As a member of the National Skills Academy for Retail Leicester College is part of the UK’s largest network of retail skills shops. Retail is an important part of any city and Leicester is now the eighth largest retail centre in the country.

This fast paced industry is constantly changing to meet the ever increasing needs and demands of customers, so trained and qualified staff are essential. Our training is flexible to fit around busier times of year.

Leicester College has been a key training provider in city and county wide initiatives to recruit and train staff in the retail sector. Our retail division is responsive to employers needs. We will adapt our provision to develop bespoke training programmes to support your recruitment requirements.

Leicester College, as a member of the NSA for Retail network, has delivered Aldi’s National Apprenticeship Scheme in selected stores throughout the East Midlands since 2012. The Apprenticeship Scheme offers the most successful apprentices the opportunity to progress to the position of Assistant Store Manager.

Ellie-May Scotting is enrolled on the Retail Skills Apprenticeship Level 2 Programme through the College.She says the work-based programme is the perfect course for her.

“Each day at the store is different. It’s a challenging role but the rewards are brilliant. I hope to see myself in a management role at Aldi at the end of my three year course.”

Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is a work based training programme which allows employees to complement the skills that they learn, develop and use within the workplace with theoretical knowledge gained at College.

Training outcomesOn completion employees will achieve:• a NVQ in their chosen occupation (NVQ Level 2 for

Intermediate Apprenticeships and NVQ Level 3 for Advanced Apprenticeships)

• technical certificates relevant to their occupation and level of work• Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT• workplace Health and Safety knowledge.

AssessmentAssessment is undertaken in the workplace and at College. Employees should demonstrate competence across various work-based tasks and compile a portfolio of evidence.

Retail Skills Advanced Apprenticeship

Course Code: C2414 Fees: 1Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?It allows employees to complement the skills and knowledge that they have learned, developed and used within the workplace with a recognised qualification.

The competence-based element of the programme requires a number of units be completed, each attracting a designated number of credits. The units chosen are tailored for a variety of job roles such as senior sales assistant, manager or visual merchandiser.

Who should attend?This training is suitable for senior sales assistants, visual merchandisers or those in a supervisory or management position with the store.

Duration18 to 24 months, depending on the employee.

ProgressionEmployees could look at a higher level qualification providing that they are working at a supervisory/management level within their store. This training can enhance career progression in the retail sector.

Retail Skills Intermediate Apprenticeship

Course Code: C2413 Fees: 1Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?This course allows employees to complement the skills and knowledge learned, developed and used within the workplace with a recognised qualification.

Who should attend?Senior Warehouse staff take additional responsibility for looking after teams to ensure tasks are completed on time and in line with organisational and customer requirements.

Duration12 to 24 months

ProgressionUpon completion of the apprenticeship employees can progress on to the advanced apprenticeship providing that they have the opportunity to work at a higher level or in a supervisory position. Career progression within the retail sector can be enhanced through the completion of this training.

Warehousing and Storage Intermediate Apprenticeship

Course Code: C2413 Fees: 1 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?It allows employees to complement the skills and knowledge that they have learned, developed and used within the workplace with a recognised qualification.

Who should attend?The apprenticeship programme would suit warehouse operatives within the supply chain operation and is specifically designed for those who are involved in the movement and storage of goods.

Duration12 to 24 Months.

ProgressionEmployees who complete this Apprenticeship can progress on to any related higher level qualification. This training can enhance career progression in the warehousing and storage sector.

Warehousing and Storage Advanced Apprenticeship

Course Code: C3237 Fees: 1Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?The aim of this Advanced Apprenticeship is to provide the warehousing Industry with staff who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to help their businesses grow and to provide a career path for Apprentices to higher level jobs and qualifications. The qualification consists of the Level 3 Diploma in Warehousing and Storage which is a combined qualification incorporating competence and knowledge, which is separately assessed.

Who should attend?Senior Warehouse staff who take additional responsibility for looking after teams to ensure tasks are completed on time and in line with organisational and customer requirements.

Duration18 to 24 months, depending on the employee.

ProgressionSuccessful completion allows Advanced Apprenticeships in any of the following Logistics Operations or Driving Goods Vehicles.

Customer Service in Retail

What is the training about?The course is designed to complement and improve the delegate’s customer service standards/expectations. Who should attend?The course can be tailored to the needs of the individual or organisation.

Training outcomesIt covers customer service and the customer experience, the public perception of the store, personality verses productivity and tips and techniques to improve your delegate’s service.

DurationThree hours.

AssessmentDelegates will receive a College certificate.

ProgressionTo a vocational retail or customer service programme or apprenticeship in retail or customer service if already employed in the industry. To improve the employees customer service skills which may lead to promotion within your organisation

Retail KnowledgeEDI Certificate

Course Code: C0263 Fees: £724 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?This qualification is knowledge-based and is aimed at employees who are currently working within the Retail sector and wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of the sector and industry.

Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements.

Training outcomesTo achieve the Level 2 Certificate in Retail Knowledge, employees must achieve a minimum of 14 credits: 10 credits from Group A and four credits from Group B.

