LUC Th e Hague fosters critical thinking to cope with a complex and changing world

Global Challenges: ProsperityTh e Prosperity course introduces you to the ways in which institutions shape human welfare, and to how the ‘right’ institutions can be designed, created, and reinforced. As such, it provides you with the social-scientifi c tools to think about and address the global challenges of good governance, inter national development, and public health.

Global Challenges: DiversityTh e Diversity course focuses on three historical moments, and investigates their legacies for present-day modes of conceptualizing and understanding diversity: (1) Expanding the world: Th e European dis coveries of the Americas (1492) & Africa (1498); (2) Revolting against authority and people: French (1798) and Russian (1917) Revolutions; (3) Imagining another world: May 1968 and the Arab Spring (2011).

History of PhilosophyKey to any engagement with the liberal arts and sciences is a refl ection on how knowledge has been created, organised, and legitimised throughout history and across the world. History of Philosophy considers how critical ideas have changed over time and through space.

History of ScienceHistory of Science is the pursuit of truth through time. Th e course examines the major turning points in science, the big leaps forward, the paradigm-changing advances which continue to awe and inspire. Th e course systematically examines how these discoveries occurred, their common denominators, and the continued relevance of these great innovations to the big challenges confronting modern society.

Urban Studies & Community ProjectThe Urban Studies course at LUC will introduce you to how scholars from varying disciplines study cities and ask you to think about these complex and captivating spaces both academically, but also from a more personal perspective. The Hague will serve as a laboratory for observing and exploring many of the themes discussed in class. This course will discuss urban history and theory,

migration, public space, the environment and sustainability, rapid urbanization, urban politics and economics.

The Community Project will help you experience and appreciate how global challenges manifest themselves locally, right here in The Hague. By cultivating reciprocal partnerships with city government and community organisations, LUC creates

service-learning opportunities that con nect classroom knowledge to practical, hands-on experiences, all the while developing your capacities in leadership, reciprocity.

The LUC Brill-Nijhoff Writing Institute

A partnership that LUC has established with the prestigious publishing house, Brill, which was founded in Leiden in 1683. In collaboration with its celebrated imprint, Martinus Nijhoff,Brill has agreed to sponsor the LUC writing centre with a writing clinic and various other activities for aspiring writers and intellectuals.

The History of Liberal Arts and Sciences The concept characterises the first universities in medieval Europe. Leiden University (estab. 1575) is one of these universities. Students in Leiden studied the Artes Liberales before continuing with a degree in Law, Medicine or Theology. The medieval Artes Liberales form the basis for the modern Liberal Arts and Sciences philosophy.

LUC The Hague Research Centre

The LUC Research Centre is dedicated to supporting advanced, interdisciplinary research agendas in the fields of Peace & Justice, Sustainability, Prosperity and Diversity. Its focus is on making this research accessible to students, and on involving students in the research itself.

MajorsEach major at LUC is distinctively themed to address questions of the Global Challenges of today, thus providing an interdisciplinary lens to building knowledge for a better world. In addition, each major comes with a set of required methodology courses to help you acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of the research methods specific to the disciplines involved.

Human Diversity (BA)Today, globalization makes us all aware of how closely we are connected to, and often dependent upon, the actions of people who are far distant from us. Human migration and economic liberalization have transformed local communities, bringing the seemingly “distant” into close proximity. Given these developments, how can we devise ways to share resources and negotiate conflicts--without succumbing to fear, xenophobia, racism, or violence? How can we understand the origins and consequences of human differences, be they defined by race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, or any number of other factors? The Human Diversity major

draws insights from the humanities and social sciences in order to help you address the global challenge of living together peaceably and equitably in socially diverse communities.

International Justice (BA)Home to the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, The Hague is the perfect backdrop to explore conceptions of justice in our global society. Justice issues related to human rights, peace, security and the environment present legal and policy challenges for governmental and non-governmental actors, international institutions, and civil society that extend beyond national borders and single disciplines. The International Justice major is built around three key themes of international law and dispute settlement, regional integration, and international security.

World Politics (BA)World politics provokes the need for globally conscious responses to issues such as sovereignty, intervention, security, nationalism, migration, imperialism, terrorism, and globalisation. It also means understanding the roles played by the many different actors

in world politics, from nation states and international organisations to individuals, NGOs, social movements and multinational corporations. The World Politics major equips you with the knowledge and skills to understand the shape of political relations in a globalising world and their connection to peace and security.

Earth, Energy and Sustainability (BSc)At the start of the 20th century there were fewer than 2 billion people. Now at 7 billion, Earth’s population is on target to reach 8 billion by 2027. How has this dramatic increase in human population impacted Earth’s life support systems and natural resources? What is sustainability? How do we achieve a sustainable society? These are very big questions and very complex topics to cover.  The Earth, Energy and Sustainability major operates at the forefront of the field of environmental sciences, with a balance between understanding key concepts within a classroom setting, and applying the gained knowledge in real-life situations. This major is focused on Ecosystem, Earth systems and Resource Management.

