Did you know that the Levy Senior Center Foundation has a scholarship exclusively for day trips? The Dennis Newton Scholarship Fund has the same guidelines as the Evanston Benefit Card, but is open to all Levy members. The scholarship will pay for 90% of the trip. For more information, stop by the front desk.

Monday, May 15 National Chocolate Chip Day Celebration! 1pmJoin us in the Levy Center lobby to explore different foods that include chocolate chips. In 1937, while working at the Toll House Inn, Ruth Graves Wakefield experimented by adding a little bit of chocolate to her cookies. The rest is history! Chocolate chips are now used in a variety of baking methods from sweet to savory.

Wednesday, May 17Introduction to Metal Smithing: 9:30–11:30amParticipants new to metal smithing will have the opportunity to experiment and develop foundational jewelry making skills. You’ll learn about design, layout, sawing, texturing, forming and polishing. Participants will complete two or three pieces of jewelry in this six-week session. Painting for the Stick-Figure Challenged: 6:30–8:30pmEnjoy an evening of painting on an 11"x14" canvas as local artist Val McCune guides you through the process. The image you will paint is on a flyer in the Levy Center lobby. This event could be a great mother/daughter outing. He is an award-winning pianist who brings an abundance of energy to his performances and enjoys sharing his passion of ragtime, stride, and jazz piano with an audience. Tuesday, May 9Levy Lecture Series: 9am–1pmAn Overview of Significant American Paintings: 1750 to Present will be presented by Roberta Katz, PhD, art historian, lecturer, School of Professional Studies at Northwestern University. Dr. Katz will discuss 25 key American artworks, helping viewers to look anew at classics such as Portrait of Paul Revere by John Singleton Copley and Sky Above Clouds IV by Georgia O’Keeffe. Using vivid color images, Dr. Katz will not only explain why these paintings are significant from an artistic standpoint, but also weave in the historical, political, social, and economic forces that influenced each artist. JuneShopping DayGreat News! The Levy Center will pilot a program with an additional shopping day every Tuesday, June 6 through August 1. The Levy bus will drop off and pick up patrons at the Evanston Plaza (Dempster/Dodge), which houses Valli Produce, Dollar Tree, restaurants and more. The bus route will begin at 11am and return to the plaza at 1:30pm to pick up shoppers. Don’t forget that Wednesdays are shopping days to Food 4 Less on Main St. and Jewel-Osco on Howard St.

Tuesday, June 13Levy Lecture Series, Stealing the Show: 1pmThis free lecture will be presented by Dr. Miriam Petty, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Radio-Television-Film at Northwestern University. Dr. Petty will discuss her first book, Stealing the Show: African American Performers and Audiences in 1930s Hollywood, exploring the complex relationships between black audiences and black performers in that era. Dr. Petty focuses on five performers whose careers flourished during this period and will show us how these actors were able to ultimately “steal the show.” In addition to showing film clips, Dr. Petty will discuss how their work is still relevant. Mobile Driver Services Unit: 10am–2pmSuper Senior Day is a convenient and voluntary program for driver’s license renewal, which includes Rules of the Road classroom instruction and a vision-screening exam. The Rules of the Road Review Course also includes a review of safe driving techniques and Illinois driving laws. A Secretary of State Mobile Driver Services Unit will be available for participants to renew their driver’s licenses. An identification card can be obtained for $20. However, if you are age 65 or older you may obtain a free, non-expiring State of Illinois photo ID card. Drivers age 75 and older are required to take a driving test to renew their driver’s licenses. Therefore, they must visit a Secretary of State Driver Services facility.

Throughout much of America, the church basement kitchen is often the heart and soul of any church. In the musical comedy, Church Basement Ladies, we meet the pastor, three cooks and one daughter who run the kitchen and care for the congregation.
