Les racines de l’avenir • Foundations for tomorrow 2014 Valedictorian Address The following is an excerpt from Taylor Nimchonk and Matthieu Boulet’s Valedictorian address: Welcome everyone to College Jeanne-Sauvé’s 2014 convocation! We, the class of 2014, are honoured to have our parents, family, friends, teachers and invited guests here with us to celebrate this special day. We are about to begin the final stretch of our high school journey… I can’t believe we’re finally here! I’m not sure if I’m excited, nervous or simply in awe. I can’t describe how much anticipation has lead us to where we stand today. You know Taylor, to commemorate this moment in time, I can’t find something more fitting than to take a selfie. Smile! We want to congratulate our 131 graduates as they move on after four suc- cessful years at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé. It is with great pride that we con- gratulate and celebrate this year’s graduates. They are a great group of young people who will surely go on to be successful and make us all proud here at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé. Félicitations à nos gradués de 2013-2014! After thirty years of service as a Teacher Aide in the School Divi- sion and at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé, Mme Marielle Brennan has reti- red and will be greatly missed. We wish Mme Brennan all the best as she enjoys her well-deserved retirement. We want to wish Mme Marina Charrière all the best as she moves on to new adventures. We want to thank her for the many years of service at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé as a Student Services Teacher. Bonne chance Marina, nous allons tous te manquer! We also want to wish M. Éric Plourde as he moves on to a new teaching position closer to home. Éric has been a valued member of the Collège Jeanne-Sauvé staff for many years and his experi- ence teaching Chemistry and Science will be missed. Bonne chance Éric, nous allons tous te manquer et nous te souhaitons du succès à ta nouvelle école. We also want to wish Mme Sylvia Bazin all the best as she will be going to Univer- sity full time in September. Bonne chance Sylvia et peut -être qu’on te reverra comme enseignante un jour! We would like to thank Mme Kelly Guetre who has been an EA at CJS the past year and we wish her the best as she moves on. Mer- ci et bonne chance Kelly! Finally, we would like to thank M. Guy North who has been a member of our teaching staff this past school year. We wish him all the best in his teaching career. Merci Guy et bonne chance! We would also like to welcome Mme Marie-Ève Sabourin to Collège Jeanne-Sauvé. Mme Sabourin is presently a teacher at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé but will be joining us full time. Félicitation Marie- Ève! We would also like to welcome M. Mario Desmarais who will be teaching Mathématiques and Social Studies next year. Finally, M. Ruest and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful, restful and safe summer holiday! Merci!

Welcome everyone to College Jeanne-Sauvé’s 2014 convocation!

Smile!

We want to congratulate our 131 graduates as they move on after four suc-cessful years at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé. It is with great pride that we con-

gratulate and celebrate this year’s graduates. They are a great group of young people who will surely go on to be successful and make us all proud here at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé. Félicitations à nos gradués de 2013-2014!

After thirty years of service as a Teacher Aide in the School Divi-sion and at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé, Mme Marielle Brennan has reti-red and will be greatly missed.

Éric has been a valued member of the Collège Jeanne-Sauvé staff for many years and his experi-ence teaching Chemistry and Science will be missed. Bonne chance Éric, nous allons tous te manquer et nous te souhaitons du succès à ta nouvelle école.

We also want to wish Mme Sylvia Bazin all the best as she will be going to Univer-sity full time in September. Bonne chance Sylvia et peut-être qu’on te reverra comme enseignante un jour!

We would like to thank Mme Kelly Guetre who has been an EA at CJS the past year and we wish her the best as she moves on. Mer-ci et bonne chance Kelly!

La soirée des arts 2014 On June 12th, over 250 people celebrated Collège Jeanne-Sauvé’s arts program and the accomplishments of students in the Arts. On display, a year’s worth of photography, visual arts, theatre and music…a true feast for the eyes and ears. Congratu-lations to all the worthy award winners and please continue to amaze us with your artistic passions.

Dragon Boats 2014

On Sunday June 8th, 3 awesome CJS Dragon Boat teams came together to participate in the annual Manitoba High School Dragon Boats Challenge. Against an intrepid fleet of 48 crews from all over the province, the CJS Grade 12 mixed team, having posted one of the fastest times of the day, finished 2nd overall, a mere fraction of a second from gold. Our Grade 11 boat raced really well in the C final. The female team put forth a competitive performance in the high school women’s category. We hope that next year, you will throw on your CJS blue, tie up the bandanna, and we’ll make waves!!

See you in September Wednesday, September 3rd will be the first official day of classes and picture day! Collège Jeanne-Sauvé plans to welcome students to registration sessions on the morning of Wednesday, September 3rd. The purpose of the morning registration sessions will be to provide students with the opportunity to receive important documents (timetable, school agenda, calendar of activities, etc.), pay any outstanding fees, and have their photos taken. The morning registration sessions are compulsory.

Students will also be given the opportunity to meet with teachers, support staff, and administration on Wednesday, September 3rd at a school spon-sored lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Classes on Wednesday, September 3rd will run in the afternoon only (please refer to the following schedule).

