As we enter Australia’s most exciting month of racing we thought it opportune to reflect on

Leonard Joel’s dispersal of the most important Phar Lap memorabilia ever to come to auction.

On a Sunday afternoon in November 2012 we had the privilege of offering several items from

the Davis family collection. The highlights were the photo finish album and four horse shoes worn

by the great horse. The four gleaming aluminium horse shoes realised a staggering $31,720

(IBP) but the most thrilling moment came when we offered the album, the only known album

containing every Phar Lap race win in Australia. The 36 images mounted in a photo album of the

period realised $91,500 (IBP) and was finally secured by a public institution. If you have racing

or memorabilia that you would like identified and valued do not hesitate to contact Bethany

McGougan [insert details]

It feels auspicious that this month we

introduce our Sydney round of three distinct

auctions in our 96th year of finding buying

and selling solutions for Australian and

international clients. Three expert members

of my team have curated very distinct and

special auctions that cater for so many

collecting tastes. This is the hallmark of

Leonard Joel; managing and presenting

collections great and small across every

category. On Saturday November 14th Robert

Williams and John D’Agata present their

quarterly Jewels & Objet D’Art auction and

the following day indulge Asian and Antique

collectors with the extraordinary single

owner collection of Ivan Holland. And as if to

prove the point that we really are the busiest

auction house in the country, Sophie Ullin

presents on November 16th The Estate of

Colin Lanceley; this entire studio is teeming

with art and objects passionately collected

over 40 years. Both single-owner collections

were meticulously and very personally

assembled and are in my opinion “must sees”.

All three collections offer new and very

sophisticated collectors alike buying

opportunities so whether you are a novice

collector or an expert we do hope you can join

us in Sydney over this long and interesting

round of auctions.

An important Modern Design Single-Owner Collection

I started my first shop, Twentieth Century Design

in 1984 with my friend John Goad. We chose a

space on Carlisle Street (now the Galleon Cafe) in

St Kilda, which back in the day was not the most

fashionable destination. We painted it dove grey

and baby pink.

John and I frequented Leonard Joel on Inkerman

Street regularly. It was here that I made my first

major purchase. A 1950’s Rosando dining room

suite which to my surprise I managed to sell at a

profit. Funnily enough the purchaser of the suite

still comes into the gallery today.

A few years later we moved the shop to a location I

had been coveting for some time. A special corner

in Elwood that became available. It wasn’t long

before we were offered another space in Greville

street. We took this space and operated out of the

two locations until finally moving solely to Greville

street Prahran.

We began exhibitions in the space, ‘Featherston

to Whitehall’ and ‘The Italian Glass Collection’

of the late David Aboud (Pussy) being the most

memorable. Greville street was the last shop I had

in collaboration with the late John Goad, after the

lease ended I decided to branch out and see what

trends were happening overseas.

On my return from Europe I found the space I had

been looking for, 298 Malvern road Prahran where

I have been for the last 20 years.

The collaboration with my customers is the

central core and longevity of my business. These

connections and partnerships will be central to our

new direction and location.

The preparation for this auction has been monumental. After the success of our Asian

inspired March auction we were literally inundated with consignments. The result is this

two day extravganza offering an exciting range of Fine Jewels, Art and Objet D’Art from

around the globe.

Session I of the auction features over two hundred items of jewellery, including antique,

designer and signed pieces, not to mention a selection of wristwatches. Of the many fine

diamonds in the auction, lot 107 stands out as impressive, the 1.42ct fancy intense yellow

diamond is highlighted by a surround of pink and white diamonds. Lot 278, ‘Barbara and

August’ by Charles Blackman is the highlight of our petite art offering. Our selection of

Chinese antiquities is vast. The cover lot 370, a late Ming Dynasty Bodhisattva and lot 410,

a Tang Dynasty horse and rider are rarities on the Australian market. Traditional antique

items include lot 225, an important Elizabeth II silver coffee & tea service.

