    Using the keyboard

    Keyboard function keys

    Youcanaccess certainsystem settings quickly by pressingthe appropriatefunctionkeys.

    :Mutes/unmutes thesound. :

    Enables/disablesAirplane mode.

    :Decreases the volumelevel. :

    Displays all currentlyactive apps.

    :Increases the volumelevel. :

    Turns on/off thebacklightof the LCDscreen.

    Toggles the displaybetweenthe computerand anexternal device.

    Through the use of the functionkeys, youcanchange operational features

    instantly. To use this function, press and hold Fn ; thenpress one of the

    Connecting USB devices

    Your computer comes with two USB ports compatible with USB devices.

    The firsttime youpluga USB device into a particular USB portonyourcomputer, Windows automatically installs a driver for thatdevice. After thedriver has beeninstalled, youcandisconnectand reconnectthe devicewithoutperformingany additional steps.

    Before disconnectinga USB storage device, make sure your computer hasfinished transferringdata to thatdevice. Click the Safely Remove Hardwareand Eject Mediaiconinthe Windows notificationarea to remove the device

    before disconnecting.

    Note: Typically, Windows detects a new device after ithas beenconnected, and theninstallsthe driver automatically. However, some devices may require youto install the driverbefore connecting. Check the documentationprovided by the devices manufacturer

    before connectingthe device.

    Note: If your USB device uses a power cord, connectthe device to a power source beforeconnectingit. Otherwise, the device may notbe recognized.

    Your computer supports the followingtypes of memory cards:Secure Digital (SD) card

    Inserting a memory card

    Insertthe memory card until ittouches the bottom of the slot.Removing a memory card

    Gently pull the memory card outof the memory card slot.

    Notes: Insertonlyone card inthe slotata time. This card reader does notsupportSDIO devices (e.g., SDIO Bluetooth, etc.).

    Note: Before removingthe memory card, disable itby usingthe Windows safely remove

    hardware and ejectmedia utility to avoid data corruption.

    Novo button When the computer is off, press this button to start the

    Lenovo OneKey Recovery system or the BIOS setup utility,or to enter the boot menu.

    Rotation lock

    button

    Keeps the screen locked in portrait or landscapeorientation. Locking the screen rotation will disable thegravity sensing function, thereby preventing the screenfrom changing its orientation automatically dependingupon the angle at which it is held.

    Note: The screen rotation lock button will be disabled in notebook mode.

    Volume downbutton

    Decreases the volume level.

    Volume up button Increases the volume level.

    Micro HDMI port Connects to devices with micro HDMI input such as a TVor an external display.

    Note: It is recommended to use a certified HDMI cable, since an uncertified cable may be

    incompatible with this product.

    USB 3.0 port Connects to USB devices.Note: For details, see Connecting USB devices on page 9.

    Screen orientation

    Youcanrotate the display panel to your preferred orientation. The orientationof the display automatically changes (alternatingbetween

    portraitand landscape modes) dependinguponhow youhold thecomputer.

    To preventautomatic orientation, press the rotationlock button. Itislocated onthe rightedge of the computer (See illustrationbelow).

    Note: The screenrotationlock buttonwill be disabled innotebook mode.

    To switch from the Startscreento the Windows desktop, do one of thefollowing:

    Tap or click the Desktoptile onthe Startscreen.

    Press the Windows key + D.

    To switch from the desktop to the Startscreen, do one of the following:

    Tap or click Start from the charms bar.

    Press the Windows key .

    Move the cursor to the lower-leftcorner, and thentap or click the Startbutton.

    To switch differentapps, do the following:

    1 Swipe rightfrom the left-hand side of the screen, then withoutliftingyour finger swipe back left.

    2 Whenthe apps listappears, tap or click to switch apps.

    Note: If youare usinga mouse or the touch pad, move the cursor to upper-leftcorner and

    Charmsare navigationbuttons thatletyouaccess basic tasks quickly.Charms include: Search, Share, Start, Devices, and Settings. The charmsbaris the menuthatcontains the charms.

    To display the charms, do one of the following:

    Move the pointer to the upper-rightor lower-rightcorner until the charmsbar is displayed.

    Use one finger to swipe infrom the rightedge of the screenuntil thecharms bar is displayed.

    Press Windows key + C.

    Search charm

    The Searchcharm is a powerful new way to find whatyouare lookingfor,includingsettings, files, Web images, Web videos, etc.

    Putting the computer to sleep or shutting

    Putting your computer to sleep

    If youwill be away from your computer briefly, putthe computer to sleep.Whenthe computer is insleep mode, youcanquickly wake itto resume use,

    bypassingthe startup process.To putthe computer to sleep, do one of the following:

    Close the display lid. Press the Power button. Press and hold or right-click the Startbuttoninthe lower-leftcorner and

    selectShut downSleep.

    Openthe charms and thenselectSettings Power Sleep.

    To wake the computer, do one of the following:

    Press any key onthe keyboard. (Notebook mode only)

    Press the Power button.

    Press the Windows button.

    Shutting down the computer

    If youare notgoingto use your computer for a longtime, shutitdown.

    To shutdownthe computer, do one of the following:

    Press and hold or right-click the Startbuttoninthe lower-leftcorner andselectShut downShut down.

    Openthe charms bar and selectSettings Power Shut down.

    Note: Putyour computer to sleep before youmove it. Movingyour computer while thehard disk drive is spinningcandamage the hard disk, causingloss of data.

    Enabling wireless connection

    To enable wireless functions, do one of the following:

    Press F7 ( )to disable the Airplane mode if the mode is enabled.

    Openthe charms, selectSettings to openthe Network

    configurationpage. Toggle the Airplane mode switch to Off.

