Optimizing ITWith over 300,000 items in its product catalogue, Mutoh
relies on its IT systems running like a well-oiled machine
to get equipment out to customers on time. The company
therefore places great importance on maintaining top
levels of performance, reliability, stability, and flexibility for
its IT infrastructure.
Yasuhiko Taga, Manager of the Administrative Section of
Mutoh’s Information Systems Division, elaborates: “We
often get repeat orders from hospitals who expect us to
deliver fast. The ability to respond to customer requests as
quickly as possible is at the heart of our IT strategy.”
To ensure it always delivers vital medical supplies to
customers on time, Mutoh divided its IT infrastructure into
a core system, and an information system. Yasuhiko Taga
says: “Fulfilling customer orders requires pulling data from
multiple servers and processing it as fast as possible.”

The Problem: Unresponsive IT Impacts Customer ExperienceMutoh lays great importance on maintaining high levels of IT performance, reliability, stability, and flexibility. But over time its IT infrastructure was unable to keep pace with the demands of the business.
Slow Response to Customer Requests The NeedFulfilling customer orders required
pulling data from multiple servers and
processing it as fast as possible.
The ChallengeExtracting data from different systems
across multiple physical servers was
time-consuming and laborious.
The ResultThis impacted Mutoh’s ability to
respond to customer orders as
quickly as possible.
Unable to Improve Customer Experience The NeedTo accelerate order processing,
Mutoh moved its information systems
from dedicated servers to a
single virtualized environment.
The ChallengeWhen Mutoh decided to virtualize even
more information systems, the IT team
realized its five-year-old hardware
would be unable to cope.
The ResultMutoh could not further enhance
customer experience.
Kengo Yamaguchi, Deputy Manager of the Information Systems Division at Mutoh, adds: “Extracting data from different systems across multiple physical servers was a very time-consuming and laborious process.”
To accelerate order processing, Mutoh moved its
information systems from dedicated servers to a single
virtualized environment. The company ran the virtualized
environment on its existing hardware for five years before
deciding to extend the capabilities of its infrastructure.
Kengo Yamaguchi comments: “We wanted to virtualize
more information systems, but to do that we would have
needed to deploy an additional application server to
support the virtualized environment. We realized that we’d
reached the limit of our physical resources.”
Yasuhiko Taga remarks: “Even if we had been able to
increase the CPU and memory of our existing hardware, the
servers would still have five-year-old hard disk drives. We
decided that it was time for change – we wanted to take
advantage of the latest technology.”

The Solution: Rx for IT PerformanceImplementing a Lenovo-Nutanix hyperconverged solution allowed Mutoh to overcome its infrastructure challenges.
After discussing its technical requirements with Lenovo,
Mutoh opted for a hyperconverged infrastructure solution.
The company implemented four Lenovo Converged HX5510
appliances powered by the Intel® Xeon® E5 family of processors
and integrated with Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform software,
creating a single software-defined environment.
When building out its virtualized server environment five
years ago, it took two weeks to get everything set up
correctly. Working closely with Lenovo, Mutoh was able to
implement the Lenovo HX Series solution in just one day.
Kengo Yamaguchi recalls: “We were taken aback with how
fast the installation was. And it then took just one week to
migrate 50 virtualized servers to the new environment.”
Yasuhiko Taga says: “In terms of management, the Lenovo-
Nutanix hyperconverged solution ticked all of the boxes.
We can manage everything from the compute resources
to the virtualized environments via a single pane of glass.
Should we ever encounter any issues, we would be able to
see where the problem is at a glance. We really appreciate
how easy to use the management tools are.”
Mutoh is also highly satisfied with Lenovo’s support services,
as Yasuhiko Taga confirms: “The Lenovo engineers were on-
site during the installation, which was a great help.”
Shinji Nasu, President & CEO of Userside, says: “The Lenovo
engineers always respond rapidly to our support requests.
Based on the competent support we’ve received thus far,
we’re highly confident in them and the Lenovo hardware.”
