P rinted below is an address delivered by Mrs. Gwyn Tebault (Hugh Tebault III’s grandmother) before the ElementaryScience Department of the California Teachers’ Association in 1925.

A Glimpse into the Historyof Humane Education

“The Latham Foundation for the Promotion of HumaneEducation was established in 1918. It was not until 1925,with the cooperation of school authorities, that a travelingteacher was placed in the schools by the Foundation. Adefinite plan of work was prepared which was to be carriedout in connection with regular school activities. Thisprogram, quite simple in its beginnings, has had a remark-able growth, both in scope and in territory.

“Reports received from teachers, supervisors and super-intendents, where the program has been functioning, showthat it has been a definite aid in character building and that ithas also helped to produce a better type of citizenship. Thesefavorable results have been obtained by the suggestion ofinteresting projects which help to give to boys and girls agreater knowledge and understanding as well as a wideappreciation of Nature in her many forms.

“The use of these practical projects in the classroomhas demonstrated very clearly that this subject “HumaneEducation,” which is such an aid in character building, is nota new subject to be added to an already overcrowdedcurriculum. It is rather a motivation, if we may be allowed touse that largely overworked word, or a purposeful activityfor almost every subject now included in the modern courseof study.

“Constant direction of a child’s thoughts towards life abouthim, whether animal or human, and to the conditions neces-sary for the existence of these lives cannot fail to make adeep impression on his consciousness. This will help todirect right habits towards his contacts and in time willaffect his character.

“Since children reached by this program for the promo-tion of humane education are so varied as to age, surround-ings, tastes and abilities, a wide range of approach is requiredin order to interest and to appeal to all.

“The intense interest aroused by the projects suggested,renders children peculiarly sensitive and observant ofNature in all forms. They are obliged to acquire muchfactual material in order to participate in these activities andthis information becomes a permanent part of their mentalequipment. A brief description of these projects follows,stating the relationship of each type to the general program.”

What followed was descriptions of the following types ofprojects:

• The Story Board (used with younger children)• Bibliographies (to be used with a Reading Table)• Scrap Books (of articles from daily papers, magazines,

discarded books, etc.)• Kind Deeds Clubs (for 3rd through 6th graders, with mem-

bership requirement to accomplish at least two kinddeeds - one towards a person and one towards an ani-mal. The pledge: “I will try to be kind to every livingcreature and to cultivate a spirit of protection to all whoare weaker than myself, and I will try to treat animalsas I would wish to be treated if I were in their place.”)

I just started working for Animals Asia Foundationat the end of last year, and I am looking for supportin spreading the word about two timely issues.

We have been working for many years to try toclose down the live animal markets in China, wheremillions of wildlife, endangered species, as well ascompanion animals such as dogs and cats arebrutally killed (many believe that torture makes theanimal taste better) each year. Due to the SARSoutbreak, several key off icials in the Chinesegovernment are now supporting our effort to shutdown these markets.

If you work with students and are looking for aneasy and powerful project, please encourage themto write letters to the China Wildlife ConservationAssociation, our wonderful Chinese partners in thiseffort. Thank the CWCA for its work on behalf ofwild animals in China and strongly encourage themto outlaw nationally the trade, sale, slaughter andconsumption of wild animals. Please also includedogs and cats in this letter, since they largely havebeen forgotten in the focus on the connection betweenSARS and wild animals. Additionally, if any of you teach about endang-ered species, I wanted to let you know aboutAAF’s heartwarming 10 minute video called‘China Bear Rescue: The Beginning.’ The film docu-ments the rescue and rehabilitation of the f irst 66Asiatic Black Bears (also known as Moon Bearsbecause of the beautiful moon-shaped crescent on

A Letter to Humane Educatorstheir chests) from bile farms in China, where theyare imprisoned for up to 20 years in cages no largerthan their own bodies. Since we began the rescue inOctober 2000, we have brought almost 100 bears tosanctuary at our Moon Bear Rescue Center in SichuanProvince, but there are still approximately 7,000 ofthese highly endangered bears in cages across thecountry.

Again, a wonderful way to encourage students toget involved in the rescue effort is to have them writeletters to the China Wildlife Conservation Associa-tion. It is due to this organization’s support andpartnership that we are able to carry out this rescueeffort. Please reinforce the fact that bear farming isno longer necessary and that China should close allfarms and work with Animals Asia to rescue all thebears by the 2008 Beijing Olympics. There are sampleletters re: closing the live animal markets and the bearfarms on our website: www.animalsasia.org.

