Church Regulations Regarding Fast and Abstinence

The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good

Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil as the

“paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves

to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of

Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of Fast, only one full meal is permitted, and two smaller meals, which, if

added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. On days of Abstinence, no

meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obligated by the law of

abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or

as a whole, is a serious obligation.

The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each

individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of

voluntary self-denial as penance.

The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept ( Easter Duty ) extends from the

First Sunday of Lent, February 18, 2018 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity,

May 27, 2018.

DearParishioners, !!!

There are two seemingly impossible requests in this

Sunday’s Gospel (Mark 1:40!45). The &irst one comes

from a man af&licted with leprosy. The second one

comes from Jesus. At the timeof Jesus, thosesuffering

with leprosy and other associated skin diseases were

strictly avoided because therewasno cure andpeople

fearedcontagion. Thosebrandedasleperswereisolat-

edandshunned.

Some had hope that perhaps the one who was driving

outdemonsandhealingthesickcoulddosomethingfor

theleperintoday’sGospel.However,theleperdaresto

break the law forbidding any interaction with the

healthy. “Ifyouwish,youcanmakemeclean.”Anyone

hearing the leper’s plaintive request would have

thoughtthemanwasaskingtheimpossible.

In response, Jesus breaks the taboos of his day. He

touchestheman,risks infection, incursritual impurity,

and amazingly restores the man to health. Jesus heals

themanand indoingsoallowshimtoreturnhometo

his family, relatives, and friends. Jesus frees someone

fromthe“deathsentence”ofleprosy.Hedoeswhathis

contemporarieswouldhavethoughtimpossible.

Jesus then informs the man. “See that you tell no one

anything.”PerhapsJesusmadethatrequestbecausehe

didnotwanttobeknownprimarilyasahealerbutra-

therasapreacherandteacher. Butnomattertherea-

son, it was an impossible request. Theman’s relatives

and friends would obviously notice his physical

cure. Furthermore, how could the man keep silent

about the wonderful thing Jesus had done for

him. Asking the cured man to be silent would be like

askingamanwhohadfallenwildlyinlovetosaynoth-

ing,orrequestingawomanwhohadwonthelotterytop

prize to keep it a secret, or asking a teenager cured of

cancertoactasifnothinghadhappened.Almostimpos-

sible! Even if such people never spoke a word, their

goodfortunewouldpositivelyradiatefromtheirfaces.

ImaginethatJesusweretotelluswhathetoldtheman

in this Sunday’s Gospel, namely, to say nothing about

what he has done for us. Sadly, we might have little

trouble ful&illing that request sincewe often fail to ap-

preciatetheamazingthingsJesusdoesforus.Ifwereal-

ized the amazing things Jesus Christ does for us, we

would act like the man in Sunday’s Gospel. Wewould
