It’s the time of year when the resolutions have fallen off the wagon and we’re in the depths of winter. However don’t despair as we have the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards, in association with Laura’s Hair World and Sleek to bring some sparkle to this month. Hugh Baird student is powerlifting World Champion!Sixteen year old Hugh Baird College student, Alex Hughes is feeling on top of the world after becoming a powerlifting World Champion.Alex competed in the World Powerlifting Championships in the USA back in October 2012 and originally won a Silver medal. However, after initial winner Kenneth B%/2+(*#'(!"'C6#0"7+!(<%,(failing a drugs test, Alex now scoops the coveted Gold medal.Alex, who has been powerlifting since he was thirteen years old, travelled to the competition in Boston with his Dad, where he competed in the 1617 year old category. Over 12 countries entered the Championship, which took place over two days from the 27th – 28th October 2012.Alex discovered he’d scooped the Gold medal after seeing an update online. How are you feeling right now?It still doesn't feel real but I know I have been given this amazing opportunity and as much as it has changed my life, it could all go wrong. I have been given this talent and I must use it to help others.

Now you have moved to London how has your life changed?Well I need to be closer to the record company. It's a whole new routine. I am getting used to the hustle and bustle but I have made a lot of new friends. Music is of course really important to me and I want to be in control of my destiny, I have been writing my own material and I am putting my foot down to ensure that my stuff is used.
Are you looking for a girlfriend?Well it's harder now than it used to be because I have to make sure that a girl is interested in me for the right reasons and has the right intentions. Right now I am locked down in my career and that is my priority.

The New York born musician, who opened the show for Gary Barlow at his Liverpool Philharmonic Hall met home owners, volunteers and staff at Liverpool Habitat for Humanity (LHFH).
The charity is providing an alternative route onto the property ladder for families who could not ordinarily afford a home of their own. Future home owners spend 500 hours physically working on the building site – known as ‘sweat equity’ – in return for a £10,000 reduction in the cost of their home.
The charity will feature one of Nell’s songs, called Sirens, on a new promotional DVD which will showcase the work of the charity and their aim of breaking the cycle of poverty.
Nell said: “This is a wonderful organisation that builds homes for people that need houses desperately. It’s a wonderful, communal exercise and I’m very proud of the work they are doing here.
“I knew about Habitat for Humanity from America. They’ve done great work over there in New Orleans and all over the country, but then Shannon Ledbetter, who ,6&'(.2+(8"9+,:%%0(#<70"#.+-(*,%.+($+(#(0+..+,(because she had heard my song Sirens. I think it struck a chord with her so she wrote to me and asked me if I would come and visit. I’ve just been incredibly moved to be on the building site here and see what is happening and the incredible work people are doing.”

The charity DVD, due for release in early 2013, will include information about the families they are helping, the community they are building and the importance of support from volunteers and donations.
Liza Parry, the charity’s executive director, said: “It has been a real boost having Nell visit all of the staff
and volunteers here at Habitat. All support is invaluable to us. To keep
build costs as low as possible we rely on donations of time, money, materials and
gifts in kind.

“The more we spread the word means the more we generate awareness of our cause. HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOU HAD A TALENT FOR WRITING COMEDY?I guess just by having a go at it. Whenever people ask me ‘how do you become a writer’? I always say ‘start with a pen and paper’. I’ve had no training in acting or writing.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COMEDY PIECE YOU HAVE WRITTEN?Probably Phoenix Nights, I loved writing the comedy in Going Off Big Time but there is a lot more in Phoenix Nights. It was a lot of fun to write as well.
DO YOU PREFER WRITING OR ACTING?Acting every time, it is my dream job.
WHAT PROJECTS HAVE YOU GOT LINED UP FOR 2013?I really want to work on my long term unemployment!! Besides that I’m hopefully shooting a 3rd series of Mount Pleasant and I’m trying to get a comedy series off the ground. Possibly Peepshow series 9 as well but I’m not sure I’ll be a part of it. I think I’ll be doing a lot more writing actually.