LESSONS FROM THE WILD:How Animal-Human RelationshipsTeach Compassion for a Better World

n my workshops I ask students,“Who are the most influential

Ianimal mentors you have had?” Invari-ably they reply with emotional storiesfilled with wisdom, revealing a pivotalexperience in their lives. As humaneeducators, we know that animals hold aspecial place in the human heart. Whatwe are learning is that our relationshipswith animals, plants, and places is whatmakes us truly human.

This makes sense if you consider thathuman consciousness co-evolved withanimals, plants and our burgeoning senseof place in this living world. Our directexperiences with nature, especially withanimals gave us the cognitive abilitiesthat we use today.

As we reach out, with our sensesheightened to communicate withanimals, and when an animal reachesout to us, the place where we connect istruly remarkable. Something wonderfulhappens. We begin to feel ourselves openup. Through our relationships withanimals and nature, we experience ourtrue human nature.

Suzie BearLiving with wild animals at the Wild

Teachers Wildlife Sanctuary over thepast 23 years has taught me great lifelessons. As powerful as these predatorsare, with their ability to stalk and killtheir prey, they also have a tremendousability to share affection and love. Forthose who know how to listen, you willdiscover that they are real teachers. Mymost influential animal mentor was arather famous California Black Bearwho starred in the Wilderness Familymovie and the Grizzly Adams TV series.Being retired, she needed a home andshe came to live with us at WildlifeAssociates.

The late Suzie Bear taught me thedepth of love that one can share withanother living being; both of uscommunicating together with one heart,without the entanglement of humanlanguage. She taught me integrity andself-fortitude. There were times duringthe thirteen years we lived together whenshe would rise up on her hind feet, withher piercing black eyes and outstretchedpaws as she swaggered toward me, heropen mouth filled with the intimidatingsounds of an angry 330-pound bear. Thischallenged me physically, mentally andspiritually. She was testing my resolveto be with her as she was; not as a pet,not as a mindless subordinate creaturewaiting to do my bidding, but as anotherliving being with her own needs, wants,desires, rules and dignity.Ours was a partnership.Ours was a relationshipfull of love, arguments,growth and understand-ings. We would do thingsfor each other because weenjoyed being partners.

With all of her postur-ing and her potential toharm me, she never oncehurt me. In fact, Suzie Bearwould frequently lean herblack furry body againstmine while licking my face.At times, she would alsorest her huge paw acrossmy shoulders. For 13 years,she took me under her shel-tering arm and, in her way,protected me as a motherbear prepares her cub tolive out a life alone in thegreat wild. In return I gaveher comfort, love and a bestfriend with whom she

could trust, play with and explore na-ture. Together, we grew an amazingrelationship that built up the heart ofmy teaching.

Suzie died of cancer a few yearsback. She was lying on her side, hold-ing my hands together with her frontpaws, gazing calmly into my eyes, asif to proudly send me out into thegreat wild alone. Her lessons are apart of me forever, and they continueto help me bridge the two worlds,human and wild. Her lessons havemade me a deeper human being anda more effective and caring teacher.Thank you Suzie Bear – I miss youevery day of my life.

Communion with AnimalsMy one-year-old nephew Ethan

laughed uncontrollably after touchingthe nose of a horse for the first time,searching for eye contact, feeling joyand excitement running through hiswhole body from the connection withanother life. The quest for communionwith animals begins when we are babies,still too young to differentiate betweenspecies of living beings.

But what happens to us as we growup? Why do these wonderful senses, ourbirthright to experience, becomeatrophied in so many people? Theanswer may lie in the standards ofmodern society. As society shifts itsawareness away from nature, we beginto rely heavily on our mental abilities tomemorize lists, read lineal information,search the Internet, navigate the freeway,or work in a cubicle. Consequently, ourancient yet innate senses that trulyconnect us with nature are largelyignored. In today’s world, these marvel-ous senses are given little or no statusor attention. For many adults, natureand animals are but a backdrop to theglorious human drama, so it is nosurprise that there isn’t a major outcryas animals are abused, species areendangered and nature is being raped.In adults, the senses that connect us toanimals are still there, but hidingbeneath the norms of society. In youngchildren, these senses are naturallyawake and even encouraged (just thinkabout all the parents who want theirfive-year-olds to have the experience ofcaring for a pet.) These senses developin babies as their awareness expandsthrough the direct experiences they havewith nature. Everything they touch goesin their mouths to explore. They recordeach and every sensual experience as ifit were a delicious meal. Therefore, it isno surprise that children often voicetheir desire to protect animals.

