A very warm welcome to Lewisham Music’ s 2019 Summer Gala at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall. Each year, we deliver and support great music-making throughout Lewisham, working with 6000 children and young people via a broad range of opportunities including tuition, ensembles, holiday activity, projects, and performances.

On this very special evening, you will hear from over 1200 children and young people who represent over one third of the borough’s schools. It’s a source of huge pride for us to be able to showcase their skill, joy and love of music making.

The Summer Gala features an exciting mix of groups performing a diverse range of musical styles and genres. This year it is also a particular pleasure to be able to share with you the world premiere performance of ‘Endurance’ with words by Hazel Gould and music by James Redwood. Specially commissioned for tonight’s concert, it tells the story of Lewisham resident Ernest Shackleton’s extraordinary expedition to the Antarctic in 1914. Many schools include the history of this remarkable adventure in their curriculum studies, and the music and words of ‘Endurance’ have brought our young people a new perspective on the themes of resilience, aspiration and courage. We are privileged to be joined by professional artists Abimaro Gunnell and Robert Hayward who will perform this moving and exhilarating work alongside our fantastic young people. The huge forces will be marshalled under the inspirational leadership of Clare Caddick, our Singing Leader.

Our young musicians have been working very hard to prepare their performances for you this evening. Please give them a warm reception and tell us what you thought about tonight’s performance via the link on the back page. Your feedback is vitally important to us.

It’s a particular sadness for me to be saying goodbye to you all at the end of this term. I am retiring from what has been an incredibly rewarding career in music and music education, including my 11 years with Lewisham Music and the former Music Service. I am delighted the current Head of Essex Music Service, Charly Richardson, will be succeeding me later in the summer and I wish him well. I know how much he is looking forward to getting to know Lewisham, its young people, and the parents, carers, teachers, tutors, artists, and partners who support their music making every day. And I don’t blame him! I know better than anyone what a privilege that is.

I have been fortunate to have such a committed and talented team of colleagues at Lewisham Music and I shall miss everyone very much indeed. However, I am certain that Lewisham Music will continue to ensure music-making in Lewisham thrives as a vibrant and inspirational force for all the borough’s residents, especially in the lives of our young people.

Have a great evening!

Peter Hayward (Chief Executive, Lewisham Music)

“THE ONLY TRUE FAILURE WOULD BE NOT TO EXPLORE AT ALL"

When we were first thinking about writing this piece, we wanted to find a connection with the history and community of Lewisham. Ernest Shackleton is both a local boy (having moved to Sydenham at 10 from Ireland) and famous across the world for his inspiring story of survival. On losing his boat to the antarctic ice, Shackleton’s dreams of crossing the continent were sunk, but rather than go down with the boat, he refused to give up and all 28 of the men on the crew came home alive. The story of Shackleton and his crew on The Endurance asks us to really think about what success is, and reminds us that, along the road to greatness, we will be faced with challenges and sometimes with disappointment. It is not our ability to avoid failure, but our ability to face the challenge and carry on, that is the real mark of strength and resilience.

It has been a great story to work with and create music and words for. The story is filled with fascinating characters, Shackleton himself who grows from a young boy, with a head too full of big ideas to concentrate in school, into the great explorer he became, Frank Wild his trusted second in command & Perce Blackborow the Stowaway. We have introduced a narrator character, who guides us through the story, questioning what it means to be a hero, and pokes fun at the idea that our heroes must be perfect and without flaws.

The chorus of young people play the crew, and the world who looked on from a distance, and who, more than 100 years later, are still enthralled by this incredible journey.
