1 Evanston History Center Evanston, Illinois Oral History Collection Boxes 1-9 History The Evanston Historical Society began collecting oral history interviews in 1970, and tapes of interviews in 1987. In 1990 the Society reported 75 typescripts of interview and 13 tapes. In that year a professional Oral History Coordinator was hired, and a project launched to expand the collection. With support from the Charlie Murdaugh Foundation, the EHS Guild, and funds authorized by the EHS Board of Trustees, by 1992 the collection had grown to nearly 500 interviews, according to a grant proposal for a publication based on the collection. By that time, the EHS had received the transfer of 116 tapes from the Evanston Public Library. These were the result of an earlier project directed toward the Evanston African-American community by EPL. The interviews were conducted by an employee of the library, Wayne Watson, who made use of them for his dissertation; the oral history segment of the EPL project became dormant after he left the Library. Two projects consisting of interviews conducted by Evanston Township High School students in 1992 – the Caribbean Project and the Civil Rights Project – are represented by copies of tapes donated to the Evanston Historical Society. Interviews were also conducted from late 1993 to 1995, some of them specifically documenting the Evanston Jewish Community and the Swedish community (one) and World War II veterans. An Oral History Project with members of the Catholic Parishes of Evanston was conducted in 2011 and is found in Box 9. In 2010, the Evanston History Center undertook a small digitization effort to transfer the tapes to a more stable format. In 2015, EHC received a grant from the Illinois State Records Advisory Board (through funding from the National History the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), National Archives and Records Administration) to complete the digitization project. The taped interviews were transferred to MP3 files, for ease of access, and to WAV files for long-term preservation. All of the interviews are now accessible at the history center in these digital formats. Description of the Collection The collection consists of more than 430 cassette tapes most of which are accompanied by descriptions or summaries of the contents, more rarely by transcriptions. The folders containing these typed materials sometimes include clippings, biographies, and other materials pertaining to the person interviewed. There are lists of interviewees and interviewers, as well as a subject guide to the tapes recorded between 1990 and 1992. Subjects include schools, ethnic groups, immigration, women, World War II, race relations, African-American life and many others all pertaining to Evanston. For a full list of subjects, see the comprehensive subject list included after the container list below. Earlier interviews may consist only of typescripts. There are also drafts of grant applications, correspondence relating to the transfer of tapes from the Evanston Public Library, and papers based on interviews conducted by students involved in the Teen-Elder Project supported by the Murdaugh Foundation. Reports on or transcripts of other interviews may be included in EHS collections, especially Collection 209, African-Americans in Evanston. Oral History Collection Boxes 1-9 History The Evanston Historical Society began collecting oral history interviews in 1970, and tapes of interviews in 1987. In 1990 the Society reported 75 typescripts of interview and 13 tapes. In that year a professional Oral History Coordinator was hired, and a project launched to expand the collection.
