A"Famous"Unwritten"Letter"" "

This is a letter that could have been written to the Apostle Paul had he applied for missionary service under some of today’s modern missionary boards.

Dear Mr. Apostle Paul: We recently received an application from you for service under our Board. It is our policy to be as rank and open-minded as possible with all our applicants. We have made an exhaustive survey of your case. To be plain, we are surprised that you have been able to “pass” as a bonafide missionary. We are told that you are afflicted with severe eye trouble. This is certain to be an insuperable handicap to an effective ministry. We require 20-20 vision. Do you think it seemly for a missionary to do part-time secular work? We heard that you are making tents on the side. In a letter to the Church at Philippi you admitted that they were the only church supporting you. We can’t help but wonder if you are too materialistic. Is it true that you have a jail record? Certain brethren report that you did two years’ time at Caesarea, and was imprisoned at Rome. As with all prisoners, were you really innocent? You made so much trouble for the businessmen at Ephesus that they refer to you as ‘the man who turned the world upside down’. Sensationalism has no place in missions! We also deplore the lurid over-the-wall episode at Damascus. We are appalled at you obvious lack of conciliatory behavior. Diplomatic men are not stoned and dragged out of the city gate, or assaulted by furious mobs. Have you ever suspected that gentler words might gain you more friends? I have enclosed for you your personal copy of Dalius Carnagus’ book, ‘How to Win Jews and Influence Greeks.” In one of your letters you refer to yourself as Paul the Aged. Our new mission policies do not anticipate a surplus of elderly recipients. We understand, too that you are given to fantasies. At Troas, you saw, “man of Macedoniaa” and at another time you “caught up into the third heaven” and even claimed that “the Lord stood by” you. We reckon that more realistic and practical minds are needed in the task of world evangelism. Your sermons are much too long for the times. At one place you talked until after midnight and a young man was so sleepy that he fell out of the window and broke his neck. Nobody is saved after the first 20 minutes. “Stand up, speak up and shut up, is our advice.” You wrote recently to Timothy that you had “fought a good fight”. Fighting is hardly a recommendation for a missionary. No fight is a good fight. Jesus came not to bring a sword, but peace. You boast that “I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus”. What on earth do you mean? It hurts me to tell you this, brother Paul, but in all of the 25 years of my experience, I have never met a man so opposite to the requirements of our Foreign Missions board. If we accepted you, we would break every rule of modern missionary practice.” .... Most Sincerely yours, J. Flavious Fluffy head, Sec. Foreign Missions Board

Amazing! Even more amazing, there are many Christians, and some of them Bereans, who feel they are not qualified to spread the “good news” of Jesus Christ. But, just like the Apostle why don’t you “have at it.” You just may be surprised with one of the greatest joys of your life - seeing God use you to lead another to Christ. Go ahead, we won’t report you to the Missions Board.!!! ! ! !! !!

You Can Make a Difference ! Let me begin by commending you! For a church of our size, we have a fairly good number of first-time visitors to our Sunday morning worship. Visitors are not only the life-blood of church growth, they represent an intentional effort on the members of Berea to “Make Him Known” in our community and our county. It’s very rare that people just “show up” at church without an invitation or hearing about a church from someone they know. So...good job Berea... and keep up the good work.

Now let me follow that up with a challenge! While we get a fair amount of first-time visitors, that is not always translating into a fair amount of 2nd & 3rd and 4th time visitors. It’s great to have someone visit our church family, but our prayer and goal should be for them to become a part of our church family. First-time visitors reflect what’s going on outside the four walls of the church building. Follow-up visitors that keep coming and finally become a part of our church largely reflect what’s going on inside the four walls of the church building once they are here.

While there are many things we could be doing better, often it’s just a matter of personal taste and what someone is looking for in a church. When you try out a new restaurant, the food, service and ambience might all be at a high standard but if it’s not the kind of food you like to eat, no matter how well done it is, you probably won’t be back. Many people who come to “check us out” find out that the way we “do church” on Sunday morning isn’t what they are looking for, and therefor, don’t come back.

However, there are those who truly don’t know what they are looking for! They don’t have a preconceived idea of how church should be done and base their decision to return, or not, solely on the experience they have while they are here. Much of that falls directly on the shoulders of the church staff, and we strive to do the best we can. But there ARE some things YOU can do to ensure the very best experience possible for a first-time visitor to berea. So, with that in mind, let me suggest a few things you can say to our guests that may encourage them to give us more than one visit. 1. “Thank you for being here.” How easy is that? 2. “Let me help you with that.” If you see someone who needs help, help! 3. “Please, take my seat.” If offering your seat opens up enough room for their family or keep them from crawling across others to get to the middle of a row, do so! 4.”Can I help you find something?” New places can be confusing and intimidating. If someone “looks” like they don’t know where to go, they probably don’t. 5. “Let me introduce you to ___________.” The return rate of guests goes up as they get to know more people, so introduce them to those near you. 6. “Would you like to join us for lunch?” Obviously, this calls for wisdom in reading the situation, but studies show this to be extremely effective in encouraging return visitors. See you Sunday, David
