Biblical Commentary

InvestigationSome of the most extensive of Jesus’ teaching took place during the movement from the upper room in Jerusalem to theGarden of Gethsemane, outside the walls of Jerusalem. Jesus had just shared the Last Supper with His disciples, and now Hewanted to give them some last-minute instruction before His resurrection.

The disciples were uncertain as to what was about to happen (concerning the impending crucifixion), although they musthave sensed the concern in Jesus’ tone and in his face. Jesus knew that He could not overwhelm His disciples with too muchinformation at this time. They had no experience with which to contextualize what Jesus was referring to. They had heardHim speak of the Holy Spirit before, but now Jesus was identifying to them what the Spirit’s role would be in their lives.

Jesus wanted His disciples to have the peace and assurance that came with the realization that this was not the end, but onlythe beginning. They would not be alone without His presence, and the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, and Counselor would see tothis. They would recognize the Holy Spirit’s presence with them because He would not be unlike Jesus in character andpractice. In fact, He would reveal the things to them that Jesus had revealed to them, which came to Him from the Father.

Now, Jesus would share with His disciples how the Spirit would act as Teacher in their lives. Again, they would know theSpirit because they would recognize the teaching. It would be the same as what Jesus had taught them during the time Hehad walked and talked with them on the earth. But now they would have His presence living within them, and they wouldknow His voice.

ImportanceThis passage teaches that The Holy Spirit is God and Empowerer. The Holy Spirit is supernatural and sovereign. He is thevery essence of God and reveals the nature, character, and glory of God.

God’s glory has to do with the revealing of Himself. As the Teacher who would lead Jesus’ followers “into all truth” (John16:13), the Spirit would reveal to them who God is. This is God’s glory—the very revelation of Himself. It cannot be sharedbecause it displays who He is. Thus, the disciples would recognize the teaching of the Spirit because it would be exclusive tothe revelation of God—something that only God could reveal. It would not be unlike what Jesus had taught them but wouldremain consistent with His teaching because He too was part of the triune God, revealing Himself by means of His own glory.

This passage also teaches the Essential Truth that God is.

Reverb StudyLesson: Guide to Life

InterpretationJohn 16:12–13 A wise teacher does not overwhelm his students with too much information. There is a point of diminishingreturns when so much information is not an asset but a detriment. Jesus knew and revealed that there was so much more thatthe disciples would need to know—but not then. There were many other things the disciples would need to know, but thecoming Holy Spirit would be the one who would “guide” Jesus’ disciples into this “truth.”

In earlier passages in John, the Holy Spirit (Counselor) was pictured as a defender and convicter of sins. Now, Jesus said thatthe Holy Spirit would reveal the same truths about God that He had revealed. The Holy Spirit would not give new revelationthat conflicted with what Jesus taught—since the source of what both the Holy Spirit and Jesus taught was from God theFather. The Source would be the same. The message would be the same.

The Holy Spirit would reveal things yet to come. The Holy Spirit would prepare God’s people for the new things that theywould face in the future. This preparation would not be based on the Holy Spirit’s own authority but would be based on theauthority of God.

John 16:14–15 The Holy Spirit is not an independent source of power. The Holy Spirit would glorify Jesus by expounding onwhat Jesus had taught just as Jesus had glorified the Father by expounding on Him. The Holy Spirit would take what theFather had given to the Son and further explain its meaning to the disciples, preparing them to take that message to theworld. The Holy Spirit would work in the disciples’ lives so that they could perceive, understand, and teach about the Savior.Once Jesus departed from the world, there would be no break in communication and relationship with God—the Holy Spiritwould guide the disciples toward God just as Jesus had done.

It was not the Holy Spirit’s function to attract attention to Himself or to promote Himself. Much as what John the Baptist haddone earlier in the New Testament when he prepared the way for Jesus, the Holy Spirit’s purpose was to make Jesus increasein prominence.

