In September of 1831, Michael Faraday made the discovery of Electromagnetic Induction.
Faraday attached two wires to a disc and rotated the disc between the opposing poles of a horseshoe magnet creating
an electric current.

First commercial electric system (US)
• First distribution systems were DC (Thomas Edison)
Electric load was essentially incandescent lamps (100V DC)
• Other systems (motors) required other voltages
DC could be used wit storage batteries (used as backup)
DC generators (110V) could be used in parallel to increase production capacity
• DC generators had to be within 2.4km (1.5mile) from users
• Different voltages required different generators
Edison had invented an electric meter (DC)

A.Graham BELL
Sevgilinin "tam adı" "Alessandra Lolita Oswaldo" dur. Bu sevimli genç kız, telefonu icat eden Alexander Graham Bell’in sevgilisiydi. Graham Bell, telefonu icad edince, ilk hattı sevgilisinin evine çekmişti.

Bells Photophone
1880 - Photophone Transmitter
1880 - Photophone Receiver
“The ordinary man…will find a little difficulty in comprehending how sunbeams are to be used. Does Prof. Bell intend to connect Boston and
Cambridge…with a line of sunbeams hung on telegraph posts, and, if so, what diameter are the sunbeams to be…?…will it be necessary to
insulate them against the weather…?…until (the public) sees a man going through the streets with a coil of No. 12 sunbeams on his
shoulder, and suspending them from pole to pole, there will be a general feeling that there is something about Prof. Bell’s photophone which
places a tremendous strain on human credulity.”

Veri – Enformasyon - Bilgi

![Page 17: Lider Davranış Geliştirmeckk.com.tr/ders/bilgisayarorg/01 Digital Systems.pdf · A brief history 1800 – voltaic pile developed by Alessandro Volta, a precursor to the battery](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022041720/5e4e496e21a7d4121814bb9a/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
![Page 18: Lider Davranış Geliştirmeckk.com.tr/ders/bilgisayarorg/01 Digital Systems.pdf · A brief history 1800 – voltaic pile developed by Alessandro Volta, a precursor to the battery](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022041720/5e4e496e21a7d4121814bb9a/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
• Turing’in muhteşem fikri ilk kez 24 yaşındayken 1936 yılında yazdığı güzümüzde efsane olan “Hesaplanbilir sayılarda karar veren problemlerin uygulanması” isimli 36 sayfalık kitapta yayınlandı.
![Page 19: Lider Davranış Geliştirmeckk.com.tr/ders/bilgisayarorg/01 Digital Systems.pdf · A brief history 1800 – voltaic pile developed by Alessandro Volta, a precursor to the battery](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022041720/5e4e496e21a7d4121814bb9a/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
![Page 20: Lider Davranış Geliştirmeckk.com.tr/ders/bilgisayarorg/01 Digital Systems.pdf · A brief history 1800 – voltaic pile developed by Alessandro Volta, a precursor to the battery](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022041720/5e4e496e21a7d4121814bb9a/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
![Page 21: Lider Davranış Geliştirmeckk.com.tr/ders/bilgisayarorg/01 Digital Systems.pdf · A brief history 1800 – voltaic pile developed by Alessandro Volta, a precursor to the battery](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022041720/5e4e496e21a7d4121814bb9a/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
![Page 22: Lider Davranış Geliştirmeckk.com.tr/ders/bilgisayarorg/01 Digital Systems.pdf · A brief history 1800 – voltaic pile developed by Alessandro Volta, a precursor to the battery](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022041720/5e4e496e21a7d4121814bb9a/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)

Verileri saklar. Verileri çok kısa zamanda arayıp bulur. Verileri yazılan program doğrultusunda işler. Büyük boyutlu problemleri kısa zamanda çözer.
Bilgisayarlar iki ana unsurdan oluşurlar: Donanım (hardware), bilgisayarların fiziksel kısımlarına donanım denilmektedir.
Ekran, klavye, Sabit disk (harddisk), fare, yazıcı, bellek, mikroişlemci, tarayıcı,… Yazılımı (software): donanımı kullanmak için gerekli programlar. İşletim sistemleri ve altında çalışan bütün programlar.

