What is an enterprise application?• Essentially, an enterprise application is the term used to

describe applications -- or software -- that a business would use to assist the organization in solving enterprise problems.

• An enterprise Application is “In-House”, contrary to a commonly used retail application purchased on an individual basis

• When the word "enterprise" is combined with "application," it usually refers to a software platform that is too large and too complex for individual or small business use.

What is an enterprise application?• Enterprise applications are typically designed to interface

or integrate with other enterprise applications used within the organization

• Also to be deployed across a variety of networks while meeting strict requirements for security and administration management.

• Other common names for enterprise application include:

– Enterprise app– Enterprise software – Enterprise application software (EAS)

Application Service Providers• Enterprise applications are usually designed and deployed

in-house by a specialized IT development team within the organization.

• However, an enterprise may outsource some or all of the development of the application, and bring it back in-house for deployment creating a type of hybrid system

• Today, using enterprise application service providers (ASP) is more prevalent.

• Here, the enterprise application is designed by a third-party application service provider and leased to the enterprise, as an on-premise or hosted service.

• This is also often referred to software-as-a-service (SaaS) or Web-based applications.

Custom application service providers• Another version of an Enterprise Application with Service

Providers is, a common application used by many businesses but has the ability to become custom for each company

• An example of this is Remedy Ticketing Tool• Remedy is a ticketing software similar to Spiceworks

however the company is designed to allow for custom builds, logos, etc. used by companies

• Many application developer companies are moving towards this trend as it gets them contracts with the larger enterprises which means a steady and large flow of money for their company

Cloud computing• Another trend in enterprise applications is the move to

cloud computing• This is where the enterprise moves some or its entire

infrastructure to the cloud which is a type of Internet-based computing, where services are delivered to an organization's computers and devices through the Internet as an on-demand service.

• Some enterprises may also choose a hybrid solution where cloud applications are integrated with on-premise systems.

• Some other companies may also build their own cloud environment within their internal network

Examples• Some of the more common types of enterprise applications

include the following:• automated billing systems• payment processing• email marketing systems• content management• call center and customer support• Customer Relationship Management (CRM)• Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)• Business Intelligence• Business Continuity Planning (BCP)• HR Management• Enterprise Application Integration (EAI)• enterprise search• messaging and collaboration systems.

What you can expect• As a support analyst in an enterprise service desk you will be

trained on how to support Enterprise Applications• You may also receive training on how to use some products, or

the basics of using them• There may be a Knowledge Base (KB) as well to help guide you

through support of these tools• Some important items to keep in mind:– The error codes will be useful when escalating your

ticket to the Nth team so be sure to grab them or a screenshot of them is best. Attach to your ticket

– You will be trained on how to use these applications so don’t be overwhelmed by the learning curve you will run into. They don’t expect you to know everything, just to know how to look for the answer