Maintaining BalanceEcopsychology is a relatively new

science that points to the importance ofrelationships with non-human life. Thisis especially powerful for children.Ecopsychologists emphasize that theserelationships are what motivate humansto change personal behaviors andactions that will ultimately have a positiveeffect upon the environment. Considerthis: how can we learn the true mean-ing of biodiversity if we do not feel atrue connection to nature? If we feeldisconnected ourselves, how can we trulyunderstand the interconnectedness of alllife on our planet? To give us a truly fullperspective, our intellect must be kept inbalanced through our direct experiencesof the natural world around us.

In reality, however, most of us in theWestern world no longer live in the fieldsand forests of our ancestors, touching,tasting, feeling, observing animals and

discovering first-hand this adventurecalled life. We have becomespectators, living life throughtelevision dramas and animal soapoperas such as Animal Planet andDiscovery Channel programs or theInternet. Intellectual knowledge nowreplaces direct experience and therebecomes a major disconnect betweenour perceived world and the worldthat actually exists.

It is this huge chasm – the grow-ing f issure between people andanimals – that motivates me as ateacher. I work to close this gap,healing the separation that we havewith all of nature. For me, a success-ful educational program brings usback to our senses and awakens oursense of connection, relationship,compassion and place in this worldof living, sensual beings. What wasonce perceived as an “inanimate”

backdrop now becomes real and alive.Our worldview changes from beingalone as a species to one in which wehave relationships with all life. Thisperception begins the process of bring-ing us in balance with ourselves andwith the living earth that sustains us.

Renewing the Basicsof Relationships

Over the years I have watched alot of people interact with the animalsin their care, both wild and domestic. Ihave seen selfish slave relationships,dominant abusive relationships, toyrelationships, status relationships andso on. Even when we are out in naturewe often want wild animals to come tous, to love us, to pay attention to us. Sowe entice them with sounds, or if weare really ignorant, with food. Weactually bribe them to pay attention tous so we can have an experience withthem. Yet, as in any good relationship,it is not always about what we person-ally want, but what is best for both. Thiscan be accomplished by respectingother life and their own needs for space.

Through my years of teaching, Ihave realized that people first need torelearn the basics of how to “be” withan animal. Naturally, the key word hereis relationship. Teaching people how toform deep, bonding relationshipswith animals is an essential elementin human development. It is welldocumented that people who learnempathy for animals extend thatcompassion to all realms of their lives,including their fellow human beings.

As humans we project our ownbeliefs on animals, people and theworld around us. These beliefs, oftenhaving little to do with reality, can putourselves and animals in danger, fill uswith fear, or simply keep us in a stateof confusion. To form sound relation-ships with animals, we must break

through the huge barriers of humanprojection. Projections can mask ourability to see who is inside that cutelittle furry, feathered, or scaled head,clouding our ability to communicatewith animals and simply be withnature.

So Where Do We Go From Here?It is a big challenge for us as

educators to break through theseself-imposed barriers, yet we can startto approach this challenge by lookingat our own perceptions, our ownprojections and who we really are. Wecan start by being clear and honest withourselves, both as individuals andteachers. You may ask yourself “Howcan I teach about compassion for all lifeunless I seek out compassion in my ownlife?

During Wildlife Associates’ WildTeachers® school programs, we see thatAlexander the Great Horned Owl hasone wing, we hear the story of how hewas shot, and we feel compassion forthis awesome bird of prey. We begin tosee that owls are individual beings withdiffering personalities; they feel painand suffer the consequences of humanactivity. This educational approachleaves a lasting affect. Experiencingcompassion leads us on a unique

discovery of our interrelationships withall of life and, as we learn we begin tosee our vital connection, as humans, tothe natural systems that support life.

Using this educational approach,we find that our perceptions of animalschange from “inanimate objects” toindividual living, breathing beings withfeelings and awareness. Our worldviewopens up to see the living communi-ties of animals and nature, of which weare a part. When it is relayed that“Protecting Nature is ProtectingOurselvesTM” the audience can begin tounderstand the value of biodiversity.

