INTERPRETING A CARTOON MASTER CLASS

You will need to create a Master class video which tells pupils all they need to know about interpreting a Historical Cartoon.

You will need to create a power point (to go with your presentation) which needs to have at least one cartoon on it and you

need to analyse the cartoon on the video so viewers can see your advice in action

You will need to decide in the group who will perform (or how many will perform)

who will film etc.

THE OTHER PEACE TREATIESThe Treaty of Versailles only dealt with Germany, but the victors also

needed to decide what was going to happen to Germany’s allies.

They did this in a number of other peace treaties which sometimes are forgotten about

Your task is to complete the following table in your exercise books using pages 16 and 17 of the text books or Johndclare.net

Name of the Treaty

The year it was signed

The country it punished

The territory it took away

The nation it gave the territory to

3 (a) What were Lloyd George’s aims at Versailles? (4)

You simply need to list four aims

1. He wanted Germany punished (and had promised the British public he would do this) but not too harshly as he didn’t want Germany to seek revenge in the future

2. He wanted Germany’s colonies to strengthen the British empire and reduce the power of one of the fastest growing empires in Europe

3. He disagreed with Wilson’s idea of Freedom of the seas as this would threaten the security of the British Empire which required the British Navy to keep tight control of the seas.

4. he wanted to resume a trading partnership with Germany because Germany was Britain’s second largest trading partner before the war

(b) Explain why Clemenceau wanted the Treaty of Versailles to punish Germany (6)(One explained reason 3-4 marks; two or more

explained reasons 4-6 marks.)

Point 1.France had suffered more than any other nation during the war because most of the land battles took place on French soil. The nature of trench warfare caused a very high death count and none more so than to the French army, with 2/3 of French soldiers being killed or injured. As a result the French public were desperate to gain revenge on Germany who they held responsible for all the damage and destruction France suffered during the war

Point2.France and Germany had long been military rivals, with Germany invading France on two separate occasions within 45 years; first in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War in which Germany instilled a painful military defeat on France and led to Germany annexing the French region of Alsace-Lorraine. France felt Germany aggressively became involved in European disputes in order to expand their influence in western Europe which led to the outbreak of WWI. Clemenceau who had lived therough both attacks on France knew that the French public saw the T of V as the perfect opportunity to remove Germany as a threat to France once and for all.

c) The following were all equally important to why Germany was dissatisfied with the Treaty of Versailles:

(i) The reduction in armed forces(ii) The loss of territory(iii) The imposing of war guilt and reparations

How far do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer with reference only to (i), (ii), (iii) (10)

Description of reasons for dissatisfaction (2-4 marks) one mark for each

Explanation of one of the reasons (4-6)

Explanation of two or three reasons (6-9)

Explanation of three reasons with evaluation of ‘equally important’ (9-10)

Page 9: Lesson 4 ppt

Explain each of the punishments in detail – exactly what they were

(you have to get details in to show the examiner you have revised!) Then explain in detail how each of the punishments would

affect Germany (don’t just say it would upset them!)(this is to show that you are able to think logically and have the understanding to make an informed conclusion)

Then conclude which one had the greatest consequences for Germany and why you think that one was the greatest consequence

(this where you are the historian and make judegments based on facts and your own evaluation)