Jesus taught His disciples that the Holy Spirit would have a threefold ministry when He came. He would convict the world ofsin (vv. 8–11), guide the disciples in their daily walk with God (vv. 12–13), and glorify (reveal) Jesus (vv. 14–15).

ImplicationsThis entire study has revealed to us that it is virtually impossible to live in relationship with Jesus Christ without the presenceof the Holy Spirit. The sending of the Spirit was not a contingency plan, but the plan of God.

The question then is this: Why do we make so little of the role of the Holy Spirit in our churches? In this time of the NewTestament Church, why isn’t there a clearer understanding of the role of the Holy Spirit and how to live in relationship withHim? How do you sense and know the Holy Spirit’s presence in your life, and how do you respond to His presence?

What do your students know about the Holy Spirit, and what can be done to emphasize His role in their lives? How will youuse these lessons to build into the lives of students the necessity of the Holy Spirit that Jesus stressed in the lives of Hisdisciples? First, you must realize that they cannot live without Him.

Teaching Plan: Connect ActivitiesAll activity sheets are at the end of this printable lesson

Review Questions: The Confidence of Certainty(5–8 minutes, easy set-up)Download the “Review Questions” activity sheet. Print one copy for your own use.

After greeting students, use the review questions to test what they can recall from the previous lesson as well as to providecontext for today’s lesson.

Drama: Mediators(5–10 minutes, easy set-up)Download the drama script. Prior to the session, enlist two students to enact the drama. Give copies of the script to castmembers ahead of time so that they will be ready to perform it.

Prompt students to perform the drama. Afterward, say: Imagine trying to go through your life on your own, trying tofind out what’s true and what’s not, trying to determine what’s right and wrong, trying to live life all by yourself.

Ask: How would that feel? Allow students to respond. Then conclude the activity by saying: The truth is that we don’thave to live this life on our own. We have someone who will guide us into all truth and teach us what is right andwrong. He is the Holy Spirit.

Media: The Spirit of Truth(3–5 minutes, Reverb Media Pass required)If your church has purchased the Reverb Media Pass or the Reverb DVD, preview and arrange to show the “The Spirit ofTruth” video. (If your church has not purchased the Reverb Media Pass, you can purchase this single video through the“Media” tab.)

Play the video for your students. Then, ask: Has your opinion of the Holy Spirit changed over the last few weeks? What have you learned about the Spirit that you didn’t know when we started this study? (Allow students to answer.)Then, say: The Holy Spirit plays many roles in our lives. If you were to try and sum these roles up in a simplephrase, it might be this: The Holy Spirit serves as our guide. Today we will take one final look at the Spirit andHis role as a guide.

Especially for Younger Students: As Easy as a Flip of the Coin(10 minutes, easy set-up)Download the “Coin Toss” activity sheet. Print one copy for your own use. Also provide a quarter and tape.

Clear a large space in your room for the purpose of allowing students to spread out. Explain that one side of the room is theside on which to start and the opposite side is the side on which to finish. Instruct students to form a lateral line in the middleof the room. Explain to them that the object of the game is to see who can make it to the “Finish” area before everyone else.Tell students that you will flip a coin. Before each flip, students must choose heads or tails. Students who choose heads mustput both hands on their heads. After the flip of the coin, students who guessed correctly must take one step forward towardsthe “Finish.” Students who guessed incorrectly must take one step backward towards the “Start.” The first student to reachthe “Finish” area wins.

Play the game until a winner has emerged. Afterward, ask: What if every decision we made in life was made as theresult of a coin toss? Say: Fortunately, life isn’t like that and God doesn’t even expect us to make decisions on ourown. Today we’ll focus on the role of the Holy Spirit as our ultimate guide.

Especially for Older Students: One or the Other(10 minutes, easy set-up)

Designate two students to be doorkeepers. Speak to them silently before the game begins. Tell one of the doorkeepers thathe or she is always to speak the truth, then tell the other doorkeeper that his or her purpose is to never speak the truth whenasked questions by students. Place both doorkeepers at the front of the room beside two imaginary doors, one to guard a “fun”door and the other to guard a “detention” door.

