PRESIDENT’S NOTE

August HoursBeginning Monday, August 3

Limited Services; masks required

I know this seems early to be discussing the Consolidated Election of 2021 that will take place next April 6, 2021. I know everyone just wants to get through our national election this November. Our state legislature through legislation has set the calendar events for the April 2021 election in motion. Some of you are saying what is it or why is it important? It is when you as citizens, have the opportunity to vote for your local government bodies, i.e. library district board,

park districts, or village board of trustees. Your local bodies of government have more influence on your daily lives through your property taxes and the services they provide to you.

The Poplar Creek Public Library District will have three Trustee 6-year terms and two Trustee 4-year terms up for election in 2021. Trustees on the Board are responsible for overseeing the management and fiduciary responsibilities and good stewardship of the library district. The Board meets once a month, and Trustees serve on at least one committee and committees meet quarterly. Current committees include Finance, Policy, and Building and Maintenance. Trustees are not paid but are elected officials and are accountable under the current ethics and conflict of economic interest laws. It is helpful to know a little about finance, but initial training is provided to new Trustees on finance/budgets, Open Meetings Act, Freedom of Information Act, Robert’s Rules of Order, are among some of the topics covered. The Poplar Creek Public Library District includes parts of Bartlett, Bloomingdale, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Keeneyville, Schaumburg, and Streamwood. The district represents over 70,000 residents. Anyone who is a legal resident of the district and a registered voter is eligible to run for Trustee. You must submit a petition packet to get on the April ballot. For the Library Trustee position, your petitions must have 50 registered voters from the district sign your petitions. Election packets may be picked up from the Main Library’s Administrative Office—watch our website for a September date. All directions and materials will be included in that packet. If you have questions, please contact Debra Stombres, our Executive Director at 630.837.6800 (Option 1).