As the animal mentors in our ownlives have taught us with livingcompassion, this is how we can teachothers. It is the positive joy of life thatmotivates children and renews ourresolve to focus on what is importantto us as adults in this life. If we guideour youth toward their naturaltendencies to explore their relation-ships with all of life, it will be naturalfor them to develop into human beingswho want to help others and to worktoward building healthy positiverelationships with animals and thenatural world.

At Wildlife Associates, we carefor non-releasable wildlife throughouttheir lives. These “Wild Teachers”travel with us into the schools wherewe teach some 500,000 students peryear across Northern California.Having live animals in front of thechildren creates a transformationaleducational experience. When donecorrectly – with respect, professional-ism, and a researched educationalmethodology – it is magical in itseffect. Human relationships withliving animals come to life. Our ethicsand values are informed, and thelessons boldly teach us that we, ashumans, have a vital connection to thenatural systems that support all life.

TEL AVIV, July 29- As a result of aJuly 8 conference co-sponsored byCHAI (Concern for Helping Animalsin Israel) and Israel’s Ministries ofHealth, Environment, and Agricul-ture, the Veterinary Services Divisionof the Ministry of Agriculture hasagreed to replace the slow, painfulstrychnine poisonings of animals withhumane animal capture and controlmeasures. This is the first time theVeterinary Services has joined forceswith an animal protection charity toimprove the treatment of animals.

Among other important initiativesto emerge from the conference, CHAIISRAEL will partner with Israel’sNature Reserves Authority (a govern-ment agency) to provide educationwithin the Bedouin community – asource of unvaccinated strays whowander into inhabited areas – and tospay/neuter and vaccinate their dogs.CHAI ISRAEL will bring its mobilespay/neuter clinic into the desert forthis effort, which will attack theproblem at its roots.

Israel is a rabies-endemic countryand humans have died from thedisease. Potentially rabid dogs,especially from Bedouin camps orfrom neighboring Arab regionswhere there is no rabies control,enter inhabited areas at night, inpacks, in search of food, makingcapture difficult and posing a threatto human health. For this reason,municipal veterinarians claimed thepoisonings were necessary to protectthe public.

Poisoned baits are put out bymunicipal officials. Animals eat thepoisoned food and die of asphyxia-

tion during convulsions over a periodup to 24 hours. An estimate by agovernment source puts the numberof strychnine pellets provided tomunicipal veterinarians annually at30,000-40,000, with two pellets perdog the usual dose. Companionanimals, as well as strays, suffer anddie from the cruel poison set out inbaits, which remain potent for years.Improperly disposed of doses, anddoses workers fail to pick up whenthey are left uneaten, cause slow,painful death to other animals. TheVeterinary Services has now agreedto ban the strychnine poisoningsaltogether, and to use the fast-acting,painless euthanasia drug used at U.S.animal shelters, following a success-ful trial. CHAI has worked since itsinception in 1984 to replace the masspoisonings with humane measures,including use of the humane oralrabies vaccine, the only methodproven successful in combating thisdeadly disease. The vaccine is nowbeing distributed throughout Israel,and funds have been provided by theEU to conduct a similar program inneighboring Arab regions. Govern-ment off icials are conf ident thatimproved cooperation betweengovernments in the region willlead to joint efforts to distributethe vaccine throughout the entire area.CHAI, which has sponsored manyeducational programs in Israel over its19-year history, is currently seekingfunds to provide education in the Arabcommunity within Israel.

Humane Education, Rural Domestic ViolenceFocus of “Link” Symposiums in Canada

FREDERICTON, New Brunswick –The links between animal abuseand family violence are bringingtogether the worlds of academiaand humane education in theMaritimes of eastern Canada.

Phil Arkow, chair of Latham’s Childand Animal Abuse Prevention Project,was the keynote speaker at twosymposiums organized by TheKindness Club, a humane and environ-mental education organization, and theMuriel McQueen Fergusson Centre forFamily Violence Research at theUniversity of New Brunswick.

The back-to-back symposiumsbrought together a diverse array ofprofessionals from animal welfare,human services, law enforcement andacademia. A newly created ActionCommittee is exploring issues relatingto family violence and animalabuse throughout the province ofNew Brunswick.

More than half of the province isrural, and Dr. Deborah Doherty, actingdirector of the Research Centre, haspresented groundbreaking researchabout the issues facing battered womenin rural communities. These issuesinclude rural women being heldhostage in abusive situations out offear for what will happen to their petsand livestock if they leave.