Next, prompt everyone else to look at the two students you’ve enlisted. Say: These students are standing beside twoimaginary doors. One leads to a Friday night football game and fun with friends. The other leads to a yearlongstay in detention. But you don’t know which door is which, so you must interview the two doorkeepers, askingthem questions that will help you decide which door you want to walk through. The only catch is this—only onedoorkeeper speaks the truth. The other doorkeeper always lies. Maybe by the time you’ve finished your interview, you will know the truth and avoid a year of detention and extra homework. Let the questions begin!

Encourage students to ask such questions as: “Does your door lead to fun or detention?” “How would you describe in threewords what’s behind your door?” “Why would we want to choose your door?”Students must take turns asking questions. After a couple of minutes, call an end to the questioning and tell students that they must decide which door they will walkthrough. After they have chosen, turn to the doorkeepers and ask them to reveal their roles and which door they are guiding.

Ask: Why do choices have to be so difficult? Wouldn’t it just be easier to know the truth? Allow students to respond. Then conclude the activity by explaining that today we will see how Jesus made a way for us to know truth and know the rightdecisions to make.

Key Study: Glory Reveals Truth(15–20 minutes, moderate set-up)Download the Student Worksheet. Print a copy for each student. Also provide pens, tables, bread, cups, and grape juice.

Place bread, grape juice, and cups on tables along with pens and copies of the Student Worksheet. Invite students to sitaround the tables and enjoy some of the bread and grape juice.

Ask students to imagine themselves in the upper room with Jesus and His disciples on the night of His Last Supper. Remindstudents that the conversation that Jesus had with His disciples during John 14–16 happened on the way from the upper roomto the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus would be arrested. Ask: If you were there and Jesus began to speak of goingaway, what would you want to know from Him? What questions would you ask Him? Allow students to respond.(Possible Answers: “Where are you going?” “When are you coming back?” “What are we supposed to do now?” “Whereshould we go?” “Who will lead us?” “Is this it?” “Is there no more hope?”) Lead students to open their Bibles to John 16:12–15.Read the passage aloud. Then explain to students that Jesus shared many things with His disciples that night in order toprepare them for what was to come. Say: Some things Jesus chose not to share at that time because He knew that itwas too much for them to begin to understand.

Direct students to look at the three words written on their worksheets. Prompt them to discuss at their table what thesethree words might have in common. After a minute or two, call on students to share their thoughts. Then encourage studentsto take a few notes as you share the following points:

God’s glory is the revelation of Himself. When we see God’s glory, we see God identify who He is in His character, His●

personality, and His ability. It is awesome, and it reveals Him, not us. So we can’t share it, but we can magnify, or glorify,Him and allow Him to be revealed through us. God makes Himself known to us by means of His glory. He reveals Himself to us. ●

Everything that God reveals about Himself is truth. There is nothing about God that is a lie. That is a characteristic of Satan,●

not God.

Explain to students that Jesus wanted His disciples to know that after He was gone, the Holy Spirit, His Spirit, would comeand reveal the truth concerning God. This is His glory. Ask students to look at John 16:14. Then say: Based on yourunderstanding of these three words, how would you paraphrase this verse? Instruct students to write theirparaphrase on their worksheet. (“Possible answer: The Holy Spirit will reveal who I am by making the truth about me knownto you.”)

Use this opportunity to point out to students the Essential Truth God is, explaining that by His Spirit, God desires that weknow Him, and because He is a relational God, He has made it possible for us to know Him. Say: He has chosen to do this.He didn’t have to.

Finally, ask: Since you now know that the Holy Spirit’s role is to reveal Christ in all of His glory to us, how will thishelp whenever we face uncertain times, as the disciples did? Give students a moment to consider the question, then askthem to respond. Lead students to understand that it will help them to trust Him even when they don’t understand what’shappening or what’s about to happen. Also lead them to understand that it will help them to know that they can turn to Himfor instruction and guidance. Last, lead students to understand that it will help them know that they’re not alone and thatthey can’t depend on themselves for the answers, but rather the Spirit who lives within them.

