Life. Paper. Scrapbook. 5

Hello everyone, welcome to issue 3 of Life.Paper.Scrapbook. The last 4 months have been a bit of a learning curve for me. As much as I would like to pretend we are a big fancy publication, LPS is infact just me and a computer so I have had to accept that I couldn’t do everything by myself. I have been lucky enough to have the lovely Ruth Bonser come on as my right hand gal and she has been a complete blessing. We also put this issue back two weeks, that is because I had to learn the hard way to back up my files. During all these struggles our Design Team has been incredible supporting me and helping out where they can, I honestly do not know what I would do without them!

Since the last issue we have lost a few DT member but we have gain some too (and a Project Life Team!) so this issue is absolutley packed with DT inspiration as well as inspiration from all our wonderful readers.

The other exciting thing that has happened since the last issue is that we have released our LPS Day To Day Project Kit (pictured below), an exclusive kit for your pocket memory keeping and other projects. It has been a great success and we plan on doing some other one off kits including a scrapbook one coming soon and some christmas mini kits which will be anounced on the blog and our Facebook Page. We do still have some kits available and you can find them here: www.lifepaperscrapbook.bigcartel.com We offer shipping to the US, NZ, Singapore but if you are in another area just email us and we will get a quote for you.

Thank you to all of you for making the kit and LPS such a sucess, I hope you enjoy this issue. Grab a cuppa, sit down and get ready to be inspired.

The Chalkboard trend is impossible to miss right now, but like many of our trends it extends beyond scrapbook. At LPS, we think it is a terrific neutral trend that will go with your other supplies to make them fun and fresh.

B Patterned Paper In their new mid-season release, Printshop,

Studio Calico mixed chalkboard elements with really bright colours. Most of the other chalkboard lines have been teaming it with softer tones. This

paper covered in chalkboard doodled frames is a versatile page for fussy-cutting or border

strips. The black and white makes a good base for any other colours, even some of those neon products we have seen a lot of recently. Studio

Calico Framed from the Printshop Collection www.studiocalico.com/shop/printshop/paper-framed

Washi Tape This mix of words and patterns from My Mind’s Eye is a great way to add chalkboard to your projects in just a small way, not too much all at once. Either mixed with your title or just for embellishment, this set of tapes include a geometric, organic, typographical and classic stripes with a little colour. My Minds Eye Decorative Tape www.mymindseye.com/Chalkstudio.asp

Journal Cards For the Project Life enthusiasts this set of project life style cards

from WRMK are a filled with a variety of chalkboard themed product. The black is teamed with mint, coral and golden yellow,

making a great palette no matter what season it is around the world right now. The set includes a mix of larger and smaller cards

plus die cut cards too.Chalkboard Album’s Made Easy Card Set www.weronthenet.com/Chalkboard

Flair We love that the chalkboard trend doesnt always have to be about typography, these chalkboard hearts on flair by Greatest View are a little extra touch to add to any project.Chalkboard Album’s Made Easy Card Set www.etsy.com/au/shop/greatestview

Jen Ritchie Hong Kong www.jenritchie.com

Our Featured Designer this issue is the very talented Jen Ritchie, a Canadia Designer living in Hong Kong where she also co-owns Mei Li Paperie, an online store dedicated to bringing Asia Pacific the latest trends and inspiration in scrapbooking.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your life:I am a Canadian living in Hong Kong. I moved to Asia 10 years ago when my parents were relocated to China for work. I never imagined I would be here this long but I fell in love with the adventure and a handsome man with a rugged Aussie accent. We have since married, started our own businesses and adopted our mongrel pup. I started scrapbooking 5 years ago when I moved to Hong Kong. Life is never boring here and I wanted to find a way to record our adventures but hated the idea of just writing journals. Photography has always been a hobby of mine, so after attending my first scrapbooking class I knew I had found yet another love in my life. This year, scrapbooking really became my newest adventure when I became co-owner of an online scrapbooking supplies shop www.meilipaperie.com created to help those of us scrapping in parts of the world where supplies are not easy to get. You can also see more of my adventures on my blog www.jenritchie.com