Doherty and Dr. Jennie Hornosty ofthe UNB Department of Sociologycollaborated on a report, “Respondingto Wife Abuse in Farm and RuralCommunities.”

“My husband said if I left he wouldkill the dog or let the calves die and itwould be my fault,” said one womaninterviewed for the report. “When hethreatened to kill me, I thought, whowould know - the farm is so isolated.”

Issues that exacerbate problems ofdomestic environment in rural areas in-clude: high rates of unemployment; sea-sonal work schedules; financial depen-dency on the batterer; geographic iso-lation; lack of access to jobs, social ser-vices, health care, affordable housingand transportation; widespread avail-ability of guns; lack of privacy; andmany animals.

“Since farm women are dedicated tothe survival of their farms and the pres-ervation of the animals, many stay toprotect what they cherish,” they wrote.

Solutions to rural domestic violenceinclude training service providers to notminimize women’s attachments to petsand farm animals, and to set up safehouses where women seeking sheltercan leave their animals until they canmake permanent arrangements.

A Tribute to Nathania GartmanNathania Did What She Came Here To Do By Michael Kaufmann, North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA)

he mosquitoes were buzzing aroundour heads as the late May desert sungradually rose over the red rockcanyon. Deep in conversation weslowly walked up the sandy paththrough the wild roses, scrub oak andevening primrose. Walking alreadywas difficult for Nathania, but sheintentionally chose to guide CathyRosenthal and myself up the steep hillto the underground lake in AngelCanyon at Best Friends AnimalSanctuary. Once at the entrance ofthe cave we paused and thenproceeded into the cool darkness towhere the clear, still water rested.

The evening before we hadcompleted a three-day workshoptitled “Getting your Message Out”,for a group of shelter-based humaneeducators, Best Friends Employeesand several college student interns.The purpose of the experiential work-shop was to help each participantdiscover his or her unique voice – tohone teaching and writing skills andconsider different approaches inhumane education outreach. Asalways much of the workshop tookplace in the animal areas of thesanctuary, as rabbits, dogs and horseswere included in the workshop asteachers in their own right.

Six weeks later, Nathania Gartmanpassed away on the morning ofAmerica’s Independence Day. Whattiming. I can almost hear her high-pitched laugh at this f inal bit ofmischief. How fitting. The NathaniaI knew was all about independence,

a determined woman who created anunusual life that was dedicated to ser-vice to others.

She appeared as an unassuming butpotent presence at national andregional conferences and was highlyrespected for her contributions, herknowledge of animal sanctuary workand her willingness to put forth theeffort necessary to complete challeng-ing projects for the AmericanAssociation of Professional HumaneEducators, the No-More HomelessPets Campaign and numerous otherprofessional efforts. Her voice wasthat of conviction tempered bypatience, reason and wit. She was a

master bridge builder between diverseindividuals with often opposingphilosophies, who in her presencediscovered similarities.

Nathania was one of the foundersof Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Forover thirty years she participated inthe building of a dream, of creating aplace where animals could live outtheir lives in peace. But that dreamwas much larger than to provide mereshelter for animals. Nathania’s visionalways encompassed human beings aswell, especially children and peoplewho were suffering in any way.Nothing could flare her tempermore than knowing that someonewas being treated unfairly or thatan injustice was being done. Thestory of Best Friends has been docu-mented in a recent book (available atwww.bestfriends.com) and not sur-prisingly one chapter was dedicatedto the humane education workNathania has been doing since thebeginning. At one station in her lifeshe was known as Daffydil the clown,reaching out to terminally ill childrenin oncology wards.

There was always a little mysteryabout Nathania, there is much abouther past that I will never know. Therewere veils, hinting at painful memo-ries, difficult times and challenges.Nathania chose to keep many parts ofherself to herself, yet this in no waymade her distant. She had a deep faithrooted in her southern heritage thatwas complemented by eager study of

hen volunteer Pam Gaber askedthe (Phoenix, AZ) Crisis Nursery ifshe could bring her ten month oldWeimeraner Gabriel to the Christmasparty, she had no idea how it wouldchange her life. With a red and greenholiday scarf draped around his neck,Gabriel was an instant hit with theresident children. All had experiencedmaltreatment or abandonment. Tooafraid to sit for aphoto with SantaClaus, five year oldNicky eagerly posedwith Gabriel. So dida string of otherabused children.Previously with-drawn boys andgirls at the CrisisNursery shed theirfears and gatheredaround the tailwagging pup tostroke his fur andrub his head. Direc-tor Natalie MilesThompson askedGaber to bringGabriel back on hernext visit. That waslate 1999 and Gaber had no idea whatshe was getting herself into.