Especially for Younger Students: Major “Aha!” Moments(10 minutes, easy set-up)Download the “Major ‘Aha’ Moments” activity sheet. Print a copy for each student. Also provide pens.

Distribute pens and copies of the “Major ‘Aha!’ Moments” activity sheet to students. Ask: How many of you can remembertimes when you were sitting in class, at home doing homework, or having a discussion with a teacher or parentwhen something clicked and you finally understood what that person was talking about? Lead students to take a fewmoments and describe the situation on their activity sheets. After a few moments, allow students to share their “Aha!”

moments.

Next, ask a student to read John 16:12–15. Remind students that the disciples probably had no clue as to what Jesus wastalking about when He spoke of the Holy Spirit and what He would do and perform in and through their lives. Then ask twostudents to read Acts 2:14–24 and 2:36-41. Explain that Peter had been among the “clueless” disciples before Jesus’resurrection, but now, just before these verses, Scripture records that the promised Holy Spirit had come and that Peter waspreaching an amazing sermon that essentially said, “Now, I get it!” Say: The Spirit had led Him to know, understand, and now proclaim the truth of Jesus Christ to the multitudes attending the Feast of Pentecost in Jerusalem. Askstudents to choose one verse in the Acts passage that indicated that He understood who Jesus was. Prompt students to writethat verse out on their activity sheets.

Especially for Older Students: The Promise Fulfilled(10 minutes, easy set-up)Provide a dry erase board and dry erase marker.

Call on a student to read John16:12–15. Then remind students that this took place in Jerusalem and in the upper room thenight before Jesus’ crucifixion. Ask another student to read Acts 1:4. Explain that this took place after the resurrection.Explain further that Jesus was known to have spent about 40 days with His disciples after His resurrection. Finally, askanother student to read Acts 2:1–24. On the dry erase board, write the following:

place:●

time:●

What happened?●

What promises were fulfilled?●

How could this be proven?●

Share with students that Jesus was intent that the disciples remember what He had said concerning the coming of the HolySpirit. Also share that He wanted them to remain together in Jerusalem until that day came. Help students provide answersto each of the criterion that you placed on the board. (Answers: It occurred in Jerusalem during The Feast of Pentecost. Aviolent wind filled the house where the disciples were. The sign of the Holy Spirit appeared as tongues of fire that rested oneach of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit. The promise of the coming of the Holy Spirit was fulfilled. The promise ofthe Holy Spirit guiding them into truth and revealing God was fulfilled. This was proven by the disciples being able to speakin other tongues and testifying about Jesus to the foreign people visiting Jerusalem. Peter preached the truth concerningChrist and was empowered and emboldened by the Holy Spirit.)

Teaching Plan: Transform ActivitiesAll activity sheets are at the end of this printable lesson

Deeper Discussion(5–7 minutes, easy set-up)

Lead students into a discussion about how they are to interact with the Holy Spirit when they face uncertain times. Allowthem to express their concerns and frustrations, as they deal with the following prompts:

How does the Holy Spirit speak, and how can we know when He is speaking to us? Help students know that every●

time they open the Scriptures, they are giving the Spirit the opportunity to begin to speak to them.If the Holy Spirit reveals truth, what is that truth, and how does it apply to us? Help students understand that the●

Spirit will help them discern what is right and wrong, when they need to move forward or run away from a circumstance, and when something is true and when it is a lie. What assurances do we have that when the going gets tough, the Holy Spirit will be there to guide us? Remind●

students that in John 15:4 and 15:7, Jesus told His disciples to “remain” in Him, and He would remain in them. We need towalk close to the Lord, and then we will recognize when He is speaking to us and what He is saying. How do we know if the Spirit is living and active in our lives? Help students understand that if they have placed their●

faith in Jesus Christ, inviting Him to be the Lord/Leader of their lives, He has sent us His Spirit to live in our lives, and webelong to Him.

