Life Science PowerPoint Topic C:Heredity
Were is hereditary information contained
Hereditary information is stored in genes located in the chromosomes of each cell. Human cells contain about 30,000 different genes in
23 different pairs of chromosomes.
Sutton’s Experiment
Sutton (a scientist)preformed an experiment with grasshoppers and genes. He learned that when a sperm cell with (12) chromosomes and an egg with a (12) chromosomes join it forms (24) chromosomes the original amount of chromosomes that both parents had. Chromosomes are in pairs of 2 (12 in total) and 1 of each came from the mom or the dad.
Sutton’s Experiment
This experiment showed signs of Mendel’s hereditary factors(genes) from one generation to another.
Sexual Reproduction
For sexual reproduction sperm and an egg is required, for the correct amount of chromosomes which mean the offspring inherit half of the genes from each parent.
Asexual Reproduction
The parenchyma cells in the plant can divide into specialized cells, helping the plant regain lost parts or germinating into a whole different plant entirely.
No need for a pollinator for reproductive success and the “offspring” obtain all of the genetic coding that made up the parent plant, which means its an exact copy of the original.
Traits
Every organism has a set of instructions the specifies its traits.
As explained these instructions are stored in the organisms chromosomes
Heredity is the passage of these instructions from one generation to another
As with the polar bear with its white coat and its big claws to grab onto the icy surfaces
This information is show everywhere in nature Polar Bears Elephants Goats Penguins Giraffes Lions Foxes
