Mrs. Bradford & Mrs. Bushman (K) - Kindergarten is doing a great job with our Reading Work Stations and Guided Reading groups! We are beginning to explore character traits in Animal Tales, as well as compare Non-fiction and Fiction texts.

Ms. Beer & Mrs. Stork (1st) - First grade is starting an author's study of one of our favorite authors, Mo Willems! We are also exploring author's message and learning how to give a book talk.

Mrs. Boecker & Mrs. Kellerstrass (2nd) - In honor of Black History month and President's Day, we will be reading about characters who had the courage to overcome obstacles. We will use the author's words, illustrations, and the character's behavior to determine traits of a courageous character.

Mrs. Davison & Mrs. Knox (3rd) - Third grade is working on identifying nonfiction and fiction text structures and is excited to start using book clubs.

Mrs. Bishop & Mrs. Zehr (4th) - In Reading workshop, the 4th graders will be working on finding the theme of a story vs. the main idea of a story. We will continue to explore words through the use of Greek and Latin roots

Mr. Finck & Mrs. Gingerich (5th) - Guided reading small groups, a read-aloud whole-class daily novel, Literature notebooks, Student-led Book Clubs, and multiple "Choice" independ ent reading options are all in place during 5th grade Reader's Workshop. We are read ing, reading, reading!

Mrs. Scholl & Mr. Weyland (6th) - Mr. Weyland's class just completed a Book Tasting of five Holocaust novels. This month we are diving into Historical Fiction novels and book clubs as we make connections to history and understand more about the past.

March 29th ~ 5 - 8 p.m. We need your help! Please sign up to volunteer.

We also need donations of cake/cookies (store bought preferred) and soda/large Gatorade.

You can sign up to volunteer at the carnival by filling out this form: Lettie Brown Carnival by February 28th. Please watch for more information on the carnival coming home with students soon!

If you have any questions, please contact Heidi Robbins at [email protected]. * Please see the PTO News section of this newsletter for more specifics.

Lettie Brown PTO News Thank you to all the families that attended our BINGO family fun night. We had over 200 people participate! Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Lettie Brown Pizza Ranch Night. We received $1094.80 in sales and tips! Wow! Thank you for your generosity! Thank you to our sixth grade teachers, parents and students for work-ing so hard! Our book fair will begin Feb. 25th and end at Open House on Thursday, Feb. 28th. Look for details about “Lunch with a Loved One” for opportunities to come have lunch with your child and shop the book fair. Save the date for our Carnival on March 29th, 5pm-8pm. We will need many volunteers to make the night a success. If you volunteer for one hour, you earn a FREE wristband (a $5 value)! We have many committee chair positions needing to be filled! Please contact Angel at [email protected] to volunteer or for questions.

The PTO would like to ask and encourage parents of children in the primary grades (K-3) to consider volunteering to fill our open chair positions. There is a vital need, as many of our current chairs will be heading to the junior high soon. These committees are well established with volunteers willing to mentor and share their information with the next generation of volunteers. Please contact Angel at [email protected] or 859-492-0354 to volunteer or for questions. Open chairs include: Carnival Basket Raffle, Spirit Wear, Yearbook Sales, Walka-thon, and PTO President. The PTO is a big support to the school, staff and students, and we need parent volunteers to carry out these chairs to keep it moving in the right direction. Thank you for your willingness to give your time and effort!
