Indian tree (Polyalthia longifolia)

is a small tree that grows to a

height of 15 m, with a high and

narrow shape. A native of India and

Sri Lanka, it was recently

introduced to the Philippines and

has become so popular that it is

now widely cultivated throughout

the country. It is functional as a

Challenges?

1. In USA , many of whom entered the

profession as a second career or later in life.

2. as many as 60% of current librarians are

predicted to retire by 2025.

3. Poor retention of Generation X librarians =

times librarians are frustrated by

bad policies from the

ACQUISITIONS ISSUES

“The bottom line of any library’s acquisition function is to acquire ALL the

library materials the library intends to collect according to the collection

development policy and by obtaining the materials in the quickest manner

and the most cost effective way. This sounds simple yet it

involves the professionalism of the collection development and

acquisitions librarians working together, often with a

reliable vendor to achieve the goals.”

“Finally we come to the issue of money. I have never met a

single librarian among the thousands of them I have

met over the years who has ever told me that he had

more than enough funds for his library. Librarians are

always complaining about the lack of money.” (Yeow-Fei )

NEW DEVELOPMENTS AND TRENDS IN BOOK ACQUISITION

“One of the new developments and trends in acquisition for Asian academic libraries is the

forming of consortia for acquisition to create value and bring

maximum benefits to all participating libraries”

“The economies of scale provide for a close working relationship with the

supplier in getting the books at the most cost-effective manner and

fastest possible speed. The professionalism and state-of-the-art

vendor system will also greatly enhance the duties of collection development and

acquisition librarians.” (Yeow-Fei )

Leadership and management to address current and prevailing issues like internet access and uneven access to information

“Librarians must have the

persuading charisma to

convince administrators to

capitalize on technology.” Alenzuela, R. (2014)

“The more developed library had a

librarian who enjoyed the

confidence of the school principal,

district supervisor, and even the

mayor. Whereas the librarian in the

less developed library—despite

having more assistants than the other

librarian—could not even get the

different subject departments to

entrust the collections in their offices

to the library.”Totanes (2005)

PASLI 38th General Assembly and National Conference, Diversion 21 Hotel, Iloilo City, April 20, 2016

“What I’m saying is that before

we can even talk about money,

we need leaders who can

communicate what an

increased budget for the

library can contribute to its

parent-institution’s mission.

As I discovered through my

thesis, two individuals given

similar amounts of money will

not necessarily achieve similar

goals. It is not money that will

put knowledge to

work. People will put

knowledge to work.” Totanes (2005)

Benefits of Evidence-Based Practice

- Provides evidence that library program makes a difference to learning outcomes

- Basis for targeting time, energies and scarce resources

• Helps you not to do things that do not work or that do not matter

• Reflective, iterative process of informing instructional process: it informs, not misleads or detracts from day-to-day practice

• Job satisfaction and confidence in the role that library plays in the school

• Moves beyond subjective, guess work, hunches, and advocacy Todd, R.J.(2002)