Without a shred of experience inpet therapy, Gaber searched theinternet until she found the DeltaSociety, a non-profit organizationbased in Renton, Washington. TheDelta Society works to improvehuman health through service andtherapy dogs. Gaber quickly formeda relationship with the organization.A local canine behavior specialist andDelta Society volunteer certif ied

Word about Gabriel’s magic withabused children quickly spread. Otherfacilities soon called asking Gabriel tovisit. Realizing she couldn’t meet thegrowing demand, Gaber enlisted thehelp of friends with socialized dogsand a new group was born. Gaber’s denserved as office space.

To become an official (501)(3)(c)charity, Gaber followed a long andtedious process of filling out forms,forming a board of directors andopening a bank account. The groupstill needed a name. Gaber andhusband Mike batted around namesover dinner one evening. Because thechildren at the Crisis Nurseryresponded so enthusiastically toGabriel, Gaber suggested the dog’sname be included in the title. Bythe time they finished dessert, Mike

coined the group’s new name–Gabriel’s Angels.

An article in a local newspaperstirred interest from other dog own-ers. By the end of 2000, there were37certif ied therapy teams. Thegroup’s popularity expanded and bythe end of 2002 there were 85 teams.In just over two years Gabriel’sAngels visited 5,000 maltreated

and at-risk childrenin 37 facilities,including grouphomes and domes-tic violence shel-ters. Every weekGaber talks toprospective volun-teers and childwelfare agenciesseeking pet visits.Why the focuson maltreated andat risk children?Gaber said, “Break-ing the cycle ofviolence is keyto ending dom-estic violence andanimal abuse. Isaw children who

lacked empathy and had troubleforming attachments. Because dogslove us unconditionally, I wanted toteach compassion partnering withdogs.”

Domestic violence is common inthe United States. A 1999 study bythe Packard Foundation of Los Altos,CA estimated that between three andten million American childrenwitnessed violence at home everyyear. Children who witness domestic

violence or are maltreated often growup and become abusive towardsanimals. The Latham Foundationestimates that 89% of crimes againstanimals are committed by young boysand teens who experienced domesticviolence. Similarly, in 2001 theHumane Society of the United Statesdetermined an extremely highnumber of intentional cruelty cases(1,677) were committed by teenageboys under 18.

Gabriel’s Angels tries to disrupt thelink between animal cruelty and childabuse through pet therapy. “Gabrielhas a calming effect on children.Through his loving behavior, he helpschildren learn about trust and respect.That makes for kinder, gentlerchildren,” says Gaber .

Six-year old Amanda had noreason to trust. Child protectiveservices removed Amanda from herabusive mother and placed her in thesafety of the Crisis Nursery.

As Gaber brought Gabriel backweek after week, Amanda’s hardenedattitude slowly faded. One week sheran up to Gaber and said, “Gabrielreally comes back to see me. He likesme.” Normally shy and reserved,Amanda hugged and kissed the dogover and over. She never stoppedsmiling.

Gaber adds at least three to six newteams a month. “All new candidatesmust pass a background check. Theyare fingerprinted. Attendance at anorientation session is required. Andthey must like working with children.”Those who fail background checksand cannot provide three personalreferences are turned away.

All dog breeds are welcomed,Gaber says, as long as they are social-ized, friendly, leash trained andcomfortable around children. Ofcourse, all dogs must be current onvaccinations and properly groomed.

Currently Gabriel’s Angels includesBearded Collies, Rottweilers, GoldenRetrievers as well as a long list ofmixed breeds. “Every dog is tempera-ment checked. They are exposed toloud sounds, strangers touching theirfaces, and wheelchairs.” Dogs mustalso demonstrate basic obedienceskills and be under voice control.Aggressive dogs are rejected. TheDelta Society and Therapy DogInternational, another therapy doggroup, provide behavior testing andcertif ication. New volunteers areexpected to visit a facility at least oncea week for a minimum of 45 minutes.

Gabriel’s Angels volunteer LisaDepies visits a facility with her twoBearded Collies, Penny and Teazle.Depies rescued Teazle from anabusive family who had mistreated thedog.

With a lot of love and caring,Depies nursed Teazle back to health.Since animals always played a majorrole in Depies’ life, she joinedGabriel’s Angels to share her dogs’love and good nature.