    Connecting to a wireless LANAfter wireless has beenenabled, the computer will automatically scanforavailable wireless networks and display them inthe wireless LAN networklist. To connectto a wireless network, click the network name inthe list, andthenclick Connect.

    Note:Some networks require a network security key or passphrase for connection. Toconnectto one of those networks, ask the network administrator or the Internet

    Service Provider (ISP) for the security key or passphrase.

    Chapter 3. Lenovo OneKey Recovery system

    The Lenovo OneKey Recovery system is software designed to back up and

    restore your computer. Youcanuse itto restore the system partitionto itsoriginal status incase of a system failure. Youcanalso create user backupsfor easy restorationas required.

    Backing up the system partition

    Youcanback up the system partitionto animage file. To back up the systempartition:1 Press the Novo buttonto startthe Lenovo OneKey Recovery system.

    2 Click System Backup.

    3 Selecta back-up locationand click Next to startthe backup.

    Restoring

    Youcanchoose to restore the system partitionto its original status or to apreviously created back-up point. To restore the system partition:1 Press the Novo buttonto startthe Lenovo OneKey Recovery system.

    2 Click System Recovery. The computer will restartto the recoveryenvironment.

    3 Follow the on-screeninstructions to restore the system partitionto itsoriginal status or to a previously created back-up point.

    Notes:

    If your computer is preinstalled with anoperatingsystem other thanWindows, OneKey

    Recovery system is notavailable. To utilize the features of the OneKey Recovery system, your hard disk already includes a

    hiddenpartitionby defaultto store the system image file and the OneKey Recovery

    system program files. This defaultpartitionis hiddenfor security reasons, which explains

    why the available disk space is less thanthe stated capacity.

    Notes: Youcanchoose a back-up locationonthe local hard disk drive or anexternal storage

    device. Remove the removable hard disk drive before startingthe Lenovo OneKey Recovery

    system. Otherwise, data from the removable hard disk drive mightbe lost. The back-up process may take a while. The back-up process is only available whenWindows canbe started normally.

    If Windows cannotbe started, thenfollow the steps below to startthe LenovoOneKey Recovery system:1 Shutdownthe computer.

    2 Press the Novo button. From the Novo Button Menu, selectSystemrecoveryand press Enter.

    Notes:

    The recovery process is irreversible. Make sure to back up any data youwish to save onthe system partitionbefore startingthe recovery process.

    The recovery process may take a while. So be sure to connectthe AC power adapter toyour computer duringthe recovery process.

    The above instructions should be followed whenWindows canbe started normally.

    What isthe BIOS setup utility?

    The BIOSsetup utility is ROM-based software. Itdisplays basic computerinformationand provides options for settingbootdevices, security,hardware mode, and other preferences.

    How can I start the BIOS setup utility?

    To startthe BIOSsetup utility:1 Shutdownthe computer.

    2 Press the Novo buttonand thenselectBIOS Setup.

    How can I change the boot mode?

    There are two bootmodes: UEFIand Legacy Support. To change the bootmode, startthe BIOSsetup utility and setbootmode to UEFIor LegacySupportonthe bootmenu.

    When do I need to change the boot mode?

    The defaultbootmode for your computer is UEFImode.     Display problems

    When I turn on the

    computer, nothing appears

    on the screen.

    If the screenis blank, make sure that:

    - The AC power adapter is connected to thecomputer, and the power cord is plugged into aworkingelectrical outlet.

    - The computer power is on. Press the Power buttonagainfor confirmation.

    If these items are setcorrectly, and the screenremainsblank, have the computer serviced.

    When I turn on the

    computer, only a white

    cursor appears on a blank

    screen.

    Restore backed-up files to your Windowsenvironmentor the entire contents of your hard diskto its original factory contents usingthe LenovoOneKey Recovery system. If youstill see only thecursor onthe screen, have the computer serviced.

    The screen goes blank

    while the computer is on.

    Your power managementis enabled. Do one of the

    followingto resume from sleep mode:- Press any key onthe keyboard. (Notebook mode

    Sleep problems

    The critical low-battery errormessage appears, and the

    computer immediately turns

    Make sure that:

    - The battery is charged.

    The computer does not

    return from sleep mode andthe computer does not

    work.

    If your computer is insleep mode, connectthe AC

    power adapter to the computer, thenpress theWindows buttonor the Power button.

    If the system still does notreturnfrom sleep mode,your system has stopped responding, and youcannotturnoff the computer; resetthe computer. Unsaveddata may be lost. To resetthe computer, press andhold the Power buttonfor eightseconds or more. Ifthe computer still does notreset, remove the ACpower adapter.

    Display panel problems

    The screen is blank. Do the following:

    - If youare usingthe AC power adapter or thebattery, and the battery status indicator is on, pressF12( )to make the screenbrighter.

    - If the power indicator is blinking, press the Powerbuttonto resume from sleep mode.

    - Press F9( )to confirm whether the backlightof

    the LCD screenhas beenturned off.- If the problem persists, follow the solutioninthenextproblem The screenis unreadable ordistorted.

    The screen is unreadable or

    distorted.

    Make sure that:

    - The screenresolutionand color quality are correctlyset.

    - The monitor type is correct.

    Incorrect characters appear

    on the screen.

    Is the operatingsystem or programs installedcorrectly? If they are installed and configuredcorrectly, have the computer serviced.

    Sound problems

    No sound can be heard

    from the speakers even

    when the volume is turned

    up.

    Make sure that:

    - The Mute functionis off.

    - The combo audiojack is notbeingused.

    -Speakers are selected as the playback device.