Especially for Younger Students: What They Might Have Asked(10 minutes, easy set-up)Hang a long piece of butcher paper on the wall to be used as a graffiti wall. Also provide markers.

Lead students to imagine that they are among the disciples walking with Jesus to the Garden of Gethsemane. Prompt them toimagine that He has just told them about the coming of the Holy Spirit and what the Spirit will do (as He did in John16:12–15.) Tell students that you can imagine that the disciples had many questions and concerns forming in their heads, butthey probably didn’t know what to ask. Say: Remember that at this point they did not know even what you know today. In other words, even though Jesus had told them that He must die and then be raised from the dead, they had not witnessedHim doing this yet. With all of this in mind, lead students to begin to ask the questions and express the concerns that thedisciples might have wanted to ask and share with Jesus that night. (Examples: “What will the Spirit tell us about what is tocome?” “What will the Spirit reveal to us about who God is?” “What will the Spirit teach me that I don’t already know?”“What will He empower me to do?”) As students formulate questions and concerns, ask them to come to the front and grab amarker and go to the graffiti wall and write their questions on the butcher paper.

After everyone has had a chance to respond by writing their questions/concerns on the wall, take a few moments to readsome of the questions and concerns. If some questions can be answered, take just a moment and do so, but don’t try toanswer what only the Holy Spirit can answer. Be sure and provide students with the assurance that once they have expressedtheir faith in Christ, inviting Him to be their Savior, the Holy Spirit will live with them and in them forever. Be sensitive tothose who have not made this step in their lives. They will struggle to understand this activity. Take a few minutes and gatheryour students around the wall to pray, asking for the Holy Spirit to begin answering all of these questions and concerns inthe lives of students.

Especially for Older Students: Guide Into All Truth(10 minutes, moderate set-up)Download the “Guide Into All Truth” activity sheet. Print a copy for each group of students. Cut out the strips along theperforated lines. Place the strips into baskets. Also provide pens.

Place the baskets of strips in different locations in the room. Lead students to divide into groups of three or four people each, then assign each group to a random basket. Direct each student to take one of the strips in the basket and complete thesentence-long prayer by expressing a question, concern, doubt, or uncertainty that they have and write it on the strip. Thenask students to fold up their strips and place them back in the baskets. Next, take the baskets and mix them up among thedifferent groups. Instruct students to take the strips in the baskets and pray for the person who wrote on the strip (withoutidentifying that person aloud). Prayers can either be offered openly in the group or silently by each student. Be sensitive tostudents who may not have yet made a commitment to Jesus Christ by confessing Him as their Savior. Be prepared to answerany questions concerning the role of the Holy Spirit.

Creative Prayer(5 minutes, easy set-up)Provide a candle and matches.

Share with students that on that night in the upper room in Jerusalem, Jesus used two elements out of the Passover Feast tocall on His followers to remember Him: the bread and the cup. Explain that this was so His disciples would never forget whatHe was about to do for them on the cross. But remind students that there is one other way that we are brought toremembrance of Jesus Christ. That is through His Holy Spirit, who teaches us and reveals to us who God is in the Father, theSon, and the Holy Spirit.

If possible, darken the room, light a candle, and ask students to gather around the candle. Lead students to speaksentence-long prayers by beginning with: “Holy Spirit, teach us to . . .” “Holy Spirit, assure us in . . .” “Holy Spirit, guide usby . . .” “Holy Spirit, reveal to us . . .”

Characters:ERICSARA

Props: a sock puppet that resembles SARA anda sock puppet that resembles ERIC

Costumes: ERIC and SARA can be dressed ineveryday street clothes.