“It’s rewarding to see rough andtumble boys showing kindness andcompassion to my dogs, especiallyTeazle. They know I saved her fromabuse and they can relate to that.”

Crisis Nursery director Thompsonsaid children at her facility experiencesome form of trauma, usually abuse.Canine therapists, she says, “Teachchildren about kindness and caring.The kids learn how to be gentle withthe dogs.” Compassion for animals,she adds, doesn’t come easy forabused children who may be roughwith animals. “These kids have beenabused themselves. At first some arerough with the dogs. But they learnthat hitting causes pain and they startloving the dogs.” Some of the dogs,she says, have a way of reaching outto withdrawn children. “That helps

children adjust. Many are frightened.Being removed from their homescauses them further trauma. The dogsgive our children something special.”Partnering with animals, especiallydogs, to break the cycle of violence isa growing trend in the US, saysGinger Prevas, manager of the FirstStrike program with the HumaneSociety of the United States. Othergroups such as the Chenney Troupein Chicago and the Humane Societyof Sonoma County, Prevas said, useanimals as therapy with children whoexperienced dysfunction and/orviolence at home. “Abused childrenoften lack stable relationships anddogs can help them build trust,”Prevas said. “That also helps boosttheir self-confidence, which many ofthem have very little of.”

Since its inception just three yearsago, Gabriel’s Angels has earned asolid reputation for the special workthey do. “As long as there are abusedchildren, Gabriel’s Angels will bethere,” Gaber says as she plans for thefuture. Sadly, child abuse casescontinue to pour into protective ser-vices. The canine therapists ofGabriel’s Angels will keep playing aspecial role in the hearts of Arizona’smaltreated children.

diverse theology. Her connection to a vibrant and lived faith was at the core of who she was. It was this non-judgmentaland subtle spirituality that empowered Nathania and gave her the wisdom and connection to something real that she wasable to transmit to others.

Nathania loved animals - not in some fluffy, gooey way. She respected animals as individuals who have a destiny alltheir own. In her eyes a dog should be allowed to live like a dog. While she firmly believed in the depth of relationshipthat people and animals can establish, to her this bond relied on mutual respect and of letting the animals have theirspace. The human side of the relationship had to be in balance with that of the animal. In her accepting eyes, both peopleand animals were perfect in their imperfection.

Only minutes before Cathy and I were to leave Best Friends to head back to “the real world” Nathania stopped her carand slowly walked us over to an impressive red rock pillar, so unique to the Utah desert landscape. On the side of asandstone ledge, about twelve feet up in the air were several faint handprints and designs, the legacy of native peoplewho traveled through the canyon many thousands of years ago. We paused, spoke briefly of mundane things and thenparted for the last time.

What is the legacy of an individual? For a while we may live on in the thoughts of those who knew us. But evenmemories, like petroglyphs in rock will erode and vanish eventually.

But for a few short moments in time a woman named Nathania Gartman walked in Angel Canyon. She breathed theair and watched the Golden Eagle fly to the sun. Her tears drenched the soil and her songs echoed on the canyon walls.She knew that people could be small, that life could be hard and that it wasn’t meant to be easy. But more than anythingNathania intuitively felt her connection to the goodness in the universe and found her destiny as a teacher, mentor andfriend. She did what she came here to do.

AKC Museum of the DogCelebrates Man’s Best Friend

ST. LOUIS, MO. – When you thinkof St. Louis, several animals maycome to mind: cardinals and rams.And of course there’s CheckerboardSquare, where an awful lot of dog andcat chow is born. But the outskirts ofthis river city contain a unique gemfor dog fanciers. Since 1987 the570-acre former Jarville estate, aGreek Revival country manor built in1853, has been home to the Ameri-can Kennel Club’s Museum of theDog.

The museum houses the world’smost extensive collection of artdevoted to dogs, with over 500 oils,watercolors, prints, posters, sketches,and bronze and porcelain sculptureson display.

The artworks date back to a 1603oil of a mastiff hunting a lion, thoughthere are portraits of pointers from1750, bulldogs from 1796 and salukisfrom 1807. The newer paintingsinclude the Bush family pet, Millie,on the South Lawn of the WhiteHouse.

“Dogs have enriched our civiliza-tion, and woven themselves into ourhearts and families through the ages.They all return the love they are giventenfold,” wrote Barbara Bush for themuseum’s grand opening.