When you sit down to scrapbook, which comes first, the photo or the paper? When I scrapbook I often begin with a challenge or sketch I want to do. I also create a list of rules or guidelines that I want to follow for my layout.. the best way to describe it would be like a mood board in my head. My mood board often has a limited colour palette of 3 colours at max as all as textures, techniques or design elements I would like the layout to have. Sometimes I even print various inspirations, which could be furniture, a magazine ad, a photo of a stylish room… anything that inspires the direction I want my layout to go. From there it goes either way… sometimes I know what photos I want to use, but other times I have supplies or a collection that I would like to create with. Once the photo and paper have been chosen I pull embellishments that follow my "mental mood board" and have them all out on the table ready to grab with and inspiration I have printed out. Layouts often curate in my mind for days before I begin working on them, and I am usually working on quit a few in my head at a time.. ha ha

Page 10: Life.Paper.Scrapbook. Issue 3

10 Life. Paper. Scrapbook.

What elements do you find yourself reaching for over and over again?I find I am most inspired when I am working with large printed photos. Lately, I can't get enough enamel dots (peach, pink and turquoise), sequins and anything metallic or sparkly. I have also been playing with watercolours a lot.

How do you store your collections; all together ie papers/accessories or split them apart according to colour, pattern etc?Store? You mean a scrapbooking room is supposed to be organised? ha ha I love kits and so I tend to keep them together as kits until the kit is dead. When I do have a large portion of a collection, I try to keep the collections together, however bits and pieces often get mixed into kits that I think they may work with.

How do you feel about your first layouts? Do you like them or do you feel like re-doing them? Has your scrapping style changed since you first started?Oh man my first layouts are really honestly cringe worthy! They are deffinatly on my to-do list to redo, however I plan on still trying to keep in the colour scheme or feeling I was originally going for. So a redo but attempting to keep it similar. My scrapping style has changed a lot! I have a better understanding of design, colour and techniques. I used to really stress about having coherent groupings all over the page and making sure they had enough "stuff" on them, but now I am really exploring minimalism and simple effectiveness. Do you ever throw away or give up on a layout because it's just not working?Yes! I have a rule that I scrap by… if I am feeling its not working I make my self sleep on it. When I am feeling frustrated or just pushing stuff around too much I put the layout in an area of my house that I will see it often and leave it. I have a look at it as I pass by or have a cup of tea and often looking at it with fresh eyes sparks ideas of where I can take it. If a layout sits around too long it gets put in the box

Page 11: Life.Paper.Scrapbook. Issue 3

Life. Paper. Scrapbook. 11

of unfinished layouts. Every few months I go through that box and either pull photos off and toss or start new.

Right now, what is your favourite colour combination?Just one?? I love grey… anything plus grey has been a fav of mine for years. A current obsession is peach and gold or turquoise and gold. I also really love working in monochromatic.

What do you do when your mojo leaves for vacation? This happens way more than it should…seriously if my mojo was an employee it would totally be fired! ha ha.. One of my go to cures is scrap lifting. I just find a layout I super love and straight out scrap lift it, it seems to always do the trick!

What is your "scrapbooking dream"?I have a few different scrapbooking dreams. One is to help build the scrapbooking community stronger globally , creating better connections and making supplies easier to come by. I dream that meilipaperie.com will grow and become a go-to online community and shop for global scrappers. On a personal level, I am a teacher and I dream that one day I won't be teaching English full time but scrapbooking instead. Being on a design team for a kit club or manufacturer would be a dream come true as well…

DayBOOKS

Page 117: Life.Paper.Scrapbook. Issue 3

Life. Paper. Scrapbook. 117

Julia tells us about creating her daybook: I wanted a creative and different way to remember the year, 2012 being our first “full” year living in Victoria, and also be able to use tickets and souvenirs that I had collected along the way. I used mostly Amy Tangerine products taking inspiration from her vibrant colours and loved that her Daybook included pocket pages so I could include info booklets and loose items. I also found stickers and embellishments that related specifically to events that happened during the year which I used throughout and for the front cover.

