Teachable Moments

Page 15: Liberty School Lunch Time Waste Audit 1 - January 19, 2017

Good things in this school lunch room.

• No Paper Lunch Sacks –all reusable lunch bags

• Great reusable lunch trays with paper liners

• Only 2 pieces of Styrofoam from all lunches

• Recycle class/office paper & #1 plastic bottles

Recommended Improvements

• Need more washable containers and fewer baggies and single serving packaged foods from home lunches.

• 31 unopened milks could have been turned back in to lunch service. Lots of milk left in cartons. This could be poured into buckets. Cartons can be recycled in some programs.

• Students need to tell parents they are packing too much food, as cookies, sandwiches, and fruit was uneaten in too many cases.

• Food service also served too much food for many students. Lunch workers said they do not think they can cut portion size because of national school lunch program standards.

• Need to eliminate hurdles to starting a donation table for uneaten fruits.