Computers use the base-2 system because it makes it easier to implement them
with our current electronic technology. Building a computer to operate on base-2 is
less expensive right now.
Bits, Bytes and Words
The word bit is a shortening of the words "Binary digit."
We can use the same method as base-10 to determine the value of 1011, but instead
of 10 use 2:
(1 * 2^3) + (0 * 2^2) + (1 * 2^1) + (1 * 2^0) = 8 + 0 + 2 + 1 = 11
Decimal digits have 10 possible values ranging from 0 to 9, bits have only two
possible values: 0 and 1. Therefore, a binary number is composed of only 0s
and 1s, like 1011.
![Page 66: Lider Davranış Geliştirmeckk.com.tr/ders/bilgisayarorg/01 Digital Systems.pdf · A brief history 1800 – voltaic pile developed by Alessandro Volta, a precursor to the battery](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022041720/5e4e496e21a7d4121814bb9a/html5/thumbnails/66.jpg)
Bit, Bit/San Bit: Dijital elektronikte ve binary sayı sisteminde sadece 0 ve 1 değerleri vardır. Tüm işlemler bu iki değer üzerinden yapılır. 0 ya da 1 bilgisinin her birine bit denir. Bit→0/1 den oluşan bilgi
• Bits are the units used to describe an amount of data in a network
– 1 kilobit (Kbit) = 1 x 103 bits = 1,000 bits
– 1 megabit (Mbit) = 1 x 106 bits = 1,000,000 bits
– 1 gigabit (Gbit) = 1 x 109 bits = 1,000,000,000 bits
BPS (Bit Per Second); Saniyede iletilen bit sayısına BPS denir.
• Seconds are the units used to measure time
– 1 millisecond (msec) = 1 x 10-3 seconds = 0.001 seconds
– 1 microsecond (msec) = 1 x 10-6 seconds = 0.000001 seconds
– 1 nanosecond (nsec) = 1 x 10-9 seconds = 0.000000001 seconds
• Bits per second are the units used to measure channel capacity/bandwidth and throughput
– bit per second (bps)
– kilobits per second (Kbps)
– megabits per second (Mbps)
![Page 67: Lider Davranış Geliştirmeckk.com.tr/ders/bilgisayarorg/01 Digital Systems.pdf · A brief history 1800 – voltaic pile developed by Alessandro Volta, a precursor to the battery](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022041720/5e4e496e21a7d4121814bb9a/html5/thumbnails/67.jpg)
– Bandwidth: width of the frequency range of signal or transmission (Hz) e.g. human voice: 100 ~ 3300 Hz, bandwidth 3200, twisted pair: 4kHz.
– Capacity: memory capacity (byte)
– Capacity: rate in bits per second
• Baud rate = how many symbols per second
• Bit rate = number of bits / symbol * Baud rate
• How to determine the number of bits per symbol?
– Number of bits/symbol = log_2(number of symbols)
• E.g: eight voltage outputs, how many bits per symbol?

Bit Rate / Baud Rate – Bit rate is the number of bits per second. Baud rate is the number of signal units per second. Baud rate is less
than or equal to the bit rate.
– Bit rate is important in computer efficiency
Baud Rate’i kullanmadaki amaç band genişliğini daha verimli kullanmak.
– Baud rate is important in data transmission. Baud rate determines the bandwidth required to send signal
– Baud rate = bit rate / # bits per signal unit
– An analog signal carries 4 bits in each signal unit. If 1000 signal units are sent per second, find the baud rate and the bit rate
• Baud rate = 1000 bauds per second (baud/s)
• Bit rate = 1000 x 4 = 4000 bps
– The bit rate of a signal is 3000. If each signal unit carries 6 bits, what is the baud rate?
• Baud rate = 3000/6 =500 bauds/sec

Byte Byte: Bellek boyutunu veriri.