Prescot born Emily Karatay has had a world of opportunity opened up to her after appearing on Hotel GB and being picked as winner by Mary Portas.
Emily previously worked as an entertainment rep but since giving birth to her son, Noah, she hasn’t been #40+( .%( 7&!( '6".#40+(+$:0%1$+&.-(#<.+,(%9+,(#( 1+#,(of relentless job searching Emily saw an advert on Gumtree to audition for a new TV show, Hotel Gb, and she decided to apply: “I had nothing to lose, I’d been searching for a job for so long I just thought I’ll go for it, I didn’t expect anything to come from it!”
For one week the Bermondsey Square Hotel in London was transformed into Hotel GB and staffed by a mix of celebrities and people seeking employment. Among the celebrity staff were Gordon Ramsey, Mary Portas, Hillary Devay, Gok Wan, Katie Piper Dr Christian Jensen and Kirsty Allsopp.
Throughout the week the staff were faced with #( '+,"+'( %<( 2%':".#0".1( /2#00+&3+'( <,%$( !"<7/60.(customers to unusual requests, all along they were being carefully watched by their potential employers. For the majority of her time at the hotel Emily was working for the Queen of the Shops herself, Mary Portas. “I went from never meeting anybody famous to meeting someone every 79+($"&6.+'-(F"00#,1(P+9#1(*#'($1(favourite! It was fantastic; it was a very surreal, brilliant experience.” When asked to give us some insight on what working with Mary was like Emily credited her strong work ethic: “Mary just has this persona about her which I think is why she’s got so far. If she puts her mind to something, she gets it done.”
Emily puts her success on the show down to her hunger for a job and her level of ambition: “I’d been waiting for an opportunity for so long, so I took it with both hands and I think Mary could see how much I wanted it.”
Over the next year Emily is being trained by Mary in buying and selling and hopes to get a position somewhere in Liverpool. “I want a career in Liverpool, I don’t see any reason to leave this city, I love it here. Especially for someone who’s into fashion its brilliant, you can walk around town and be so inspired by people. Plus with my son I want to stay close to my family.” Emily hopes the recognition from the show will help her to launch her dream career.

He performed at The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic last month. Tickets for the event had sold out within minutes of them going on sale and Gary, whose show was screened on ITV1 the previous night, did not disappoint his fans.He started his performance on time to avoid his fans waiting around and carried out a two hour set with ease along with his nine piece band. His hits included Greatest Day, Million Love Songs and Pray and of course ending with Never Forget, it was a truly unforgettable show. As always with the front man of Take That, he left his fans eager for more.Truly grateful for them venturing out in the depths of winter he said to his audience, “I know it’s expensive and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.” A gentleman and a show man, the people of Merseyside loved his show.

Bierkeller in Liverpool is situated on the site of the old Zeligs opposite the Hilton. If you haven't heard about this new number one party destination for the city then where have you been hiding? The atmosphere is rustic, and inviting with its huge bar stools dotted around lots of tables. Though there is also plenty of space to stand. The bar is enormous, running down the entire length of one wall and the staff are forever cleaning work surfaces and looking out for the customers which is reassuring to see. In addition they all seem to be exceptionally good looking, perhaps as this is a beer fuelled bar is this intentional to drive the lads in? I can only imagine it would work.

Within each continent (Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and South America and a strangely titled Oceana) are the small dishes, burgers, pizzas and salads, which range in taste and spice depending on the country you are visiting.
I was tempted by the Wild Boar burger but, being pregnant, I played safe and had the jacket potato skins loaded with bacon and cheese (£4.95) and the Jack Daniels BBQ Chicken Wings (£4.95) an absolutel guilty pleasure of deliciously tasty fried chicken. There was also a half rack of ribs on the North America Platter (£11.95) which I didn't have room for but our waitress kindly wrapped it up for our dog.
Simon was more adventurous with the Asian Platter (£12.95) which consisted of Thai tempura prawns seasoned with a sweet chill dip (£4.95), peking Duck spring rolls (£4.95) and absolutely gorgeous chicken satay skewers with a peanut dip (£4.95)
As it was a bitterly cold day a comforting desert was required. I had predictably, sticky toffee pudding and
custard while Simon had the chocolate fudge cake with ice cream.Both priced at £3.45 Beirkeller
is an inexpensive eateries that does not compromise on its quality and taste. A
perfect accompaniment to a night out, I would say and I was also impressed with the kids menu. Not a chicken nugget in sight, thankfully and everything freshly prepared and cooked. I expect the place is heaving on weekend.
I noticed Happy Hour is between 4 and 7pm Sundays to Thursdays which
again is a welcome sign.
Having spent a pleasurable couple of hours at Bierkeller, it started to remind me

me greatly. Please try it, it's a great venue, the staff are lovely and the food is uncomplicated, delicious and served piping hot.... just the way I like it.

The Capstone Theatre is delighted to announce a new International Jazz Festival to launch from 28th February 3rd March 2013, in Liverpool the UK’s music capital.