Units can be selected from the following: • understanding customer service in the retail sector • understanding how a retail business maintains health and

safety on its premises • understanding the retail selling process, • understanding how individuals and teams contribute to

the effectiveness of a retail business.

DurationOne week blocks.

AssessmentThe course will be assessed via examinations.

ProgressionThis qualification is designed to allow progression onto the Level 2 Diploma in Retail Knowledge or on to an apprenticeship in retail.

ESF Flexible training for Retail Level 2 Certificate

Course Code: C2266 Fees: £0 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?This training is ideal for employees who want to enhance their career prospects in Retail. The Level 2 in Retail has been designed for team members doing general Retail duties as part of their normal job role. This gives employees the opportunity to develop in their job role and gain a recognised qualification within the industry.

Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements, apart from the need to be employed, working eight hours or more per week and to be aged 19 and over. This should be in a retail sales environment or be training in that area and have a contract of employment.

Training outcomesThis course will give the opportunity to study three units in Retail Sales which could include: • helping customers choose products in a retail environment• dealing with customer queries and complaints• processing payment for purchases.

These are the main titles that employees could work towards but we can adapt this around the job role which suits the employee and the employer. This will support them to up-skill or progress in their career.

DurationSix months

AssessmentThe course will be assessed in the workplace.

ProgressionOnce they have completed this training employees can consider progressing onto an Apprenticeship programme or other accredited training. Alternatively this training could support their progression/promotion at work.

What is the training about?This training is ideal for employees who want to enhance their career prospects in Retail. It has been designed for team members doing general Retail duties as part of their normal job role.

Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements, apart from the need to be employed working eight hours or more per week and to be aged 19 and over. Employees should be employed in a retail sales environment or be training in that area and have a contract of employment.

Training outcomesThis programme gives employees the opportunity to study three units in Retail Sales which could include. • help customers choose specialist products (eight credits)• demonstrate products to customers (three credits)• promote food or drink products by offering samples to

customers (two credits).

What is the training about?This training is ideal for employees who want to enhance their career prospects in Warehousing. The Level 2 NVQ in Warehousing and Storage has been designed for team members doing general Warehousing duties as part of their normal job role. This programme gives employees the opportunity to develop in their job role and gain a recognised qualification within the industry.

Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements, apart from the need to be employed working eight hours or more per week and to be aged 19 and over. Employees should be employed in a Warehousing role or be training in that area in order to gather evidence for the qualification.

What is the training about?It is designed to promote confidence when dealing with health safety and security in retail premises. Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements.

Training outcomesIt covers the importance of health and safety legislation, how to identify potential risks and hazards, how to deal with accidents in the workplace, the importance of cleanliness and hygiene, the causes of stock loss, ways to prevent theft and maintaining the security of cash.

DurationOne day.

AssessmentDelegates will receive a College certificate.

ProgressionDelegates can move on to a recognised health and safety qualification, such as IOSH managing safely or vocational retail course.

What is the training about?It is designed to meet the specific needs of retailers and supply chain organisations where staff are required to lift and carry stock. Who should attend?There are no specific entry requirements.

Training outcomesIt will cover manual handling techniques, health and safety regulations, lifting large items such as mattresses and furniture and tips and techniques for preventing work place injuries and has been designed with the specific needs of retailers in mind.

DurationOne day.

AssessmentDelegates will receive a College certificate.

ProgressionDelegates can move on to a recognised health and safety qualification, such as IOSH managing safely or vocational retail course.

Point of Sale Procedures for Age-restricted Products

Course Codes: C0256 Fees: £120Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?It will allow delegates to be more confident in the workplace when dealing with age-restricted products at point of sale. Who should attend?This course is suitable for any delegate from the retail environment.

Training outcomesIt will cover what the law says about point of sale age-restricted products, tips and ideas on how to identify which products are age-restricted and the forms of identification that can be accepted, how to deal with conflict at point of sale and how to link the restrictions to company policy.

DurationOne day.

AssessmentDelegates will receive a College certificate of attendance.

ProgressionDelegates can progress to a vocational retail qualification such as retail skills certificate at Level 2 or apprenticeship if they are working in a retail environment.

Retail SkillsCertificate/Diploma

Course Code: C1318 Fees: 3 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?Retail Skills qualifications offer a wide selection of units allowing training to be tailored to a specific job role within each sub-sector of the industry.

Who should attend?Employees must be working within the retail sector and have experience of carrying out a range of tasks in order to complete this training.

Training outcomesEmployees will achieve either a certificate or diploma at Level 2 depending upon the number of credits accumulated from their chosen units. The skills and knowledge gained through the completion of this training will give employees the confidence to enhance the delivery of customer service and improve sales within their organisation.

DurationOne year.

AssessmentOn-site assessment within the workplace includes using a variety of methods such as observation, oral and written questioning, and witness testimony.

ProgressionEmployees can progress on to the Level 3 Retail Skills Diploma, providing that they have the opportunity to work at a higher level or in a supervisory position within a retail environment.