Symbol rate – Symbol rate in symbols per second = (Data rate in bits per second × 204) / (188 × bits per symbol). – The 204 is the number of bytes in a packet including the 16 trailing Reed-Solomon error checking
and correction bytes. The 188 is the number of data bytes (187 bytes) plus the leading packet sync byte (0x47).
– The bits per symbol is the (modulation's power of 2) × (Forward Error Correction).
– So for example, in 64-QAM modulation 64 = 2^6 so the bits per symbol is 6. The Forward Error Correction (FEC) is usually expressed as a fraction; i.e., 1/2, 3/4, etc. In the case of 3/4 FEC, for every 3 bits of data, you are sending out 4 bits, one of which is for error correction.
Example:
– given bit rate = 18096263 – Modulation type = 64-QAM – FEC = ¾

Binary • In Computr Systems we concentrate on binary (base 2)
– Why?
• Because digital components (from which the computer is built) can be in one of two states : on or off
• We use 1 and 0 to represent these two states
– We want to develop a method for representing information in binary
• numbers (positive, negative, integer, floating point, fraction), strings of characters, booleans, images, sounds, programming instructions
– For unsigned integer values, we can store them directly using binary
• we convert from one to the other using the conversion algorithms on the previous slide where base = 2
• BIT is a unit of information equivalent to the result of a choice between only 2 possible alternatives in the binary number system.
• BYTE is a sequence of 8 bits (enough to represent one character of alphanumeric data) processed as a single unit for information.
Some useful powers
of 2 – these illustrate
the values of each

Why Binary Arithmetic?
• Hardware can only deal with binary digits, 0 and 1.
• Must represent all numbers, integers or floating point, positive or negative, by binary digits, called bits.
• Can devise electronic circuits to perform arithmetic operations: add, subtract, multiply and divide, on binary numbers.

• Bilgisayar güçleri genellikler üç birim ile ölçülür: RAM kapasitesi, kelime boyutu ve işlemci hızı. • RAM Kapasitesi. Günümüzde anabilgisayarların ve süper bilgisayarların bellekleri GB ve hatta TB
seviyesindedir.

Fractions • We can extend our unsigned representational system of binary to
include a decimal point – After the decimal point, the i exponent, in 2i, becomes negative
• So, we now have the ½ column, the ¼ column, etc – 1011.1001 =
– 1*23 + 0*22 + 1*21 + 1*20 + 1*2-1 + 0*2-2 + 0*2-3 + 1*2-4 =
– 8 + 2 + 1 + ½ + 1/16 =
– 11 9/16 = 11.5625
• What is .4304? Use 8-bits with 4 fraction bits – .4304 has a .25, .125, .03125, .015625, and more fractions, but this exceeds the number of fraction
bits so the number is 0000.0110
– But 0000.0110 = .125 + 0.3125 = .375, we have a loss in precision!
• In the fraction representation, our decimal point is typically fixed, so this is often known as fixed point representation
• We will cover a floating point representation later

Negation
• Twos complement operation
– Take the Boolean complement of each bit of the integer (including the sign bit)
– Treating the result as an unsigned binary integer, add 1
– The negative of the negative of that number is itself:
+18 = 00010010 (twos complement) bitwise complement = 11101101 + 1 11101110 = -18
-18 = 11101110 (twos complement) bitwise complement = 00010001 + 1 00010010 = +18

Most natural quantities that we see are analog and vary continuously. Analog
systems can generally handle higher power than digital systems.
Digital systems can process, store, and transmit data more
efficiently but can only assign discrete values to each point.

Digital electronics uses circuits that have two states, which are
represented by two different voltage levels called HIGH and LOW. The
voltages represent numbers in the binary system.
Binary Digits and Logic Levels
In binary, a single number is called a
bit (for binary digit). A bit can have
the value of either a 0 or a 1,
depending on if the voltage is HIGH
or LOW.

Digital waveforms change between the LOW and HIGH
levels. A positive going pulse is one that goes from a normally
LOW logic level to a HIGH level and then back again. Digital
waveforms are made up of a series of pulses.
