This is Laura Lee Rose. I am a business and efficiency coach. I help people who want to

take their professional development to the next level in the corporate environment and

others that want to take that big leap into entrepreneurship.

This presentation is specifically for other coaches and new entrepreneurs.

So – where to begin. Let’s review where you are today.

Is your social media connections assisting you in your professional and career goals and

directions?

Are you using your social media contacts smartly?

Are you connecting only with people you already know instead of the people that can help

you in your development?

We typically associate with folks of the same socio-economic circles.

Studies show that your salary and income are typically within 20% of the group of people

you regularly hang around with.

So, if you want to jump to a different salary or professional level, we may need to change

who we hang around with. If you want to leap to the next professional rung, we may want

to find ways to network with people of that next desired level. In other words, surround

ourselves with the success we want to achieve.

If you could wave your magic wand, what would you change?

So, what if you were given a systematic, easy to follow approach to your social media

dilemma?

Something that would integrate what you are already doing into a process that yields

measurable results?

need to modify who you hang around with. If you want to leap to the next professional

The issue is how do you gently and easily enter into a new level, new market, new client

base? If you haven’t been there before, how do you get there?

6

Page 8: Leveraging Links Links EBook.pdf · If actually used, LinkedIn, facebook and other social media apps can provide that bridge. Many of us have taken the step to create a linked in

What if you could better use your social media links with just some 10 minutes

concentrated focus, to break those perceived binds?

Some quick steps:

·Clarify what you want to accomplish. Is there a specific executive level, band, company, or

company size?

·Focus beyond your reach. If you want a larger salary, more responsibility, a different role –

you need to associate with the people you want to become (not just the people you work

with today).

·Finally – take the time to define your success criteria. How do you know when you have

hit your goal – if you don’t take the time to define it. How do you know you’ve succeeded

or when you are done?

Easiest step is to start exactly where you are. Take a look at your current connections. This

presentation focuses on LinkedIn.com steps, but they are transferrable to any other social

media network application. Reuse this steps everywhere.

Since you already have your search criteria, use the filter fields in your favorite social

network application.

If actually used, LinkedIn, facebook and other social media apps can provide that bridge.

Many of us have taken the step to create a linked in profile. We accept our friends and co-

workers LinkedIn requests. But we don’t do very much else. Many IT professionals admit

that they don’t spend any time on LinkedIn. At the same time, those same professional

complain that the feel stuck or trapped in their current position or situation.

LinkedIn search results look like the above. It will also list the number of contacts you

already have in common. All you need to do now, is contact one of your friends-in-

common and send your intro-template letter.

10

If you have multiple contacts, be selective in who you ask. Consider the amount of

influence and which friend will provide the larger impact.

At the bottom of the “potential contact” profile, you can select the “get introduced through

a connection”

12

Select the most influential friend from the list (the one you feel will have the largest impact

on the potential new contact).

If you find that your first-choice friend elects not to help (various reasons listed in the e-

Book “Leveraging Links”), you can always try another contact later.

Make sure you include a “Call to Action” to personalize your crafted email template. In my

accompany e-Book Leveraging Links, I include a sample email template and an actual email

to illustrate the template in action.

The nice thing about this strategy is that you hit 2 birds with one stone. You have updated

your friend with your current activities and what you would like help with; AND you have

build the foundation for a new connection.

Since you have a specific goal and level in mind for your new connection (when successful),

you will be building a relationship with the your next professional level.

15

In the e-Book “Leveraging Links”, I go into more detail of the typical responses that you

might get. If you can anticipate the probably responses, you can calmly take the next step.

For example: It’s hard to tell if someone is not responding. Don’t take it personally. Some

people don’t look at their LinkedIn account (or their social media mail) as frequently as

their regular work email. They may look at it over the weekend, etc.

You may get a response that your friend doesn’t really know this contact very well. They

may have crossed paths at a meeting and that’s about it. This is pretty common. But now

your friend better understands your interests and intentions. Ask your friend if they have

better connections with others that meet similar criteria. Ask them to connect you with

those people. Follow-up with a one-on-one meeting with your friend to explore other

connection opportunities.

Your intro-campaign has now resulted in a new connection. What do you do now?

Well, your goal is to build a positive relationship with this person. You want to help them

know, like and trust you (Business Rule #1).

Start a dialogue, suggest a meeting, lunch, phone call.

Review your new connection’s connection. Take a look at who they ‘hang-out with’. During

your more personal meeting, mention these possibilities of collaborating with them and

their contacts.

I also have an eBook that takes you step-by-step on how to conduct a one-on-one meeting

to increase your working relationship and close the deal. Contact

[email protected] on how to get a discount on this full set of coaching

development eBook series.

Finally, disengage from the results. You are sending out many requests. There are an

abundance of possible links and opportunities. Only a few has to actually materialize. It

will happen.

Just relax in the knowing that this will work. There are an abundance of connects. Just

keep plugging away.

Last important step is the Thank-You.

Thank the new connection. But take that extra step to thank your original connection; the

person that made all this possible. If you new contact results in new business, a new job, a

new market base – tell your friend the results; send them a token of appreciation;

reciprocate with your contacts; send business their way.

As I mentioned earlier, I have an e-book “Leveraging Links” that includes a Individual

Network Strategy Workbook. It provides a step-by-step approach on how to create your

business networking goals, the right people to network with, and customizing your success

criteria.

The book also contains some introductory letter templates and a Response and Next Step

Chart.