What is the training about?At this level the training has three different pathways to choose from: management, sales professional or visual merchandiser. This allows employees to complete training which is best suited to their job role. Who should attend?Employees must be working with the retail sector as either a senior sales assistant, visual merchandiser or at supervisory/management level in order to complete this training.

Training outcomesEmployees will achieve a diploma at Level 3 which will be made up from units which are appropriate for their job role. Valuable skills and knowledge will be gained which should contribute to increased sales, higher levels of customer service and improved motivation and effectiveness of staff.

DurationOne year.

AssessmentOn-site assessment within the workplace includes using a variety of methods such as observation, oral and written questioning, and witness testimony.

ProgressionUpon completion of Retail Skills Level 3, employees can progress on to a higher level qualification providing that they are working at supervisory or management level within the retail sector.

What is the training about?It is designed to complement and improve the delegate’s sales experience and improve the income to the organisation through increased sales. Who should attend?This half-day course will cover the importance of product knowledge, the seven steps to selling, how to improve your link selling skills and managing performance to improve sales.

Training outcomesIt covers the value of the delegate’s own personal development, how to maximise their personal effectiveness, the importance of an effective team, how to encourage teamworking and how teamworking can improve overall performance. This should help to increase the productivity of the team.

What is the training about?This is a work based learning courses based around the sales profession. Who should attend?Employees need to be working in a sales field.

Training outcomesEmployees need to gain 22 credits in the form of units. These include time planning in sales, delivering reliable customer service, selling face to face or over the telephone, meeting after sales needs, buyer behaviour and communicate information and knowledge

AssessmentAssessment is continuous via coursework.

ProgressionEmployees can move onto a level 3 course in Customer service or Management. They will develop a full range of sales skills starting with theoretical perspectives and how these are applied as everyday sales techniques.

What is the training about?This training is about the safe and efficient receipt, storage, handling and dispatch of goods in a warehousing, storage or logistics company. It is very flexible, enabling employees to choose optional units which best suit their job role and daily duties. Who should attend?Employees who are working within the distribution sector and who undertake varied warehousing, storage and logistics activities.

Training outcomesEmployees will gain valuable skills and knowledge in order to enhance the delivery of customer service and improve efficiency within their organisation.

DurationOne year.

AssessmentOn-site assessment within the workplace includes using a variety of methods such as observation, oral and written questioning, and witness testimony.

Warehouse and Storage EDI Diploma

What is the training about?The course is a mixture of knowledge and practical competence within the warehouse industry. It is a credit based qualification that can be tailored around the employees job role.

Who should attend?This qualification is designed for employees who are working in warehousing and storage operations who are likely to have responsibility for supervising the work of others, leading teams and responsibility for other operations.

Training outcomesEmployees must achieve 13 credits covering mandatory units, which include:• customer service • leading teams• supervising the receipt, storage or dispatch of goods • taking responsibility for health, safety and security.

Employees must then choose from units from a range of topics which include:• moving/ handling goods • processing orders• auditing stock • allocating work • managing professional development • scheduling logistics operations • complying with legal requirements • responding to problems • improving performance of logistics operations.

AssessmentAssessment will be carried out within the workplace with different assessment methods to prove the employees competence.

ProgressionSuccessful completion allows progression to a management programme such as ILM leadership and management Level 3 or 5 You already need to be in a management position but this will give you good recognition within the sector.

What is the training about?A one-day course designed to equip managers and supervisors with the skills to manage their team more effectively while providing excellent customer service. Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements.

Training outcomesThe course will help delegates to make the transition from team member to an efficient and respected supervisor. Delegates will learn how to create high-performing teams and how to coach for high performance, how to empower the team to deliver excellent customer service, hire and train for success, manage change and productivity while focusing on the customer and implement all the above to create winning business strategies. This will encourage strong leadership to help increase a competitive edge and ensure managers give the right support to their teams to improve the customer experience.

What is the training about?The half-day course will transform frontline staff in to an effective sales team who not only listen to customers’ needs but maximise on those needs, whilst still giving great service. Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Training outcomesDuring the session delegates will understand the sales cycle and how to influence customer purchasing decisions. They will also learn the value of knowing their product/services by listening to the needs of their customers, and understand the impact of “moments of truth” by looking at the business through the eyes of the customer and the benefits of selling beyond the basics. The course will build confidence and skills in selling by encouraging delegates to sell the right products and services to maximise profits.

What is the training about?Customer service is recognised by retailers as the key way to stand out in an increasingly competitive and crowded market. This course will improve the delegate’s customer service by providing a fundamental framework to base their customer service on. Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements.

Training outcomesDelegates will learn valuable skills and techniques essential to service professionals. During the one-day course delegates will gain an understanding of the value of retail in the UK. Topics include the importance of excellent customer service, the skills of effective communication, how to listen to customers and respond effectively to their needs, the lifetime value of a customer to business and the five key principal commitments that enable staff to “go the extra mile”.