Session II, The Ivan Holland Collection, presents an insight into the world of a truly pas-

sionate collector. This vast collection represents over sixty years of collecting and includes

both Asian and traditional Objets D’Art. The auction is full of eclectic treasures. We are sure

that there is something special for you to add to your personal collection. We look forward

to meeting you at the viewing and that you are successful with a purchase at the auction.

A rare pink sapphire

Pink sapphires are considered a rare colour in

sapphire colour spectrum, particularly if the

stone is natural without alterations. A part of the

corundum family, sapphires are known to come in

a wide range of colours including the classic blue

together with green, white, purple, yellow and

orange, then moving into shades of pink and red

which is known as the ruby.

We are pleased to offer this exceptionally fine

natural pink sapphire of 13.00 carats, originating

from Ceylon. Vivid in colour, the hot pink cushion

cut stone is certified with no evidence of treatment

to the colour or clarity of the stone. In today’s

market, most sapphires are considered to have

undergone some kind of permanent treatment.

This beautiful and clean stone has minimal

inclusions with a liquid feather and scattered

crystallites viewed under magnification.

An exciting opportunity for our avid gemstone

collectors, this stunning piece is featured in a

claw set pendant enhancer that is beautifully

highlighted within a surround of old European cut

diamonds set in 15ct gold. This beautiful piece of

jewellery is one of many fine items to be offered in

our 14 November Jewels & Objets D’Art auction

in Sydney.

207 and 208 Colin Lanceley’s own work …. I remember these as a

young artist and am as charmed by them now as I was when I first

saw them … They are in my opinion highly original works, as is his

whole body of work . He draws from such diverse playing fields

but has his own inimitable way … These are stunning and striking

pieces that are a pivotal component of australian art history

David Bromley’s favourite things from the Estate of Colin Lanceley

It always fascinates me to see what motivates

people to collect.

I know, growing up, my family had to make a

decision between a family holiday or visiting a local

auction house called Barret and Barret in Adelaide.

We would purchase an old trunk and do it up

instead of driving to a coastal town.

In my bones I have this preference still, preferring

to purchase a piece of art or furniture before just

about anything.

I am a collector through and through. Building my

world, like a house of cards, combining what you

collect and surrounding yourself with your favourite

things, creating your life as you love it, expressing

your style through the things you admire and are

intrigued by.

Being an artist and a collector I was particularly

fascinated by Colin Lanceley’s collection and

thought it showed a very personal journey. It said

much about his exploration of different mediums

and varied taste, all adding up to give us all a great

insight into the man.

Being a collector myself and an artist, I have been

asked to choose my ten favourite pieces

By coincidence I was passed the catalogue to view

last night and took it with me to dinner with friends

Tom and Sylvia Lowenstein. When showing them

they were very moved, as they knew Colin and Kay

Lanceley very well. They remembered so many

pieces and we spent the evening reminiscing.

My favourites in no particular order are...

240 Patrick Caulfield , Garden with Pines …. Caulfield’s work has always

resonated with me and as a great lover of Arkley’s work I enjoy seeing the

work of someone surely inspirational for Arkley’s foundational map

48 Bill Coleman … I am always drawn to his work and have many myself

that I really enjoy

246 & 249 Gerrit Rietveld and Le Corbusier - The effect that these

creators had on world design is enormous and there is a reason for this;

they just nailed an aesthetic that is so wonderful and iconic.

299 I was told by Tom and Sylvia that he was a big rug collector and that

resonates with me …

95 Novelty lobster and crab pieces … Perhaps one of the most

remarkable collections ever offered was Warhol’s estate. Amongst the

most incredible paintings were masses of cookie jars and everyday kitsch

that once again showed the playful side of the serious collector

160 The vast majority of collectors explore markets and it is one of the

highlights in a collector’s week to look for treasure … this piece I can

imagine coming across it and not necessarily for any reason based in

name or artist’s resume but just being drawn to it … The art in this

collection is obviously very personal and a wonderful insight

318 Meccano model ship …. There’s a

seriousness in much of this collection, a

sophisticated eye and it is delightful to see

the playful and tender part of the collector

in pieces like this.