Hybrid Project LifeBy Aimee Dow

Welcome to the wonderful world of Hybrid Project Life! Just looking? That’s okay, here at L.P.S. we are all about filling in the blanks. The best way to describe a hybrid project life spread – a spread that consists of both digital elements and physical product. If you are adding text to your photos either in Photoshop or with an app, you are technically a hybrid project lifer.

Hybrid spreads are not particularly new. It has a lifespan equal to that of Project Life itself, it is however becoming more prevalent as more and more scrapbooking companies (like Studio Calico, Basic Grey and Glitz) release digital products. Without doubt, there are some great advantages to hybrid spreads. The first being that you can have the digital collections only seconds after they are released and for the most part, digital papers, stamps and brushes are easily altered. With a click of a mouse or with a stroke of an eraser tool, you can change the colour and shape of an object or paper. Text can be added, products can be layered, its a great way to get a more customised Project Life album

with all the benefits you would get from any form of paper play. The other side of the coin of course, is that adding an extra action to your creative process can be time consuming. I really enjoy my creative time in front of the computer, but I am not naïve enough to think that everybody has 4 hours a week to edit photos and custom-make their own cards. Luckily, there are some clever cookies out there that are making the

process easier every day.

Jessica Sprague (http://www.jessicasprague.com/) offers fantastic tutorials on how to incorporate digital elements into your projects, along with some awesome digi-packs from top brands such as Basic Grey, Carte Bella, Glitz, Fancy Pants and Echo Park. My personal favourite is The Lilypad (http://the-lilypad.com), where you will find fantastic independent

designers such as Paislee Press, Valorie Wibbens and One Little Bird. Notably, all three of these designers (and many more on the pad) have just released digital packs that can be downloaded onto your smart phone! No computer needed.

Please don’t take my word for it or judge the hybrid style purely on the examples shown here. This is simply my interpretation. There are some super talented ladies out there such as Caytlyn of Love Design + Sunshine (http://www.lovedesignsunshine.com/p/project-life.html) and the truly lovely, lilypad alumni, studio calico heavyweight - Shanna Noel (http://shannanoel.blogspot.com.au/) Spread Credits: Paislee Press and Studio Calico (Woodgrain spread),

This can be relevant in the “big bad” that could happen, but it is equally relevant for the small details that are not so perfect in your regular everyday life. The messy rooms and the messy lives that we sometimes lead. You dont need to have it all hanging out all the time, but you can still record these ‘less than perfect’ and not-so-shiny moments.I asked myself three questions about this difficult time.

1) What would I want to remember in the future about this? Everything, nothing or something in between?

2) How would it help me cope to write and photograph these things right now, how would it help me later?

3) What would I feel comfortable sharing about this time with everyone else who might see this album? That might include small children, family, blog readers or close friends. If I include things that are upsetting, how would they affect these people?

This year I started project life along with many of you. I had tried it before unsuccessfully, but this time I found my rhythm with this project and have been enjoying the weekly pocket page protector layouts, along with much of the scrapbooking industry.

Then life happened. It wasnt happy and it wasn’t smiling and it wasn’t photogenic. Weeks when I would not normally be interested in scrapbooking the memories came along and I was left wondering how I would put this week into my Project Life album. Did I even want to?

Project Life, not Project

Perfect Life.

This year someone I care about was in a bad accident. He went to the trauma unit at the hospital and was in a coma for weeks. He did not look photogenic at this point in time, you can imagine I’m sure. The impact on the whole family was intense and life was not a bright happy shiny thing. After waking from the coma he was moved to brain injury rehab, also not the kind of topic to make small talk about really. It was a distressing topic to talk about, there was so much uncertainty about the future and the kids were not allowed to visit him at first as it would be too traumatic. So how does that work when I want to document every week? What can I put in my album, in words or images, that can be seen by those who read it?

I found the answer was complex. I wanted to write it all out, it was theraputic, calming and centring to think through the experience by writing it all down. It wasnt always words I wanted to share, but the process of project life gave me a moment to pause and reflect on my week. I would never have considered writing it down (except perhaps in a chat box to a friend to debrief) and found that it was really helpful.

For many years scrapbooking has been about choosing the photos and memories that were “scrap-worthy” for a lot of crafters. We have taken photos of smiling faces and shiny. happy days and our albums are full of bright and good memories. Project Life though is about every day, every week, you can do it however it works for you, but for me it was very much about the minutiae as well as the big events. Those little routines that we will miss next month or next year when they have changed.

