at a point where lifting can occur. This will cause damage to the charging pins.

WALL-TO-WALL LIFT INSTALLATIONARCHITECTS DOCUMENTATION

SUREHANDS®

ON THE WALL

It is better to carry out the horizontal installation of the lift based on a small sketch of the space in which the Wall-to-Wall Lift isbeing placed:• The positions of the planned starting and finishing points should be marked on the sketch, inother words: location of the swivel hook at the starting and finishing point. These points can bedefined during preparatory tests with a mobile lifter. • Draw a line connecting both points. • Draw a perpendicular line through the middle of this line. The spot where this line intersectsthe wall is the place where the Wall-to-Wall Lift should be installed. The set-up of the lift arm needs to equal the radius of the resulting circle and has to be definedbetween 95 cm / 37.5 inch and 130 cm / 51.2 inch. If the farthest point is rather high up and if the arm is not positioned horizontally but rather high, the radius will be considerablyreduced, as shown in the table below. If that is the case, it might be preferable not to follow the above mentioned method implic-itly, but to move the Wall-to-Wall Lift a few more centimeters in the direction of the highest position.

Position Distance from wall to swivel hookLowest Horizontal Highest

1 92.8 cm / 36.5 inch 95,0 cm / 37.4 inch 85.1 cm / 33.5 inch2 94.0 / 37 100 / 39.4 89.5 / 35.23 98.7 / 38.9 105 / 41.3 93.9 / 374 130.3 / 40.7 110 / 43.3 98.3 / 38.75 108.0 / 42.5 115 / 45.3 102.7 / 40.46 112.6 / 44.3 120 / 47.2 107.1 / 42.27 117.3 / 46.2 125 / 49.2 111.5 / 43.98 121.9 / 48 130 / 51.2 115.9 / 45.6

According to the stretch of the arm, positions 1 (shortest) through 8 (longest), this table gives you the horizontal distance fromthe wall to the swivel hook for three positions of the arm: in the lowest position, the horizontal position and the highest position. One can determine the installation height of the wall plate as follows: determine the height of the top fastening bolts. The determining point is the lowest position one has to reach for the transfer. Is this from the ground up, from thebath or wheelchair. This point needs to be reached in the lowest arm position, otherwise the person just floats above it.

To the height of the lowest point one has to add successively:• 120 cm / 47.2 inch from the seat of the person to the swivel hook• 8.5 cm / 3.3 inch from the swivel hook to the middle of the arm• 30 cm / 11.8 inch for the lowest arm position vis-à-vis the horizontal position• -1 cm / -0.4 inch from the horizontal position to the screws. One also has to take into account that in this way the person only just touches thebath. If you want to reach a sitting position and if you want to be able to fasten orloosen the sling straps, you have to deduct a further 20cm / 7.9 inch.

Example of a transfer wheelchair-hospital bed. The seat of the wheelchair is 50 cm / 19.7 inch high, the bed is 80 cm / 31.5 inchhigh. That means the wheelchair is the determining point. The result is: 50 cm (wheelchair) + 120 + 30 - 1 - 20 = 187.5 cm19.7 inch (wheelchair) + 47.3 + 3.3 + 11.8 - 0.4 - 7.9 = 73.8 inchThe final positioning should be at 74 inch height to the top bolt holes. You can follow this rule: height of the lowest point + 135cm / 53.2 inch. The average height of most transfer positions is:Bottom of the bath: 10 cm / 3.9 inch, Bed: 45 cm / 17.7 inch, Wheelchair: 50 cm / 19.7 inch, Higher bath or hospital bed: 80 cm/ 31.5 inchThe lifting height that can be reached in this way varies from 17.3 inch (retracted arm) to 24.8 inch (stretched arm) respectively.

WHEELCHAIR-TO-WATER™ POOLLIFT INSTALLATION

ARCHITECTS DOCUMENTATION

SUREHANDS®

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE INSTALLATION OF THE A-SOCKET.

This socket (A) consists of a stainless steel sleeve that is built into the floor. A hole must be provided for this purpose, which has a diame-ter of 11 cm / 4.33 inch and a depth of 16.5 cm / 6.49 inch. Your SUREHANDS® representative should be consulted with regard to theposition and installation of the socket hole. The distance between the edge of the pool and the centre of the socket should be at least 70cm / 27.6 inch, in case of an overflowing water level. When the water level is lower than the level of the socket, then the positioningmust be reviewed individually in each case. The distance between the edge of the pool and the centre of the socket may in all instancesnever be smaller than 15 cm / 5.9 inch - in case of an even floor - since one wheel of the lifter will otherwise hang over the edge of thepool when it is positioned. A difference in floor level of more than 9 mm / 0.35 inch may not occur within a circumference of ±30 cm /11.8 inch of the socket, as otherwise the wheels will get stuck when turning the lifter. With regard to the water-retaining layer there are 5 options (situation in Belgium - always to be discussed with the architect):

• Watertight concrete is used instead of a water-retaining layer. • The socket is drilled into the edge of pool basin (massive concrete) instead of the poolside deck. This area is located between

the edge of the pool and the overflow channel.• The architect agrees that a hole is drilled and assumes that the opening around the socket is given a watertight finish with

epoxy resin.• A recess is foreseen in the floor, where the socket can later be inserted.• The socket is positioned in front of the water-retaining layer, that is to say, the water-retaining layer comes up to the socket. In

this regard is important to know the exact for ground level. In this regard it can be advisable to weld an A-type socket throughthe plate of a C-type socket.

1. Determine the location where the socket is to be installed.

2. Drill a hole of the correct diameter and up to the correct depth
