PTA Grads Achieve 100% Pass Rate

Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) graduates received a 100 percent, first attempt, pass rate on the National Examination for Physical Therapist Assistants. Their certification examination scores were well above the first time national passage rate of 89.2 percent for 2017.

Graduates of LCCC’s PTA program earn an Associate in Applied Science degree that is fully accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association through the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. They are prepared for jobs in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, outpatient physical therapy practices, pediatric centers, home care and schools. LCCC’s PTA program director is Anthony Fragassi, PT, and clinical coordinator is Evelyn Petrash, PT.

The 24th annual Foundation Golf Classic was held Monday, Sept. 25, at the Lehigh Country Club, with more than 80 golfers participating. The weather was hot and dry, and the day was a success. Thanks to the Rothrock Family for being honorary chairs of the event and helping to raise funds for the Bruce Rothrock Entrepreneurial Scholarship Fund.

Drone Classes OfferedThis fall, two classes in small Unmanned Aircraft

Systems (sUAS), commonly referred to as drones, were held for the first time. With the commercial applications of drones increasingly expanding into businesses such as construction, law enforcement, agriculture, photography and videography and engineering, drone flying skills can be of value to many employers.

The class is offered at the college’s Schnecksville campus and includes flying time. It is being taught by John Fries, pilot, commercial drone operator and co-founder of Lehigh Valley Drone.

The LCCC course, Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, covers the knowledge required to successfully complete the Federal Aviation Administration Remote Pilot Certification.

College Fairs on Campus Help Students with Next StepThe college hosted transfer fairs for students, alumni and the public at Schnecksville, Allentown and Tamaqua in early

October, with representatives from various colleges and universities on hand to answer questions about transferring from LCCC to a four-year school. Institutions from Albright to York College helped students who were interested in their schools.

In addition, the college hosted the PACAC Regional College Fair early this month. This fair is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association for College Admission Counseling and brought more than 100 colleges and universities to campus. Interested students learned about academic programs, admissions requirements, campus life and scholarship opportunities.

LCCC Awards Two Strategic Innovation Grants

by the SIG CommitteeCongratulations to Professor Holly Morris for her

submission of a grant proposal to develop clay replicas of body parts and related adaptation of lessons for use in biology and anatomy/physiology labs. This pilot project will test the efficacy of conducting selected labs using models instead of animal cadavers. Her work demonstrates an innovative solution to shortages and costs related to the use of animals in labs.

Professors Jennifer Myskowski and Ruth Munilla were awarded grant funding for the continuation and expansion of their project related to professional development for instruction of English Language Learners transitioning to English course work. During a pilot conducted this summer, English faculty participated in a three-credit class developed by Myskowski and Munilla, which addresses teaching strategies to aid in successfully supporting our students. In spring 2018, the class will be extended to English adjuncts and Reading faculty. This work has implications towards student success and retention.

LCCC’s New Intro to Theatre Arts Class Has Started A new class this fall gives students the opportunity to

learn about theatre in a new class in partnership with the Civic Theatre of Allentown. Introduction to Theatre Arts, taught by Ben Perusa, is held at the Civic Theatre. This three-credit class introduces student to various forms oftheatre ranging from the Ancient Greek to the contemporary forms of plays performed today. By reading as well as attending actual productions, the student will learn about the important role theatre plays in society. Students will become familiar with drama, theatre history and theatre production and will have hands-on exposure to acting, directing, playwriting and stagecraft.

New Ad Campaign LaunchesThe college’s new advertising campaign focuses on student testimonials

and how starting at LCCC means they can go anywhere. These cable and television commercials will air on various stations throughout the year. In addition, the testimonials will be expanded into 1-2 minute vignettes

that will be included on the website. Featured in these three TV spots are athlete Erick Marfil (Social Services), Alicia Durst (TV and Film) and Maria Martinez (Business).

Open House Set for Oct. 26The college will host an open house for all prospective students and their families on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 6 to

8 p.m. in the Lisa Scheller-Wayne Woodman Community Services Center, on the Schnecksville campus.LCCC admission and financial aid representatives, academic advisors, as well as academic program coordinators will

be on hand to answer questions. The open house is an excellent opportunity for prospective students of all ages to tour the campus, learn about scholarship opportunities and learn how LCCC can pave the way for an exciting and rewarding career.

Collective Impact Hockey Event a HitLCCC and Penn State-Lehigh Valley employees, students and supporters enjoyed a

spirited evening at the Flyers exhibition hockey game on Sept. 20 at the PPL Arena, a fundraising event for the new Collective Impact Scholarship fund. The two institutions are forging a new innovative partnership that will benefit students who want to attend college, but have limited means to afford it. The Collective Impact Scholarship Fund will be used to provide last dollar support to students who graduate from one of the high schools in the Lehigh Valley and go on to attend LCCC or PSU-LV. The scholarship fund also aims to assist in the development and retention of talent, while supporting students graduating with a degree in fields needed to fill talent gaps in the Lehigh Valley workforce.

LCCC Hosts Cyber Security Presentation

Lance Hawk, a certified computer security professional, will speak on “The Big Three Cyber Threats and Risks: Data Breaches, Ransomware and the Internet of Things,” on Thursday, October 19, at 7 p.m. in room 202, Technology Center, main campus in Schnecksville.

Hawk, current president and owner of Computer Forensics and IT Security Solutions, LLC, has 25 years of experience with Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. in computer forensics and investigations. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration, with additional studies in information sciences, all from Muhlenberg College.

In addition, the opening of LCCC’s Cyber Center, which will support the college’s expanding cyber security curriculum and community, will be celebrated. As part of this effort, LCCC is participating in the “Stop. Think. Connect.” National Network to promote community cyber security awareness, is supporting teams that will compete in the National Cyber League (NCL) competition and the National Security Agency (NSA) Day of Cyber, and is promoting awareness of cyber security professions.

Military Appreciation DayThe college sponsored Military Appreciation Day at The Great Allentown Fair

on Aug. 31, coordinated by Leslie Bartholomew. They raised $220 for the PA Wounded Warriors Inc. (PAWW). Volunteers greeted many visitors, including prospective and current students, and Clawrence the Cougar was a big hit with children. They also gave away six tickets to the Rascal Flatts concert to three lucky winners.