It is a challenge beyond the change in page protectors and canvas size. More than just a change from working on a 12x12 to working on a 4x6 card, we are documenting the every day details, and they are sometimes not bright, not shiny. So what now?

I first turned to the community that is available to us as scrapbookers and found a wonderful, warm and supportive response. I also found some great ideas and solutions that others have used and used several over the months that were challenging.

Page 152: Life.Paper.Scrapbook. Issue 3

152 Life. Paper. Scrapbook.

Solution 1: Hide in a Pocket

There are heaps of products on the market you can use to partially or completely hide journalling or photos in a pocket. From Simple Stories to American Crafts, lots of manufacturers product adorable pockets to fit inside the page protectors. I went with a simpler solution to that and used a glassine bag, so that the photos could be barely visible but the horrid details were obscured from site. Unless you were determined to take out the card and open the bag to remove the photos, they were only a hint and not something to upset the reader, in person or online. This was important in the early weeks as I really didnt want the kids seeing these photos, but they are such a meaningful moment, this was the beginning. This is the goal post from which all progress is later measured. It was so helpful later to look back and see how far we’ve come.

Solution 2: Lift-the-flap

Petra Corcoran was among the most helpful with solutions and one suggestion from her that I loved, and embraced many times since, was to use a flip pocket and a tie to include photos or journaling that could be seen but would not automatically be visible. For the second week

I used this to show a good number of photos from the early hospital visits. Taking the photos was sometimes challenging, it was hard to know when it was appropriate or invited to take photos. What is a helpful and informative photo that will motivate the patient later and what is simply an invasion of privacy when someone is hurt and vulnerable? I had to use my best judgement and try to think what he would want in photos rather than what I felt like photographing. I included a few very abstract images to have some less upsetting ones if needed (hands holding, edge of the bed covers, the building directory board, etc). Another consideration is that visitors are rarely in the mood or feel appropriately prepared in their appearance and behaviour for photographs, however remembering who was there, who put everything down to be there is something important.

I love that this solution, like the envelope, requires the reader to actively choose to engage with this difficult content. The tie was deliberately a little difficult to undo to discourage my kids, who were also asked not to open it. It also gave me more room to add than the envelope, which is restricted to the size of the pocket it is in. I had a lot of pages of photos early on.

Page 153: Life.Paper.Scrapbook. Issue 3

Life. Paper. Scrapbook. 153

Solution 3: Inserts

As the months past and the kids were seeing and visiting with him more, it was less important to hide photos and stories, and in fact was an important part of our routine to visit and spend time together. I moved the stories and photos into inserts. This was partly because the story often felt isolated in our weekly routine, and seemed to fit on it’s own rather than part of the weekly spread about regular life, but mostly because it made it easier for me to share my weekly spread on my blog if I could easily remove the section I didn’t wish to share by keeping it in an insert. It was not my journey to share, I wanted it in my album though, my family story is the story of the album.

In reflecting on these months, I found it both challenging and extremely rewarding to force myself to document things that were not very happy or upbeat memories. As the difficulties continued for months, it was so helpful to have those earlier times recorded for a reference and to help actually remember what it felt like and looked like, as it was soon a blur in my memory. I was certainly not the only one to appreciate the photos later, the visual evidence of all the progress and sense of achievement that came from being able to see it. Details

we would have forgotten, all the same feelings that Project Life gives with the more positive experiences, like watching your garden through the seasons, or your skill in cooking improve in your instagram photos. If you find yourself in a challenging or negative situation, I would strongly encourage you to consider including it in your scrapbooking and the stories that you are documenting. It wasn’t something I ever planned to do. I personally shied away from the most challenging parts of my life when it came to my scrapbooks. I saw them as a place for happy memories and to escape the hard stuff. Project life challenged me to face that and overcome it, and I love what that has given me in return, strength to cope in difficult times and an irreplaceable perspective on the experience. With a little care and consideration in the process, I think it is, without doubt, an enriching experience to record the less than perfect life we lead.
