Introduction

WelcometoLessDoing,MoreLiving!I’mAriMeisel.Beforewebegin,I’dliketogiveyoualittlebackgroundonmeandonmy“LessDoing”philosophy.

I’vebeenanentrepreneurformostofmylife.Istartedmyfirstcompanyattheageoftwelve,doingwebsitedesign.BythetimeIstartedcollege,Ihadalsostartedafewothertechcompaniesand,aftercollege,Istartedworkinginconstruction.

WhenIvisitedafriendinupstateNewYork,IgottheideaofcreatingaloftdistrictinBinghamton.Ispentthenextthreeyearsworkinginconstruction.Ibuiltthelofts,abar,andafewotherspaces.ThenIreturnedtoNewYorkCity,whereIstartedspecializingingreenbuildingmaterials.I’veinventedtwogreenbuildingmaterials,writtenabookongreenbuildingmaterials,andspentmostofthelasteightyearsbuildingandconsulting.

In2006,IwasdiagnosedwithCrohn’sdisease,averypainfulandincurableinflammatorydiseaseofthedigestivetract.Mycasewassevere.Iwasinandoutofthehospital,andIwastakingsixteenpillsaday.Inearlydied.

Afterreachingapersonallowpointinthehospital,Idecidedtodoeverythinginmypowertostrengthenmybody,whichbythenwasveryweak.Throughacombinationofyoga,nutrition,naturalsupplements,andrigorousexerciselikeIronmanandCrossFit,IwasabletofightbackthesymptomsofCrohn’suntilIwasfinallyabletosuspendmymedication.Eventually,Iwasdeclaredfreeofalltracesofthe“incurable”disease,andIcompletedIronmanFranceinJune2011inthirteenhoursandforty-fiveminutes.

IhavesincespokenatseminarsandataregionalTEDTalkaboutmystruggleagainstaseeminglyinsurmountableopponent.WhatIdiscoveredisthatnutritionandfitnessarenotthewholestory.Evenwiththosethingsundercontrol,stresswasstillabigpartofmyillness.It’sa

bigpartofmanyotherautoimmuneillnessesandinflammatoryconditions,too,nottomentionlifeingeneral.SobeforeIcouldcompletelysolvemyproblem,Ineededawaytoaddressstress.

Theideaofanexternalbraincomesfrommyexperiences.Inhighschool,Iwasgettinganewbusinessideaeveryweek.Manywereterrible,butIwaswritingthemalldowninamarblenotebook.Ihadtonsofideas,andI’mprettysureIinventedafewthingsduringthattime.
