In 2015, ACOMS entered into a partnership 

with Dr. Myron Tucker’s “FACES” ski mee ng, 

thereby crea ng the premier OMS‐focused ski 

mee ng in the country.  Now in its 31st  year, 

ACOMS/FACES provides world class con nuing 

medical and dental educa on in a relaxed, fun 

environment in which par cipants can engage 

in an ac vity of interest, exchange ideas, and 

interact with friends and family. I believe this 

to be an excellent model that can be replicated 

as a unique benefit of ACOMS membership.  

In 2018, ACOMS will be ini a ng a new 

“LIFESTYLE SERIES” that will provide 

educa onal opportuni es for small numbers of 

individuals who share a passion for both OMS 

and recrea on. While the number of shared 

enthusiasms are essen ally limitless, we have 

decided to begin by organizing courses 

centered upon golf, cycling, fishing and wine 

tas ng. While the courses are s ll in 

development, we envision small groups of 

surgeons who meet in exo c locales for two to 

four days to share their love of surgery and the 

outdoors, highlighted by world class educators 

providing updates on various topics of interest 

to OMS’s.

In Memoriam - J. Thomas Lanka, DDS

John Thomas “Tom” Lanka, DDS, died peacefully Sunday, 

January 28 at home in Galway, New York, surrounded by 

his loving family. Dr. Lanka served as ACOMS President 

from 2009‐2010.  

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Lanka was the son of the late 

Florence and John Lanka and brother of the late James 

Lanka. He graduated from the University of Illinois College 

of Den stry in 1961. Dr. Lanka prac ced Oral OMS in 

Schenectady from 1966‐1998. He was an a ending Oral Surgeon at Ellis and the former St. 

Clare's Hospitals. He served as Chief of the Medical‐Dental Staff of St. Clare's from 1988‐1993. 

He served as the Director of the Department of Den stry and Oral Surgery for many years as 

well as being an instructor in the General Prac ce Residency Program. He was inspired as he 

worked with the young Dental Residents un l his last hospitaliza on in August 2017.  

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lenore Lanka; two daughters, Kathleen Lanka of Galway 

and her two children, Sarah and Annelise Ostrowski; Karen Hedman and her husband, Chris of 

Boulder Colorado; two sons, John Lanka of Denver and his two children, Dylan and Isabelle; 

Dan Lanka of the Galway area, his wife Katrina and son Cody. Dr. Lanka felt blessed to have 

been surrounded by wonderful people all his life. His mo o was "Do a li le good each day" 

and "Be kind to everyone you meet."  

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, February 3rd, 2018 at St. Mary's Church in 

Ballston Spa at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribu ons may be made to the Galway 

Public Library New Building Fund, PO Box 207, 5264 Sacandaga Road, Galway, NY 12074.

mee ng registrant may submit and present an abstract 

and all presented oral abstracts will be published in 

OOOO. Accepted submissions by OMS residents will 

automa cally be enrolled in our Resident Abstract 

Compe on and will be eligible to win cash prizes.  The 

submission deadline has been extended to Sunday, 

February 11 at 11:59 PM EST.

R. Gilbert Triple , DDS, Ph.D. to Receive 

the ACOMS W. Harry Archer Award  

 

The W. Harry Archer Award was established to recognize the achievements of individual OMS 

and to memorialize Dr. Archer’s significant contribu ons to the specialty. Dr. Archer, a prolific 

writer and gi ed and respected teacher, was a trailblazer of OMS. His excellence in leadership, 

teaching, research, and wri ng place him among the eternal giants of our specialty.   

Dr. Triple  trained and served as an OMS in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps, re ring with the rank 

of Captain a er 21 years of service. He directed the research and training programs with an 

emphasis on combat casualty care, and served as Chairman of the Dental Department at one 

of the Navy's flagship hospitals, where he ran the residency training program. 

Dr. Triple  is the assistant editor of the only textbook ever wri en on the topic of war injuries 

to the head and neck region. He was recruited by the UTHSCSA to join their faculty in 1984. In 

1991, he was named Chairman of the Texas A&M University College of Den stry Department 

of OMS. Dr. Triple 's areas of research interest are in the areas of bone physiology, hyperbaric 

oxygen therapy, head and neck infec on, maxillofacial trauma, dental implants, guided  ssue 

regenera on, and microneurosurgery.  

Dr. Triple  speaks worldwide on guided  ssue regenera on techniques, implantology, and 

treatment of war me combat casual es. He was instrumental in the crea on of the Dr. P. 

Earle Williams Memorial Lectureship, an annual con nuing educa on pla orm created in the 

memory of the first board‐cer fied OMS in Dallas.  

Dr. Triple  is Vice Chairman of the Department, Director of Hospital Affairs, and Chairman of 

the Den stry Department at Baylor University Medical Center. He is the primary liaison 

between the College and the hospital. In 1998, he was awarded one of the highest honors in 

the Texas A&M University System when the Board of Regents named him a Regents Professor. 

ACOMS is thrilled to bestow this honor on such a deserving individual.  The award ceremony 

will take place on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the ACOMS 39th Annual Scien fic Conference 

and JKOMSF Pearls VII mee ng in New Orleans, LA.

ACOMS Joins Global Alliance for Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma & Anaesthesia Care (G4)

The G4 Alliance is commi ed to advoca ng for the 

neglected surgical pa ent and is driven by a mission to 

provide a collec ve voice for increased access to safe, 

essen al, and  mely surgical, obstetric, trauma, and 

anaesthesia care as part of universal health coverage.  The 

vision of the G4 Alliance is universal access to quality surgical, obstetric, trauma, and 

anaesthesia care 

The G4 Alliance seeks to effect change through advocacy, policy implementa on, and 

resource mobiliza on.  Member organiza ons represent a cross‐disciplinary collabora ve of 

expert organiza ons and socie es dedicated to providing technical exper se, collabora ng 

with stakeholders, and ensuring that surgery, obstetrics, trauma, and anaesthesia represent a 

poli cal and public health priority. As part of these advocacy efforts, the G4 Alliance is 

dedicated to breaking down barriers to accessible surgical care around the globe. They focus 

on strengthening workforce capacity, infrastructure, financing mechanisms, supply chains, 

and other cri cal components of universal health coverage. 

More than 80 organiza ons working in over 160 countries are members of the G4 Alliance 

and in August 2017, ACOMS joined the ranks as a member organiza on. ACOMS has a seat on 

the Permanent Council and is represented by Dr. Melissa 

Amundson.  

Dr. Amundson received her dental degree at University of Illinois. 

She completed her OMS residency at the University of Miami/

Jackson Memorial Hospital in 2012. She followed this with three 

years of private prac ce and voluntary faculty at Hospital Escuela in 

Tegucigalpa, Honduras. She then decided to return to academics in 

2015 and completed an Advanced Trauma/CMF fellowship at Legacy 

Emanuel Hospital in trauma and post trauma c reconstruc on. She 

has interests in maxillofacial trauma, dentoalveolar surgery, dental 

implants and orthognathic surgery and her background and skills 

make her the ideal person to represent ACOMS at the G4 Alliance.