In the short time since its opening in 2010, The Capstone Theatre has established itself as the city's leading venue for cutting edge jazz and world music. Tell us about the RangeWe are a group consisting of 3 members that can sing and rap. We are mainly a commercial group hoping to break into mainstream radio play. We have been making music for about 2 or 3 years now We used to be called Urban Movements but we started afresh and changed the name. The members are James Dunbavin aka Melo.D age 22, Alan Williams aka Shy age 22 and Ben Mohammed age 19.
What is the type of music you write/playRap / pop / dance / rnb / house. We do the lot, that's where the range comes into it.
How did you form the group?We formed the group years ago meeting other artists online and collating then met up for shows then started making music together.
What are your plans for the yearThis year we are going to bring an ep out called love inspirations and its about everything u wud cum accross wen in love or splitting up etc also hoping to get a few shows done and radio appearances.
Who would you like to be signed with?Dappy as he is a huge inspiration to us

What is your favourite track on your album and why?We don't have one, they're all our favourite we'll let u pick yours.
How long has it taken to put together?The cd has taken a few months

I dread to have my heating bill, my heaters have been on constantly it is just so cold! Disappointed the John Lewis snowman has disappointed from twitter, bless him he must have melted!! Although I have seen quite a few other types…how many have you seen? Snowmen I am talking about! I have seen quite a few, even a snow woman and a snow baby all they needed was a house oh that’s an igloo in the world of snow isn’t it?!! I love the snow but only for one day after that it gets a bit boring when you still have to go to work!! The programme they also host ’I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’, beat XFactor in the awards too, I bet Simon Cowell wasn’t to happy! However his dancing dog winner Pudsey did a fantastic dance routine to Gangnam style! Kimberley Walsh looked sensational yet received criticism from fellow twitters saying that she should stick to dancing! Oooh that’s mean!
And my fave soap at the mo did well, Coronation street picked up award for best serial drama, been loving the whole Kirsty and Tyrone story line!

I was thrilled to attend the Leicester Mercury Sports Awards on the 17th January at Leicester’s Welford Road Stadium, presenting an award and getting the chance to meet so many of the amazing sportspeople that continue to contribute to the amazing sporting success that our country has enjoyed over the past twelve months.
Despite the snow and freezing temperatures of January, I have continued to work on my latest construction project and battling successfully with the elements, thanks to my Heat Holders socks. The freezing temperatures that welcomed the New Year were no match for the unique thermal technology of the socks and I also put their range of thermal underwear to good use, truly keeping out the cold with its TOG rated design.
Bad weather does not necessarily mean that we can take a break from all of the important jobs that we have to do and I am happy to report that my Blåkläder work wear continues to work hard and combat the tough conditions of a construction site. With specially engineered seams and zips, the clothing is incredibly hard wearing, meaning that I am kept as safe and warm as possible, no matter what the elements throw at me.
I hope that you are all keeping safe and warm, although we are now into February, there is still the chance of some extreme weather and I am making sure that I have my Heat Holders and my Blåkläder clothing to hand, no matter how big or small the job I am working on is!

STAGE ONE Cut off lengths of decking are ideal for this type of task as they are often made from treated timber, so will last longer. If you already have decking in your garden, it is nice to have a matching window box, but if not, the grooves on the decking planks provide a decorative 7&"'2(<%,(#&1(3#,!+&=(Q2+(0+&3.2(%<(1%6,()%*+,(4%[(*"00(!+:+&!(%&(.2+('"@+(%<(1%6,(*"&!%*-(46.(the width and depth is normally around 12 inches, so just 2 lengths of decking will be ample. STAGE TWO Once you have determined the length, width and depth of your window box, you can begin to cut your timber to size. First, cut your 2” x 2” and 6” x 2” timber to form the front, back and sides of your window box. Next, 7[(!%*&(.2+(,+9+,'+('"!+(%<(1%6,(."$4+,(o.2+("&'"!+(%<(.2+(4%[p(41(!,"00"&3(pilot holes and driving in the 75mm screws with your drill / driver.

New chapter for Mansion HouseLIVERPOOL’S historic Mansion House in Calderstones Park is about to begin a new stage in its story after the council agreed a deal with social business The Reader Organisation to take over the building. Liverpool disability arts group vows to help performers and audiences overcome internet challenges
A disability arts organisation has become the latest group to join a national campaign to help disabled people overcome the challenges of using the internet.
Liverpool based DaDaFest, which organises a biennial festival promoting disability and deaf arts and an ongoing programme promoting disabled artistic talent, has become a partner of Go ON Gold, a project designed to help disabled people participate fully in an increasingly digital society.
Go ON Gold now hopes other arts organisations will follow their lead by joining the campaign to capitalise on the new awareness and understanding of equality issues generated by the success of the Paralympics.
Teaming up with Go ON Gold means DaDaFest, one of whose projects aims to increase attendance at artistic events among disabled and deaf people, will actively help performers and audiences to access the internet and help them use on line tools to improve their web experience.