Grade 9 students wrapped up the semester with assignments re-lated to colour and the Grade 10 students studied the effects of lighting as seen in Impressionism. Grade 11 students completed a 3D project: a glazed ceramic pot or a plaster mask and the Grade 12 students completed their “pièce de résistance” in the art pro-gram –a painted ceiling tile on which the themes were varied and chosen from personal interest (see pics). I’d like to wish my Grade 12 students all the best as they make their way into the world. It was a pleasure working with each of you.

For students taking Art next year, an art kit will be available to purchase at wholesale price at the beginning of each semester ($40.00 for the 2014-2015 year, payable to CJS) which will also include a vinyl black bag. For those who purchased a kit already, some items may need to be replenished /replaced for the upcom-ing year. You can find these items at Artist’s Emporium or Michael’s. Materials students are expected to bring to class:

Sketchbook (Strathmore, 9x12, 50 sheets) Drawing pencil set (ex: HB, 3B, 5B, 6B) White vinyl eraser Grey kneaded eraser Colored pencil crayons #4 blending stomp Small tortillon Sanding block 30 cm ruler Fine-tip black marker and Sharpie 1 black and 1 white charcoal pencils 5 paintbrushes (various sizes)

Tips to Ease Back to School Anxiety What parents can do to alleviate back to school jitters Back-to-school anxiety is normal and understandable. Many kids may feel anxious about going back to school after a long summer break. Others may feel nervous about starting a new school for the first time. Whichever the case may be, parents can help ease the transition to back to school with these simple strategies:

Organize your home for back to school. Help your child feel more comfortable about his / her new

school environment.

Make a couple of drives back and forth from home to school. Go over the basics. Remind them that he’s/she's not the only one who may be

nervous. Try to be home more during back to school time.

Make sure he/she gets enough sleep and eats a balanced diet.

Keep an eye on his/her school anxiety.

Continue providing positive encouragement.

Festival Théâtre Jeunesse

This past May, Collège Jeanne-Sauvé took part in the annual Festi-val théâtre jeunesse organized through the Cercle Molière. This participation resulted in various awards and honourable mentions.

At the Junior High level, under the direction of Mme Desmarais, twelve Grade 9 students (Shayla Banville, Natalie Desmarais, Allee Hembroff, Ethan Courchene, Rachel Sparrow, Becca Stoik, Nolan Branconnier-Wilson, Neda Masoomifar, Haley Ness, Dyna Sanderson and Aimee Pauls) put together a romantic comedy enti-tled L'âge de l'amour, for which they received silver in the "Popular Vote" category, as well as an honourable mention for "Best Production". Ethan Courchène received gold for his role as leading male character "Philippe". Rachel Sparrow received silver

for her role as leading female character “Beatrice”. Neda Masoomifar earned herself a silver medal as best supporting ac-tress in her role as "Alphonse".

At the Senior High level, under the direction of M. Habeck, the Drama class performed Y passer par quatre chemins, which left its audience reflecting upon choices to be made in life. This play earned an honourable mention for "Best Production". Also, Julie Thiessen received gold as best supporting actress as well as a bursary to the Université de Saint-Boniface. Isabella Welch earned an honourable mention for best leading actress.

Congratulations to ALL participants for your hard work, dedication and team work. Bravo!

From the Spanish Department First of all, ‘felicidades’ to Señora Freynet’s Grade 10 class (Bloc D) who won ‘La ronda de las cifras’ this semester with a total of 355 points. The Grade 12 class finished in second place with 340 points.

Speaking of Señora Freynet, as many people reading this will know, she spent four weeks in St. Boniface Hospital from mid-May to mid-June. We are very happy to report that she has made a rapid recovery in the last couple of weeks and will be back with us ‘mejor que nunca’ (better than ever!) in September. She sends along a ‘muchas gracias’ to doña Marcela who took over her class while she was away.

In May our seven ‘viajeras’ returned from their three month ex-change in Spain. It has been absolutely thrilling for the Spanish teachers to hear them speaking so fluently. ‘Felicidades’ to Sherise Cook, Erin Dahl, Stéphanie Desmarais, Alejandra Horky, Rebecca Howgate, Marissa Huggins and Sydney Lindblom.

Grade 10 students who would like to par-ticipate in the same exchange during the 2015-2016 school year should speak to ‘don Carlos’ (Mr. Kroeker). And here’s another travel oppor-tunity: plans for a 2016 trip to Costa Rica are in their pre-liminary stages. Interested students should be on the lookout for more news in the fall. Finally, it might interest you to know that CJS has by far the largest high school Spanish programme in the province. Doña Marcela, Señora Freynet and don Carlos are very happy to work with so many bright and motivated students each year.

Grad ’15 Fundraising

Our Grade 12 graduates will be raising money this September by selling the Show & Save Card and Coupon Book.

The Coupon Book has over $10,000 in money saving offers including coupons for purchases at various grocery stores, restaurants and

businesses throughout the city. For only $15 you can experience endless savings with the Re-usable Card and Coupon Book.

