Primary Task Objectives
1. Deploy flame retardants2. Guide “smoke jumper”
teams to landing zones3. Rescue trapped hikers and
transport to safety zoneFrom: Alaska Fire services, http://fire.ak.blm.gov/afs/images/blm_jumper.jpg

Secondary Task Elements
• Avoid advancing flame fronts to prevent damage to AGV and limit additional fire initiation sites
• AGV must coordinate with aerial water bombers to deploy final firebreak
• AGV must return to safety zone at the completion of the mission

Preliminary Competition
• The AGV must complete following objectives:– Rescue Hikers, – Guide smoke jumpers to LZ
• No additional fire site penalties
• Computer controlled with automatic start• 5 minutes to run your machine three times• 1% of course grade• Your score will be ranked only against teams
in your studio section.

14
Qualifying Competition
• Your team’s machine will compete against other machines in all aspects of the design challenge.
• You will compete several times during the studio period against a variety of opponents.
• The results from this qualifying round will be used to seed the brackets for the final tournament.

Design Competition – Friday 11/12
• Your machine will compete in two events:
• a) Design Review:– Starting at 5:00pm a panel of judges will perform a design
review of your machine and Raider Design. You will need to describe your machine quickly and clearly to the judges that visit your machine. The judges will score your machine on aesthetics, ingenuity, and presentation.
• b) Wildfire Search & Rescue AGV:– Your machine will compete against other machines to
achieve the best score. The top two scoring machines in each contest will be declared winners.
– The contest will be a double elimination tournament for the initial rounds, and then single elimination for the later rounds

ME2110 Design Competition
• The main design project is a 9 week, constrained resource (<$100) team engineering design project
• Design, build and test an autonomous device that must perform multiple tasks of varying complexity
• Competition tasks are constructed to create an under-constrained design problem based on a main theme
• Cargo Crisis: Pirates of the Horn• Oil Spill Crisis
• Repeatability is critical: ~10 consecutive wins required to win the competition

Contest Grade Scoring
Based on number of wins
•Top team(s) = 10 pts.
…Linear interpolation
•Teams with 0 wins = 1 pt.
• 5% of Course Grade is from Design Review• 15% of Course Grade is from Performance

Hint…
Franciscan friar William of Ockham
OCKHAM’S RAZOR –entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem
Translation:entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity
OR:
All things being equal, the simplest solution tends to be the best one
Good guidance for DFM efforts
Simplest design/process is usually the most producible