The sculpture collection on the whole I find very charming . One of the

sculptures has a fellow with a particulary humorous expression on his face

that was Tom Lowenstein’s favourite

I will let the audience look for that one…

Having your jewellery appraised at Leonard Joel

The quality, rarity and desirability  of  a  piece  of

jewellery will ultimately determine its market value

but for most people the joy of acquiring jewellery

and estimating its value is vastly more difficult than

the purchasing and valuing of a piece of furniture

or objet d’art. The quality of a gem or the innate

workmanship in a fine piece of jewellery can be

difficult to ascertain and there are some critical

skills to be employed.

At Leonard Joel we have experts with gemmological

and diamond grading qualifications, including

members of the  National Council of Jewellery

Valuers (NCJV) who can assist. The jewellery team

at Leonard Joel also have cumulative years of

experience with the buying and selling of jewellery

at auction.

When buying or selling jewellery you should have

confidence in the ability of an appraiser to:

• identify gems and their quality accurately,

•  recognise designer pieces both marked and

unmarked,

• understand current market trends,

•  place the jewellery in a historical context and

price it accordingly,

• provide a  response that will be ethical, honest

and informed.

The Valuers at Leonard Joel uphold these standards

and as a consequence clients with jewellery to sell

can feel confident in the appraisals made for their

consigned pieces and purchasers can be equally

confident of the pieces they are buying.

Our qualified team of Valuers can help in all aspects

of valuing and appraising jewellery and gain great

enjoyment from the excitement associated with

what “little gem” they might assist a client to

discover next.

Delivering Results at AuctionThe October Asian Art, Classic Furniture &

Objects auction promised to be the most diverse

offering of Asian art at Leonard Joel in more than

a decade ... and it certainly delivered! The result

of a concerted campaign to expand Leonard

Joel’s presence in the Asian art market, the high

quality offering was curated in partnership with

Chinese works of art specialist, Sally Robin and

Japanese works of art specialist, Trevor Fleming,

in conjunction with department specialists Guy

Cairnduff and Chiara Curcio, over a period of six

months. During this time, three Asian art valuation

and consignment events saw an extraordinary

number of highlight pieces brought out from the

cupboards and display cabinets of Melbourne

collectors and brought to the Leonard Joel’s

salerooms for appraisal, forming the core of a 216

lot-strong Asian art section, which yielded sales of

$312,600. Perhaps the most exciting result was

the sale of an 18th century Japanese Arita ware

VOC plate, lot 72. Painted in vivid blue on a white

ground, the plate was one of a collection of plates

made specifically for the use of high-ranking

officials in the Dutch East India Company and

was the largest of the models produced for the

company. With a provenance of direct descent

from a Sri Lankan family, methodical research by

Trevor Fleming saw the plate sell to an institution for

$24,400 (IBP), the vendor delighted that his prized

possession found such a reputable new home.

Another highlight lot, a rare Tang Dynasty Chinese

silvered and parcel gilt floriated box and cover, lot

8, found a buyer at $14,600 (IBP). However, the

most impressive result was achieved by an object

which was perhaps the most diminutive in size: lot

126, a 19th century Chinese horn libation cup. A

much sought after, symbolic item in the realms

of Chinese art, the libation cup was another item

with fascinating family provenance, handed down

by descent from Robert Francis, who was at one

time general agent for China Navigation Co in

Kiukiang and the proprietor of his own shipping

company. After protracted bidding between

a group of bidders, the cup eventually sold for

an extraordinary $97,600 (IBP) and generated a

round of applause in the packed saleroom!