9

Page 10: Liberal Arts Sciences Global Challenges Leiden University College the Hague

Global Public Health (BSc)Despite tremendous advances in the past decades in medicine, education, and food production, public health remains a major global concern. Global Public Health is an ideal major for students interested in health problems attributed to social and cultural inequality, health care access, migration and demographic change, epidemics, natural disasters and environmental change. Th e goal of the Global Public Health major at LUC is for you to develop a theoretical and applied understanding of the causes and risk factors associated with public health problems, ranging from community to global scales.

Governance, Economics, and Development (BSc)Wrenching poverty, global inequality, violent political and ethnic strife, dead-locked unresponsive or even collapsing governments, growing dissatisfaction with democracy and missed opportunities for innovation - these are merely some of the challenges of governance and development with which our programme aims to teach

students to critically engage. Th e Governance, Economics, and Development major brings together knowledge from multiple disciplines to train you to begin your own journey to understanding the origins, challenges in alleviating, and possible solutions to these challenges.

Capstone projectCrowning every student’s LUC career is the capstone project, a fi nal piece of independent research (thesis) in which you apply the subject knowledge, analytical and methodological skills, and academic disposition you will have acquired during your studies. All capstone projects are carefully supervised by research-active academic staff at LUC or Leiden University.

Ruba Nawaz second-year student

‘The program is designed to begin big and learn about global issues in a broad sense, while in the end you wind up specialising in one particular field, still leaving you with a wide variety of graduate programs to choose from. It makes you more curious, critical, but most importantly, it teaches you important, often underlying life secrets that unfold later in life. I love The Hague more than any city. The Hague is almost like a metaphor for what we study at LUC. The multiculturalism, the Peace Palace, ICC and other big institutions are all situated in the capital of Peace.’

10

Page 11: Liberal Arts Sciences Global Challenges Leiden University College the Hague

MinorsMinors are an important means by which our students add breadth and specialisation to their academic programme. You may complete a minor in one of three different ways.

Pre-structured minorsww Business & Entrepreneurshipww Psychologyww Gender Studiesww Journalismww Languages

Minor in a majorIn consultation with your tutor, you can select a combination of 30 EC of within one of LUC’s six majors.

Self-defined minorThis option requires a coherent set of cours-es within a defined theme. The selection of courses should be in consultation with your tutor.

Visiting Speakers Series

LUC brings speakers to The Hague from all around the world, be they officials from the UN or NATO, or leading intellectuals from the major universities. These visitors bring new insights and knowledge to our students, talking with them directly in extra-curricular seminars and events in the College.

Semester abroadLUC offers excellent students the exciting and challenging opportunity to gain experience of living and studying in another country as an integrated part of their academic programme. The credits obtained during the study abroad semester count towards the degree. In addition to participation in the university-wide schemes, LUC has its own unique exchange agreements with a selected group of universities and colleges.

Tutorial supportAcademic autonomy requires individualised attention and advice to ensure that your intellectual and personal development is well conceived and fruitful. LUC has a unique tutorial support system which pairs each student with a member of the academic staff for guidance throughout the three years of the student’s BA or BSc programme. Whether you are contemplating internships, summer schools, the LUC Semester Abroad Programme, or life after your LUC degree, your tutor is available to listen to ideas

and offer guidance, or act as a referee for applications where appropriate.

Welfare provisionAdjusting to university life and college culture can be quite a challenge. Besides your personal tutor, you also have access to welfare-specific support through the Student Life Officer, who offers in personal development guidance.

The first four are situated in The Hague, as is the EU’s criminal intelligence agency, Europol, and judicial co-operation agency, Eurojust. This has led to the city being dubbed the Legal Capital of the World.

Student Association FortunaFortuna ensures that you will get the most out of your time at LUC. Anna van Buerenplein Since August 2013, LUC The Hague has been located in its brand-new, custom-built premises at Anna van Buerenplein. Located next to The Hague Central Station and the Royal Library, an impressive building houses our vibrant student community and is a hotspot for various social activities, cultural events and student-related gatherings. It houses teaching facilities and provides accommodation for nearly 400 first- and second-year students. All students have rooms with private facilities and each floor has its own common room that enables them to study, discuss and work on group assignments or simply socialise. There is a range of facilities such as a grand café, an auditorium, lecture rooms and study areas, including quiet areas, to name just a few. Having the city centre of The Hague and a park of 10 hectares called Malieveld as its “backyard” makes the Anna van Buerenplein a vibrant home for students to study and live together. Sustainability is important to both LUC The Hague and the City of The Hague. It therefore plays an important part in the design of the new building. Sustainable materials of the highest standard have been used for the interior, expressing the importance of sustainability to all visitors and residents of the Anna van Buerenplein, from ground level to the top floor.
