Trimble S Series Robotic Total Stations

Trimble S7 Robotic Total Station Trimble TSC3 Controller

Total Stations measure:

Horizontal and vertical angles;

Horizontal, vertical & slope distances;

Topo survey points, setting out points & offsets

using coordinate geometry;

Resect instrument positions, adjust traverses,

and many other functions.

Angles are measured in º ‘ “ Distances in metres

Temporary adjustments to the centring, levelling and focusing of the RTS need to be made each time before the instrument is used.

Setting up the Total Station over a known point Centring and approximate Levelling

1. Extend the tripod legs whilst together to approximately chin height and tighten the clamps. 2. Place the tripod approximately over the ground point, approximately level and at a

comfortable height with the legs spread equally more than 1m apart. 3. Set the tripod up with head over the station mark, screw on the instrument and ensure that

the footscrews are in the centre of their runs. 4. Using the optical plummet, centre the instrument approximately over the station mark,

(10mm max) - keep one tripod leg stationary and move the other two. 5. Tread the legs securely into the ground, then adjust the optical plummet focus by placing

your hand underneath the optical plummet and turning the plummet dial until you can clearly see the circle (reticule). Then push or pull the optical plummet to focus on the survey ground point. This may take a bit of back and forth to make sure both are clear.

6. Whilst looking through the optical plummet, centre the instrument over the ground point exactly using the footscrews.

7. Level the instrument approximately by moving the tripod legs up or down at the knees to centre the circular bubble. Move leg A, B OR C (see middle pic) to move the bubble in that direction which will not affect the centring very much.

Now turn on both the Total Station Instrument (Trigger Key) and the TSC3 Controller (Green Key). - If required, establish a connection between the controller and the instrument by changing the radio settings to the same values on both but should be Automatic. S Series Total Station - Face 2 Display TSC3 Controller -Trimble Access Menu screen Configuring the controller to communicate with a Trimble robotic total station 1. From the Trimble Access menu, tap Settings / Connect / Radio settings. (if the menu does not appear, Press the Trimble Icon Button near the top of the TSC3 2. Change the Radio channel and Network ID to the same values as those set on the instrument. 3. Tap Accept.

The TSC3 controller says “Starting Robotic Connection”

Creating a New Job and the Electronic level screen Tap General Survey on the TSC3 screen - General Survey is used to Manage your jobs, Key in data, Carry out COordinate GeOmetry functions, to Measure points and control the Instrument functions (see below). The current Job name is shown on the top line.

Tap Jobs / New Job to show the Job Creation screen, shown below:

Enter a name for the job, keep the default settings, with Scale Factor 1, Tap Accept.

The Job screen re appears

Tap Instrument/ Electronic Level to show the Electronic level screen

-the Electronic level screen appears on the TSC3 (may have done so already)

If the instrument is not level enough, as shown by the RED bubbles above, you will get a tilt error message: level the instrument with the tribrach circular bubble first to bring the electronic level into range.

1. Rotate the instrument until the bottom edge of the Back Panel is parallel to two of the tribrach footscrews.

2. Centre the electronic level of the Trunnion axis shown above using the two footscrews at the bottom. The bubble moves in the same direction as your left thumb.

3. Centre the electronic level for the Sighting axis by turning the third footscrew. 4. To complete the levelling process, tap Accept. 5. When the electronic level bubbles are centred, the instrument is perfectly level at that time

and there is a tilt compensator that keeps it level over a range of up to 5’- shown by GREEN bubbles

Recentring – 1. Re-centre the instrument precisely over the ground point by moving it over the tripod plate,

but try not to rotate it on the plate. 2. Re-level and then Re-centre the instrument if necessary.

Parallax removal Parallax is the apparent movement of the cross- hairs in relation to the target when you move your head sideways. The cross- hairs need to appear to be at the same distance as the target:

1. Point the telescope at a light object (hand/sky/paper), and focus the Telescope eyepiece until the crosshairs are sharply defined.

2. You will not see parallax when you use the Telescope focusing knob (long focus) to focus onto an object (but other users may, so they will have to reset the eyepiece).

The General Survey screen Status bar The status bar is on the top right side of the General Survey screen. The equipment that is connected to the controller determines which icons appear on the screen. The following table describes the status bar icons.

Click on the prism icon, to see the list of prisms previously configured:

If the target is on its own detail pole the value shown is a True Height - check it with a tape

The screen above shows the (purple) 180 prism #1, with a 0mm prism constant and a 0.000 target height, which is being changed to a MT1000, (red LEDs) with a 10mm prism constant (standard for MT1000) and a 0.000 target height at the moment. The target ID is set to 1 which may be changed using the dial on the MT1000.

Additional prism types can also be added here: usually select Custom and enter offset distance. Other settings may need to be changed such as turn off active target..

The KOREC prism height is 50mm lower than that shown on the MT1000 and AT360 detail poles.

DR is Direct Reflex – no target required

Tap Accept when the correct prism type for the Backsight point is configured.

The number beside the instrument icon shows instrument height

The numbers beside the target icon show the target height, prism constant and target number

Tap Measure / VX & S Series: (VX is an older RTS Model series)

Select Station Setup from the menu: a Limited menu is available for Measure until the station setup is complete

Accept the Correction screen settings

In the Station Setup dialogue Enter Point Name,

Code, -use the arrow at the end of the box to enter the code from the KOREC Code list & Instrument Height - use the arrow at the end of the box to check the height reference mark, which may be either True Height or Bottom Notch.(See Instrument height measurement later.)

Enter the Backsight point name, Code, Target Height and

Select Angles & Distance as the measurement Method

The screen above shows the 180 prism #1, with a 10mm prism constant and a 1.000 target height, which has just been entered

The instrument icon shows instrument height 1.650m and that it is in Standard measurement mode (named STD on the

Instrument Functions screen accessed by clicking on the instrument icon), which is more accurate than Tracking (TRK). See screen below

Enter the Grid Bearing (the Azimuth value) for the Backsight to orientate the survey to North

Provided that the Target is setup, then aim the Total Station at the Target, it should lock onto it and the TSC3 then says “Target Locked”- a padlock appears on the target icon. If not, then Click on the Total Station icon which shows the Instrument Functions screen, then Click on the Autolock button.

When the Total Station is locked to the Backsight target Tap Measure

If the Instrument and Backsight have known coordinates then the next screen will display the measurement delta values (deviation from the expected), otherwise the measurement summary is displayed as below:

After checking that the values are as expected, Tap Store, the General Survey Screen

reappears and TSC3 tells you “Setup Completed”

Measuring Topo points in a conventional survey To measure a topographic point using the General Survey software and a conventional instrument: 1. From the Measure menu, Select Measure topo. 2. Enter a value in the Point name field. 3. Enter a feature code in the Code field. 5. In the Method field, Select Angles & Distance method. 6. Enter a value in the Target height field and then Tap Measure. 7. Tap Store, TSC3 tells you “Observation Stored” and you are ready for the next point. The point name increments (based on the Auto point step size setting).

End the survey 1. From the main menu, Select Measure / End conventional survey. 2. Tap Yes to confirm. 3. Turn off the controller.
