World Leprosy DayLeprosy is an infectious disease of the skin and nerves which, if not diagnosed and treated quickly, can result in devastating disabilities. People previously or presently aected by leprosy are subjected to discrimination and social exclusion in some countries.Despite being a curable disease, people are suering from discrimination even after they have been cured of leprosy as they are labelled ‘ex-patients’. To raise awareness on this, WHO observes World Leprosy Day on the last Sunday of January 2020.

In commemoration of this, Department of Community Health Nursing, CCN organized a series of events for a week between 20 and 24 of January on the theme- ‘Ending Discrimination, Stigma and Prejudice’. Students of B.Sc. Nursing carried out a door-to-door survey in Kadambadi Village, Pooncheri to identify leprosy suspects. Out of 146 members from 76 families they surveyed, three cases were identied with skin lesions with loss of sensation and referred to the Community Rural Health Centre. In the following days, students performed Street play, Puppet show and Villupattu to the village residents, creating awareness on the disease besides a demonstration on ulcer wound care. On 24th January, a CNE programme was organized, concluding the commemoration of World Leprosy Day.

Today’s Architecture has been shaped by countless cultures and civilizations that came before us. Time and again, architecture ismolded of changing needs of society in all aspects whereas climate is one such crucial aspect. We grow trees; recycle all possible energies, yet climate changes occur despite all our ‘go green’ strategies. Lest we know that 3D printing technology oers more opportunities which could further reduce our negative impact on the environment. Worldwide there have been many innovations 3D printing has made within architecture, either in the designing or construction process.

Tai Chi trainingChettinad School of Physiotherapy (CSP) inaugurated Tai Chi training, a value-added course for the BPT students in presence of Dr P Senthil, Professor/Dean, CSP and the invited guests Shihan K. Discussion under Banyan tree As part of our "Learn from the Masters" initiative, Chettinad School of Architecture has been inviting eminent architects to our campus and share their experience and knowledge with our students. This time our students got a chance to interact with Ar. Palaniappan who is into both practice & academics for the past three decades.

Students were exposed to discuss design thinking, the process of design, practical diculties in the eld and examples of real-life experience. This helps them in gaining insights about industry, prepare them in advance and ready to roll when students nish the course. The entire discussion happened under the beautiful banyan tree in our campus to provide students a dierent view and comfort.

National Deworming Week Programme

World Health Organization estimates that 241 million children between the ages of 1 and 14 years are at risk of parasitic intestinal worms in India, known as Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH). These children represent approximately 68% of children in this age-group and approximately 28% of the number of children estimated to be at-risk of STH infections globally. These parasitic infections result from poor sanitation and hygiene conditions, and are easily transmitted among children through contact with infected soil. Children with the highest intensity of STH infestation are often too sick or too tired to concentrate at school or attend school at all. In areas where parasitic worms are endemic, administering safe, eective deworming drugs to children at schools is a development “best buy” due to its impact on educational and economic outcomes and low cost. Rigorous research has shown signicant gains from school-based deworming programs on children’s health, access to education and livelihoods.

The wind howled in painAkin to homeless animals ravaging villages. As though we'd much to gain,Meticulously, we felled trees.

Mounds of land in the middle of the seaGurgled as they drowned.Abandoned by all The winged had to ee.

The earth beneath my feet Shifted tectonically in unease.Clouds bellowed over rubblesWhen with soft breaths, life began to cease.

From the turmoil, its metallic sound;Rung by human hand sounded the knell. The suerer was life,And the road went straight to hell.

Article on the Personal Liberty in the Context of LawThe Right to Life and Personal Liberty is assured by the Indian Constitution

under Article 21. This is a very important and wide topic and has several

implications for the citizens of India. According to Article 21, “Protection of

Life and Personal Liberty: No person shall be deprived of his life or

personal liberty except according to procedure established by law.” This is

a fundamental right which is available both to our citizens as well as

foreigners. Article 21 is the one of the most important fundamental rights

that constitution guarantees.

The right specically mentions that no person shall be deprived of life and

liberty except as per the procedure established by law. This implies that

this right has been provided against the State only. State here includes not

just the government, but also, government departments, local bodies, the

Legislatures, etc. Any private individual encroaching on these rights of

another individual does not amount to a violation of Article 21. The remedy

for the victim, in this case, would be under Article 226 or under general

law. The right to life is not just about the right to survive. It also entails

being able to live a complete life of dignity and meaning. The chief goal of

Article 21 is that when the right to life or liberty of a person is taken away

by the State, it should only be according to the prescribed procedure of

law. Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) makes attempted suicide

a criminal oence which is punishable with imprisonment and ne.

There were many debates on whether this should continue since mental

health experts have argued that people who attempt suicide need

adequate counselling and not punishment. The Mental Healthcare Act,

2017 was passed by the Parliament and the law came into force in 2018.

This Act is meant to provide “for mental healthcare and services for

persons with mental illness and to protect, promote and full the rights of

such persons during delivery of mental healthcare and services.” This law

decriminalises suicide in India. The law states, “Notwithstanding anything

contained in section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, any person who

attempts to commit suicide shall be presumed, unless proved otherwise,

to have severe stress and shall not be tried and punished under the said

Code”.
