A SUPERHERO’s CITY 2D Project: Deep Space
Perspective techniques to develop the illusion of depth http://www.digitalwish.com/dw/digitalwish/view_lesson_plans?id=2524
Keywords: illusion, perspective, art, technology, digital, Photoshop Subject(s): Photography, Technology, Art, and Science Grades: 9-12 Goal: Part one: Learn, practice, and create a one-point perspective drawing of a city with a (high camera angle) bird’s eye view camera angle and possible 3D effect of shading.
Part two: Create a personal superhero to fly over your city. Learning color blending. Part three: students will create an animated gif/ stop-motion clip (movie) on Photoshop, using photos of the city drawing as a movie background. Objectives:
• Students will learn and practice drawing techniques: vertical line, horizontal line, zig-zag line, curves, dagger line, circles, spheres and shading (hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling)
Warm-ups – 1st … 7 to10 mins of class • Students will learn, practice, and create/ draw one point & two point
perspective using geometric shapes, creating a drawing of a city. • Students will learn to draw a super hero; face and body. Then create their
our superhero. • The students will learn color blending for their superheroes. • Students will use both drawings, city & superhero to create an animated gif/
stop-motion movie. • Students will learn the basics of using a camera and camera stand/ monopod
(like a tripod but only one leg). Procedure: PART 1 – Superhero’s View of a City (1pt perspective/ bird’s eye view)
1. Warm-ups – the first start of drawing techniques will be introduced. a. Students will learn and practice drawing techniques: vertical line,
horizontal line, zig-zag line, curves, dagger line, circles, spheres and shading (hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling)
Warm-ups – 1st … 7 to10 mins of class 2. Students will be introduced to: shapes vs form (2D vs 3D)
a. Students will practice to draw basic shapes and move into drawing forms; Then, stretching the forms (to help with fantasy images).
3. Students will be introduced to: perspective – 1 point & 2 point (horizon line & vanishing point)
a. Students will practice in their sketchbooks perspective. First together coping from the white board. Then researching on a browser, like google, examples of one pt perspective to emulate in their sketchbook. Also, researching and drawing 2 pt perspective in their sketchbook.
4. Students will be introduced to their project, “Superhero’s City”. a. Internet Research and pointing out an awareness of different cities
i. New york, Las Vegas, LA, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Abu Dhabi, Dubai (the city of gold)
b. Worksheet as a reference with 5 stages of How to draw a Bird’s Eye View of City
Stage 1: Starting with geometric shapes that represent buildings in their Superhero City (need 15 to 20 buildings at the end of the project)
Stage 2: Create a vanishing point, draw guide line/ construction lines from the geo shape’s corners to the vanishing point.
Stage 3: Draw the bottom of the building, that is parallel to the top of the building (geo shape)
Stage 4: Erase the vanishing point and part of the guide lines that are under the buildings.
Stage 5: Add details to the top of the buildings To go to a higher grade level of 4 / 5, the student needs to add
shading to the image and make it 3D. To go to the highest level, the student uses color for the shading.
5. Student will fill out the rubric, and hand it in with the CITY drawing for a grade.
a. Graded on: following directions, creativity, craftsmanship, composition, and effort
b. 25 points PART 2 - Superhero
6. While waiting for a grade (for the city) the student will do research online and drawings in their sketchbook for an inspiration for their own superhero.
7. Demo on coloring and color blending of their superhero.
8. Students will create a superhero and turn in for a grade.
a. Graded on: following directions, creativity, craftsmanship, composition, and effort
b. 10 points
PART 3 – The Movie / The Animated GIF in PS
9. Show examples of store bought flipbooks to show the concept of an Animated GIF
10. Teacher Demo on photographing for stop-motion/ animated gifs a. How to use the:
i. Camera ii. Camera stand iii. Uploading photos from the camera to the computer in a folder
a. Students will photograph their city and superhero to show movement.
11. Teacher Demo on Animating a GIF – the Dancing Elephant
b. Drag photo into Photoshop c. Selection tools d. Layers e. Hiding layers f. Frames and change timing g. Save as a GIF (Save for WEB) h. Play the movie ONLINE / Browser
12. Begin the Animated GIF – Superhero City – in Photoshop with a:
i. Teacher Demo on Photoshop i. Drag photos into Photoshop ii. Resize the photos (smaller) iii. Adjust the lighting on the photos
13. Once done in PS, the student will save for html/ the web as a GIF 14. Student will hand-in to MS Z’s usb dr/flash dr – for
j. a film festival k. and a grade
i. Graded on: following directions, creativity, craftsmanship, composition, and effort
ii. 10 points
iii. file needs to be named/ saved as: a. CITY_ student’s name_ p1.gif
Cross-Curriculum Ideas This is a great opportunity to work with the math and science departments on Fibonacci's numbers, or the Golden Ratio, which applies to geometry, pure math, and nature. Famous artists, engineers, and architects also use it in many of their works, such as Leonardo Da Vinci ( from the video).
