Brief synopsis of career: After graduating with a degree in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery from Glasgow University in 1996, I worked in the UK in mixed practice for 2 years before working in equine practice for a further 2 years. I then completed an equine surgery residency at the University of Liverpool in 2003 before then completing a PhD on the Epidemiology of Equine Colic at the University in 2006. During this time I gained the RCVS Certificate in Equine Soft Tissue Surgery and the European Diploma in Equine Surgery. Since 2006 I have worked at the University of Liverpool as a Senior Lecturer in Equine Soft Tissue Surgery and most recently have been appointed Professor of Equine Surgery and Head of the Equine Surgery team. My job is split between clinical/teaching and research duties. Clinical duties include running the soft tissue surgical service at the University’s equine hospital when on clinics and providing emergency surgical cover out-of-hours. My research is conducted within the University’s Institute of Infection and Global Health where I am involved in a number of collaborative equine research projects and currently hold research grants totalling £300,000. I have authored / co-authored 34 peer reviewed papers, written several book chapters on colic and imaging of the equine head and have just completed a sole author textbook on Equine emergencies (Published Autumn 2013). I hold a post graduate teaching qualification and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK. I am also an RCVS recognised Specialist in Equine Surgery. I have worked as a treating veterinary surgeon at several international 3 day events for over 5 years and was appointed as the veterinary clinic emergency team leader at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.

Date: 03.02.2014 Name: Janet Daly Qualifications: BSc PhD Current Job Title: Lecturer in Comparative Virology Institute: University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science If you wish, you can include a weblink to your institution: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/vet/index.aspx Main Research and/or Clinical Interests My expertise is in the field of zoonotic RNA viruses, particularly those affecting both horses and people. I have studied their epidemiology and evolution, development and testing of vaccines and diagnostics, and immunopathogenesis. I have extensive experience of strain surveillance of equine influenza viruses. In collaboration with mathematical modellers and using data from vaccination and challenge studies in ponies and surveillance studies, I have been involved in the development of models to predict the likelihood of vaccine breakdown and occurrence of outbreaks in equine populations. My more recent studies have focused on understanding the molecular and cellular pathogenesis, host range restrictions and transmissibility of equine influenza viruses. These studies include the development of ex vivo tissue models and generation of recombinant viruses with defined mutations. In the field of human influenza, I was involved in developing a cell-based susceptibility assay for neuraminidase inhibitors of influenza. I have also studied the genetic and immunological safety of DNA vaccines in which influenza was used as a model system in mouse studies. My expertise extends to West Nile and Japanese encephalitis viruses, members of the Flaviviridae for which both horses and humans are incidental hosts. I am currently involved in the development of serological tests for these viruses. Brief synopsis of career I obtained a BSc (Hons) in Animal Physiology and Nutrition from the University of Leeds. I then worked as a laboratory technician at the Animal Health Trust for a year before beginning part-time study towards a PhD on equine influenza. After gaining my PhD in 1995, I moved into the human influenza field, first at the National Institute of Biological Standards and Control, then at Glaxo Wellcome (now Glaxo Smithkline). I returned to the Animal Health Trust in 2001 where I built up the influenza group over the next 5 years. Although I then moved to the University of Liverpool to study immunopathology of Japanese encephalitis virus, I maintained my involvement in equine virology. After a brief spell as a medical writer, I joined the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science in 2009.
