Third in the series of consultative workshops held earlier in the areas of curriculum framework and study materials, this workshop covered issues such as Face to Face Learner Support; Use of ICT and the Use of Media and Online Support in the area of Open Schooling. While delivering the inaugural address, Fr. Kunnunkal, Founder Chairman, NIOS pointed out the huge challenge before the NIOS to cater to independent learners in the open schooling system without much personal support. He also said that the human dimension in the form of personal commitment is an important aspect of providing learner support to these learners. Dr. S.S. Jena, Chairman, NIOS in his keynote address also emphasized on the importance of Learner Support in the Open Schooling System through Study Centres facilitated by the NIOS and hoped that this workshop would pave the way for the development of a suitable strategy plan for delivering effective Learner Support.     National Consultative Workshop on "Learner Supportin Open Schooling"

    A two day National Consultative Workshop on “Learner Support inOpen Schooling” was organised by the National Institute of OpenSchooling (NIOS) on February 25 and 26, 2013 at NIESBUD, NOIDA.

    Third in the series of consultativeworkshops held earlier in theareas of curriculum framework andstudy materials, this workshopcovered issues such as Face toFace Learner Support; Use of ICTand the Use of Media and OnlineSupport in the area of OpenSchooling.

    Fourth NIOS Silver Jubilee Lecture

    The Fourth NIOS Silver Jubilee lecture on “Open Schooling forEducation and Economic Development: Possibilities, Issues andChallenges” was delivered on 14th February 2013 by Dr. ArmoogunParsuramen, Former President, Global Rainbow Foundation,Mauritius and Former Director and Representative, UNESCO at theIndia International Centre, Seminar Hall, Max Muller Road, LodhiRoad, New Delhi.

    Dr. S.S. Jena, Chairman, NIOSwelcomed the gathering andintroduced the participants.

    Dr. Parsuramen, in his lecture,particularly referred to some of thenational challenges like bestservices to be provided by theNIOS to those with special needs;connectivity with learners throughICT, IEC, material, socialnetworking; strengthening theirstudy centers; increasing accessand improving quality invocational streams.

    In her presidential address,Ms. Vrinda Swarup, AdditionalSecretary, Department of

    Education and Literacy, MHRD, Government of India pointed outthat that the NIOS has emerged as an important tool for those whoare most excluded in any respect. She urged the NIOS to take up thetask of capacity building of teachers in the State Open Schools.

    Dr. Kuldeep Agarwal delivered the vote of thanks.

    National Science Day

    The National Science Day was celebrated on 28th February 2013 incollaboration with Vigyan Prasar, Department of Science andTechnology, Noida at Regional Centre of NIOS, A-31, Sector -62,Noida. Various competitions were organised for NIOS learnersfollowed by Quiz competition for NIOS Officials. Prof. Guvinder SinghSodhi, Khalsa College, New Delhi, delivered a lecture on“Management of Crime Scene Evidence”. Dr. Madhu Phul, formerSenior Scientist, NCSTC, Ministry of Science & Technology, NewDelhi, delivered a lecture on “An odyssey of the mind”. Theprogramme ended with the prize distribution ceremony.

    NIOS launches Diploma Programme in ElementaryEducation

    The National Institute of Open Schooling has launched a Two-YearDiploma Programme in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) for in-service untrained teachers in Jharkhand state serving in Governmentschools through ODL (Open Distance Learning) mode. The eligibilityfor admission to this programme is pass in Senior Secondaryexamination with 50% marks (45% marks for SC/ST) as per NCTEnorms. The total admission fee is Rs.12,000/- per trainee for twoyears. It comprises of 4 types of courses: Group-I-Contextual Issues,Group-II-Teaching-Learning at Elementary/Primary level, Group-III-Teaching-Learning at Upper Primary level and Group-IV-Internshipin Schools. The state has almost 20,000 serving teachers at primaryand upper primary levels. The programme is being implementedjointly in collaboration with Govt. of Jharkhand and will benefit allteachers who are untrained in the state working with the governmentschools and to meet the requirement of Right to Education Actimplemented by the state. The State of Meghalaya also has requestedNIOS to offer the programme for the in-service untrained teachers inthe state.