By purchasing your Show & Save from us, you will be supporting the graduates while at the same time saving your family a lot of money.

Host an International Student Program The International Student Program is accepting homestay family application forms. Throughout the school year there is a need for families willing to host both male and female students. In preparation for the upcom-ing September 2014 semester, there is a higher demand for families willing to host male students. However, all homestay family applicants are welcome.

If you are considering hosting and international student and would like more information, please call the Homestay Coordinator, Evelyn Sieben. Please reach her at 204-223-0674 to discuss further details. You can also send your questions or application request by email to [email protected] to see how this program could fit with your family.

Amis de Rachel Les Amis de Rachel have had a very busy year doing random acts of kindness and humanitarian work, which include; volunteering at Siloam Mission, fundraisers for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Cancer Care Manitoba. Our fundraiser for cancer, also known as Kendra’s Walk, was a success. We were able to raise money by selling tickets for the walk and Tshirts which supported the cause. It was nice to have the support of the students and staff in this school tradition. We wish everyone a safe and relaxing summer! See you in September!

Banquet sportif On June 12th we celebrated the year of sport at CJS with our annu-al Athlete Luncheon. This year we had 256 individual athletes who participated in a variety of sports. In keeping with the Olympiens theme we awarded certificates for Bronze, Silver and Gold depend-ing on a student’s participation in extra-curricular sport at CJS. Bronze level athletes participated in a minimum of 2 sports, Silver level athletes participated in a minimum of 3 sports and our Gold level athletes participated in a minimum of 4 sports. We awarded 63 students with a Bronze level certificate, 27 students with a Sil-ver level certificate and 14 students with a Gold level certificate. Congratulations to all our award winners.

We would like to thank our volunteer coaches who have spent many hours working with our students to help them become true student-athletes. Also, thank you to the students and parents of Collège Jeanne-Sauvé for their support throughout the year.

Les ÉcOlympiens The CJS Environment Committee, which renamed itself ‘Les ÉcOlympiens’ this year, undertook a number of meaningful projects in 2013-14. Among them: the ‘Recycle Your Cell’ programme in the fall, a very successful sale of Fair Trade crafts from Ten Thousand Villages at Christmas, our ‘Semaine de la Terre’ activi-ties, and our annual Mother’s Day flower and plant sale which raised over a hun-dred dollars for ‘Save Our Seine’.

We ended the year in really good shape with a dozen active members, and we hope that lots of new students will join us in the fall. Our next major endeavour will be the creation of a composting programme at CJS.

We try to get everyone in the CJS community to look beyond day-to-day life to see the big picture. We all need to defend our future together. Summer is a time of travel, and we want to remind you that air travel is a major contributor to glob-al warming. Fortunately, we can all ‘fly carbon neutral’ by purchasing carbon off-sets. If you can afford the ticket, you can afford the offset. Many airlines have carbon offset programmes. For more information, you can consult http://www.davidsuzuki.org/what-you-can-do/reduce-your-carbon-footprint/

Where have the past few months gone? From performances in Brandon, Banff, and of course, in our own backyard, it has been a busy yet fulfilling year in the music program. Some of our most rewarding experiences were the ones out in the com-munity: playing with all the Grade 8 Im-mersion students at ESG and also being involved at their Spring Concert; singing at the Hospice Tree event, Foyer Valade and the D-Day Commemorative Event; and of course taking part in local band and choir festivals. We are also so proud of all of the students who took part in divisional music events, and of course the very pres-tigious Provincial Honour Bands and Hon-our Choir. We are so lucky to have such hard-working dedicated students in our music program!

Congratulations to six CJS Jazz Band stu-dents who were selected for the Manitoba Honour Jazz Bands! Grade 10 students Carla Bajus (trumpet), Kelsey Hender-son (trombone) and Lauren Tisdale (tenor sax) were part of the Junior Band. Grade 11 students Alora Anis (bari sax), Evan Howgate (trombone) and Daniel Keding (guitar) played with the Senior Band. The Honour Jazz Bands performed as part of the Jazz Winnipeg Festival on June 22nd. Bravo!

We would like to congratulate all of the students who were pre-sented with an award at the Soiree des Arts. You should all be very proud of your accomplishments! We would also like to thank our graduating students for four years of fantastic music-making and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Thank you to all who helped out in one way or another throughout the year with the Music Partnership or with individual music events. Your help has been much appreciated! The Partnership

was able to award scholarships to two graduates and to grant ten bursaries for summer music camps. Music students were able to use fundraising profits to subsidize music fees and trips because of hard-working parents who helped run fundraisers. Above all, we want to thank all parents for your continued support of music edu-cation at CJS. We would like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to all music parents to participate in next year's Music Partnership. We will welcome your time and efforts in many ways – no matter how big or small! Please mark Wednesday, September 17th on your calendar for our first Music Partnership meeting at 7 pm in the band room at CJS. All new music parents should attend this important meeting.

Have a great summer and see you in the fall!
