16 Timbuktu Director: Abderrahmane Sissako (97 minutes) Kidane, a cale herder and his family, live peacefully not far from the Malian city of Timbuktu. In town the people suffer, powerless from the regime of terror imposed by the Jihadists who are determined to control their faith. Although Kidane and his family have been spared the chaos in Timbuktu their desny changes suddenly. Nominated for an Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film 2015. Presented in partnership with cIneIMAGINE. This Sundance Film Fesval award-winning film is based on Professor Robert Reich’s best-selling book, “Aſtershocks, The Next Economy and America’s Future”. It is a passionate argument on behalf of the middle class. Professor Reich uses humour and a wide array of facts to explain how globalizaon, technology, and deregulaon are the reasons for the economic inequality affecng each and every one of us. 17 Inequality for All Director: Jacob Kornbluth (90 minutes) Half Of A Yellow Sun, an Academy Award nominee for Best Actor, the film was previewed at both the BFI London Film Fesval and TIFF Toronto Film Fesval. This adaptaon of Chimamanda Ngozi Acichies’s novel is an extraordinary movie about two sisters who have returned home to Nigeria in 1960 aſter studying abroad. Their lives soon diverge in different paths as the beginnings of a civil war break out and both women join the fight to establish an independent republic. 18 Half Of A Yellow Sun Director: Biyi Bandele (111 minutes) This film exposes Canada’s secret trials and brilliantly captures the tragic stories of five Muslim men detained under the Canadian Government’s security cerficates, an immigraon process that allows the indefinite jailing of non-cizens without charge – unless they agree to be deported to countries where they face serious risk of torture. Amnesty Internaonal and hotDOCS awards. Panel discussion with Sophie Harkat from Oawa and Dr. Maureen Duffy from Calgary aſter the screening. 19 The Secret Trial 5 Director: Amar Wala (84 minutes) Buddhist monk, Lobsang Phuntsok, leaves his life as a spiritual leader in the U.S. and returns to the region of his birth where he creates a unique community in the foothills of the Himalayas. Lobsang has wrestled his own unhappy childhood into an opportunity for 85 orphaned and neglected children to become part of a loving and compassionate family. Within the community Tashi Dralma is especially vulnerable as she struggles with her saddest memories. 20 Tashi and the Monk Director: Andrew Hinton (75 minutes) Presented by LIFF in partnership with Lethbridge Public Library.