Other highlights from the auction included lot

263, a rare Gustav Vichy automaton from the

Frank Freedman Collection, Pierrot Serenading

the Moon, which sold to a London bidder for

$19,520 (IBP) and lot 236, a rare 18th century

compound and simple microscope by renowned

London maker, George Adams, which sold also to

a London bidder for $9,760.

The evolution of the chair is quite an amazing thing. It has not only paralleled developments

in architecture and technology, but has also reflected the needs and concerns of society. It is

after all a functional aid to sitting, something we as humans do everyday of our lives without

actually thinking about it. Chairs also demonstrate a certain taste, they are extremely sym-

bolic to our own aesthetics and fashions of the time.

Not always about comfort, the chair is a representation of ones own decorative style. So

when you really consider it, no object accompanies us so closely through life as a chair. A

piece of furniture that has been subject to so many different influences. Certain designers

have had a major impact on the course of the chair, Marcel Breuer and Le Corbusier still

have their designs manufactured almost 100 years after the initial creations.

Leonard Joel’s Modern Design department has sold some important chairs over our last

few sales. Two significant Australian designs Grant Featherston Eleanor chair, and Marc

Newson 1st edition Embryo chair. There are also European designs we have been fortunate

to acquire. Italian collectable pieces such as the Vico Magistretti Veranda chair and Ettore

Sottsass colour block chair from the Westside collection.

Stay tuned for some amazing chairs in our December Modern design auction. Especially the

the set of twelve Mario Bellini Cab chairs designed in 1977 and still produced by Cassina,

not to be missed.

WWII aviation collection - Part of Monthly

collectibles auction on the 5th of November at

12pm

Headlining this month’s collectibles auction is an

impressive single owner collection of World War

II aviation items belonging to Victorian based

collector David Perrott.

Sparked from an interest in building model aircraft

as a child, Mr. Perrott has built up his specialist

collection over a number of decades, with pieces

sourced from a range of locations Australia wide.

Now choosing to focus on a large-scale aviation

project, Mr. Perrott’s collection will be going

under the hammer on the 5th of November.

On offer for historical and aviation enthusiasts

is an impressive number of well preserved

instrument panels and bombsights from allied

forces aircrafts such as the B-24 Liberator bomber

and Supermarine Spitfire. Of particular historical

interest is a complete Norden M-9 bombsight

with intact bomb release switch, which is the same

model used by American forces to drop bombs

on Japan to end the war.

Featured alongside these technical pieces are a

number of well-preserved personal items such as a

model wearing British flying boots, a Sidcot flying

suit, Mark 4B goggles, flying helmet and oxygen

mask. Unique items of historical and decorative

interest will also be available, such as a the nose

art featuring a boxing Kangaroo from a crashed

RAAF Wirraway, recovered in Malaya in 1942.

The aviation collection will be available to view at

Leonard Joel on Wednesday the 4th of November

from 9am – 8pm.

DOMINIC KAvANAGH, NEW YORK

An exhibition

Dominic Kavanagh’s exhibition of ‘New Work’ comprises a selection of wall based sculpture

completed over the past 12 months. Each work combines object based assemblage and collage

with a range of found and re-purposed materials including various vintage wall papers,

discarded timbers, metal and plastic objects.

‘If you walk in to Dominic’s Melbourne based studio it is like a ruined cabinet of curiosity;

pieces of machinery, parts of musical instruments, old rolls of wallpaper, fake plants, curtain

rings, a child’s chair; found objects of all sorts line the walls and the floor in a chaotic fashion.

And always, a suitably sounding industrial, folk or theatrical soundtrack and a soft glow

emanates from the space. Pieces with seemingly no value have been moved from city to city

to be reused, re-imagined and given new life. Each component whispers stories from the past,

nostalgic, re-invented and alive. There is alchemy at work here. New life rises from the ashes

and waste is turned to gold.’

Linsey Gosper, 2014.

Opening Wednesday 2nd of December from 6pm to 8pm .

Viewing from Monday 30th November to December 5th, 9am to 5pm.