    • Advisory Committee on OER

    The second Advisory Committee meeting on Open EducationalResources (OER) was held on 12th February 2013 at SNDTUniversity-Juhu Campus, Mumbai to review the status of the Projectwork and to decide the future course of action for development ofOER. Dr. S.S. Jena, Chairman, NIOS chaired the meeting whichwas attended by Prof. Ram Takwale, Former VC, IGNOU; Prof.Vasudha Kamat, VC, SNDT, Mumbai; Prof. M.N. Deshmukh,Secretary, I– Consent, Mumbai; Dr. K.P. Wasnik, Director, VE, NIOS;Mr. S.K. Prasad, SAP, NIOS; Dr. Yogesh Kulkarni, Executive Director,Vigyan Ashram, Pabal and Coordinator, Rural Technology, Mrs.Sunetra Roday, Principal, MSICTHM, Pune and CourseCoordinator–Tourism and Hospitability and Mr. Pramod Kumar T.K.,Assistant Director, NIOS Regional Centre, Pune.

    The committee members reviewed the status of the OER Projectand discussed the Integration of OER with LMS (Moodle Platform),the NIOS-OER Copyright Policy, the 2nd phase of OER projectproposal and the payment of honorarium to the OER developers.

    The Chairman, NIOS while explaining the future action plan on OERinformed that the content available in OER will be free for everyone,however services like evaluation of students for online courses willbe charged. The members appreciated these ideas. The Chairmanalso said that CEMCA, New Delhi is collaborating with NIOS for theVirtual Open Schooling project and capacity building of the NIOSstaff especially on OER aspects.

    • Work Plan Agreement Signed between NIOSand CIDC

    The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and ConstructionIndustry Development Council (CIDC) signed a work plan agreementon 30.01.13 for the promotion of the Construction SupervisionProgram of NIOS. The learners of this program will be trained in thetraining institutes of CIDC all over the country.

    NIOS participates in New Delhi World BookFair 2013

    The National Book Trustorganized the New Delhi BookFair at Pragati Maidan from 4th -10th February, 2013. More than1020 exhibitors with 2100 Stallsand Stands participated from 28countries of the World. The NIOSalso participated in this Book Fair.The Fair which was inauguratedby Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Minister ofState for Human ResourceDevelopment, Government ofIndia was visited by many eminentpersonalities. Dr. K.P. Wasnik,Director (Voc.), NIOS and Sh. C.Dharuman, Director (Evalution),NIOS were present during theinauguration. The Chairman, NIOSand Director, NCERT also visitedthe NIOS stall. Lakhs of people

    visited the book fair. The visitors at the NIOS stall were orientatedabout the academic and vocational programmes of the NIOS andalso about Student Support Services. The visitors suggested thatNIOS should also arrange facility for sale of study material at thestall.

    NIOS Extends its Educational Opportunities toChhattisgarh

    A Regional Centre of the NationalInstitute of Open Schooling (NIOS)was inaugurated in the DIETCampus at Raipur by Dr. RamanSingh, Chief Minister ofChhattisgarh on February 4th,2013, to extend educationalopportunities through Open andDistance Learning (ODL)methodologies to prospectivelearners.     A state level consultation for formation of Odisha State Youth Policywas conducted on February 17th, 2013 at the Conference Hall,Campus 3 of KIIT University, Bhubaneswar with the aim to formulateYouth Policy 2013 by consulting across various thematic areas andeducation as one of the core areas from the grass root level,concerning Youth Development. Funded by UNFPA, the programmewas a joint effort of Govt. of Odisha, the Department of Sports &Youth Services GOI and UNFPA.

He secured thehighest percentage of marks (89%) in the NIOS SeniorSecondary exams held in October 2011 from theVisakhapatnam Region.
