Goal-directed Instructional Design Plan-Anne of Green Gables
Author - Pamela Murphy
A problem or a need The students need to be able to make a connection
between their life and what they read. This is important in order for students to makemeaning while they are reading. The students often lack the ability to make connections
with the literature and generalize the new knowledge into a new application.
A real-world performanceR.CM.08.01
Connect personal knowledge, experiences, and understanding of the world to
themes and perspectives in text through oral and written responses. This objective
is hard for some students to learn because they have limited life experiences. This lesson
will be introduced by front loading them with experience to the content. The reading that
will be used is the First chapter of Anne of Green Gables. This book was published in 1909
and depicts 1878 and a small town Avonlea.
An instructional objective
A. Students will take part in a 10 minute quickfire they will Google Anne Shirley
B. Students will then get into groups of 3 and make a mind map of who was Anne Shirley.
Students will use the mind mapping toolhttps :// bubbl.us /
C. Students will watch the first 5 minutes of the first PBS movie Anne of Green Gables.
Make a two column list of how Annes life is like theirs and how it is different,
D.Students will Read/listen to the first chapter and respond/reflect by completing a Jing
with
pictures that they took of their own life and how it relates to Anne Shirleys life
E. Students will read additional literature and be able to generalize their new skills.
A set of essential content
R.CM.08.01
Connect personal knowledge, experiences, and understanding of the world to themes and
perspectives in text through oral and written responses.
A. Students will learn ways to look at literature and compare it to their own life. They will
also learn to generalize this new skill into other applications
An evaluation consisting of a test or observation
A. Students will create a Jing using 5 pictures taken by them to compare and
contrast their life to the book.
B. In order to see what the students have learned and if they can generalized
what they have learned students will read a passage from Willie Wonka and the
Chocolate Factory and complete a quickfire challenge to relate it to their life in the
course of this period.
A method to help participants learn

1. Students will compete a Google search they have all done this many times and it
is a way to have them use something they know and use it for something new.
2.Students will take the information that the have y learned in the Quick Fire and create
a mind map usinghttps://bubbl.us/ we will watch a you tube video on how to
use bubbl us first http :// www .youtube .com/ watch ? v =6 TP 62 aNlVu
3. Students with low reading levels will be able to use mp3 players with thefirst chapter of the story downloaded so that they can listen and read at the
same time.
4. Consistent feed back with every step of the project will be given.
5. Students will watch a How to make a jing presentation on you tube
before beginning the project.

Mind Motivation:
Meaningfulness The new tools the students get to use will bemeaningful and because their life is being compared and contrasted tothe book it becomes personal.
Pleasant consequences To have students understand there are more reasons
to read and understanding text. The only reason that reading is relevant is how it
relevant to the person doing the reading.
Novelty Getting the students to combine new and old knowledge. And using two
new and different tools Jing and Bubbl.us
Socialization The unit will have group work, individual work, and sharing. This
will allow for the students to take part in a way they feel comfortable with.
Audience- Age 8Th grade students
Skill level-I had these same students last year so they have been exposed to
numerous computer applications and tools however; both Jing and Bubbl.us are
new to them.
Prerequisite knowledge -Students have had this same objective in the seventh
grade. The eighth grade objective does go on to a more advanced level of
understanding.