Creative Note: Really work on giving the sockpuppets a distinct personality. Sock puppetsshould be decorated to look as similar to ERICand SARA as is humanly possible with a sockpuppet. Whenever they speak, they do so throughtheir puppets. It doesn't matter if the actorsplaying ERIC and SARA are actual ventriloquists. They should just make it obvious that when theyspeak it's actually their sock puppets we'rehearing.

(ERIC and SARA enter from opposite sides of thestage. They each have a sock puppet on one

hand.)

ERIC: Hey, Sara.

SARA: Hey, Eric. How's it going?

ERIC: Good, good. You?

SARA: Oh, great. Just out enjoying thisbeautiful day.

ERIC: It is nice, isn't it?

SARA: Sure is.

ERIC: Well, what brings you to thisparticular spot?

SARA: Oh, I like to come here to watchthe sailboats on the lake.

ERIC: Really? Me too.

SARA: How cool!

(Eric indicates the area upstage.)

ERIC: Won't you join me?

SARA: I'd love to.

(ERIC and SARA now turn upstage and faceaway from the audience. However, they leavetheir arms with their socks behind their backs.

The conversation now shifts so that it is actuallythe sock puppets talking to each other rather than

ERIC and SARA talking through their puppets.ERIC and SARA continue providing the voices,

but the actors act as if they are watchingsomething in the distance, paying no mind to their

socks or what the socks are saying.)

ERIC'S SOCK: Psst! Psst! Hey. Hey, you.

SARA'S SOCK: Me?

ERIC'S SOCK: Yeah, you. Come a little closer.

(SARA'S SOCK moves a little closer. ERIC'SSOCK does the same.)

SARA'S SOCK: What is it?

ERIC'S SOCK: Can you believe how lame thesetwo are? I mean, watchingsailboats? Give me a break!

SARA'S SOCK: Shh! They're going to hear you.

ERIC'S SOCK: Are you kidding me? Look atthem. Completely oblivious.

SARA'S SOCK: We shouldn't be talking like this.

ERIC'S SOCK: Why not?

SARA'S SOCK: Because . . . you know . . . wecan't just go around sayingwhatever we want.

ERIC'S SOCK: Why not?

SARA'S SOCK: Well, we're puppets and thatmeans we say what they want usto.

ERIC'S SOCK: Yeah. But don't you ever want tojust say whatever you want . . .

ERIC’S SOCK: . . . or yell when they want you towhisper or just change one littleword here or there?

SARA'S SOCK: (shocked) No. Never. Why wouldI want to do that?

ERIC'S SOCK: Just because.

SARA'S SOCK: But then I would becommunicating clearly for her.

ERIC'S SOCK: So. Let her worry about it herself

SARA'S SOCK: Oh, I could never do that.

ERIC'S SOCK: Why not?

SARA'S SOCK: It's just not what I'm meant to do,you know. It's just not me.

ERIC'S SOCK: That doesn't mean it couldn't be.

SARA'S SOCK: Sure it does. I am who I am. I'mnot anyone else.

ERIC'S SOCK: Huh?

SARA'S SOCK: Listen, I think we should just goback to . . .

(Suddenly ERIC and SARA turn back towardeach other. They each lift up their socks and

resume talking through them.)

ERIC: Wasn't that nice?

SARA: It sure was.

ERIC: I'm glad we ran into each other.

SARA: Me too.

ERIC: Maybe we could do this againsometime.

SARA: That'd be great.

ERIC: Cool. Well, I’d better be going.

SARA: Yeah. Me too.

ERIC: Okay. I'll see you later.

SARA: Sounds good. Bye.

(ERIC and SARA start to leave. ERIC'S SOCK,however, wants to have one last word.)

ERIC'S SOCK: Lame!

(ERIC stops and stares, appalled at his sock.SARA stops and turns toward ERIC.)

SARA: Excuse me?

ERIC'S SOCK: I didn't say anything.

SARA: Oh, okay. Bye.

ERIC'S SOCK: Bye.

(SARA exits. Finally, ERIC does as well, butERIC'S SOCK is laughing as he does.)
