Five instructors and sixteen students were honored at the 20th annual “Excellence in Education” banquet sponsored by the Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce at the Holiday Inn, Grantville, on Wednesday, May 13th. The banquet honored students who were in the top 5% of their respective graduating class. Each student was accompanied to the banquet by an educator who had a profoundly positive influence on his or her life. Through the support of the Chamber of Commerce, local businesses generously sponsored each student and educator. The Chamber members of Lebanon County took this opportunity to congratulate and applaud the achievements of our Valley’s outstanding high school seniors.

HONORS TOP 5%

Each school in Lebanon County takes a turn having a former Excellence in Education honoree give the keynote address each year. This year it was the CTC’s turn to select a former student to speak. Since it was the 20th anniversary of this event, the CTC chose to select two former honorees who happen to be brother and sister to speak at this year’s banquet. Ryan Collins, former Cisco Program student, and Jolene Collins, former Pastry Arts Program student, graciously agreed to speak. Ryan is currently employed as a Security Risk Analyst at Lockheed Martin and Jolene is currently attending Penn State University for Nutritional Science. They are pictured above with their former CTC instructors.

School-To-Career Options The 2009-10 school year was very active with many students participating in the school-to-work program. A total of 136 students participated in either clinical, cooperative education, or shadowing opportunities. These experiences included the Allied Health Science students shadowing in various departments within the Good Samaritan Health System, Health Career Technology students performing their clinical experiences at Cedar Haven and ECC Albright Campus

of Myerstown, and Pastry and Culinary Arts students participating in clinical at Giant Foods, Hotel Hershey, and Hershey Park. Our Child Care Services students served clinical experiences at 19 different childcare centers and elementary schools throughout Lebanon County. Additionally, there were 15 different cooperative education experiences during this school year; several of these students will continue employment with their cooperative education employers.

Computer Repair Technology Network Technology

We spent most of our time together engaged in ex-perience-based projects. These projects offered a change of pace from traditional classroom assign-ments and facilitated learning for students with a variety of learning styles. Students that struggle with writing papers and completing labs may find themselves re-engaged in the course with the help of a project that draws from their own experiences. Projects like these have a lasting impact. I look forward to the fall with the anticipation of another creative and energetic year. Ms. Karen Hershey CRT and Network Instructor

WOW! Can you believe our year together is over? It truly has flown by. As we’ve been winding down the last 2 weeks, I’ve taken some time to reflect on this year, and the students that have made it so wonderful. Each student has played a special role in making up this class. Each student brought with them a unique quality that added a certain touch to our “team.” Each student has also left me with sweet memories I won’t forget. I’d like to share some pictures of some of these memorable events.

“Experience: that most brutal of teachers.

But you learn, my God do you learn.”

Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice

Special Note: Mr. John Balshy passed away on May 27, 2010. He had been an aide in the Law Enforcement Program at the LCCTC for many years. He will be missed by the instructor and all those he met here at the school but he will be missed most by the many students he helped over the years. He will be remembered for his desire “to pass on as much of his knowledge as he could to the next generation of young students to use in their careers”.

Chef Brian Peffley Joins the Fight Against Obesity at the White House

Chef Brian Peffley was one of 50 American Culinary Federation (ACF) chefs invited to the White House to participate in Michelle Obama’s latest “Let’s Move!” campaign. The chefs were selected based on their previous volunteerism with ACF and their Chef & Child Foundation. These chefs are passionate about promoting proper nutrition and fighting the obesity epidemic in America. “We are going to need everyone’s time and talent to solve the childhood obesity epidemic, and our nation’s chefs have tremendous power as leaders on this issue because of their deep knowledge of food and nutrition and their standing in the community. I want to thank them for joining the Let’s Move! campaign,” said Michelle Obama in a White House blog posting May 13th.

Long-time Supporter Donates Items to CTC

Chef Carl Deutsch, CCC, CCE of Philadelphia and a long standing OAC member of the Culinary and Pastry Arts’s programs at the CTC, recently donated resource materials to the program’s career center. These cookbooks and textbooks will be added to the already extensive library that is used by students for research projects and recipe development. Chef Deutsch also donated product posters and DVDs that will further enhance the students resources. Some of the titles donated are from his personal collection and are timeless classics that every aspiring chef would want to add to their own collection. These titles will be marked, so future students will be aware of Chef Deutsch’s contribution to the CTC as well as their education. Chef Deutsch has taken a vested interest in the CTC’s Culinary and Pastry programs, he was on the ACF’s (American Culinary Federation) site teams first visit in 2001 which gave the program its inaugural certification and he lauds it as one of the top programs in the country. Chef Deutsch also takes time to judge Skills USA and NOCTI test’s at the CTC.

Thank You Chef Deutsch for your continued support of our programs and we look forward to using the materials

and recipes you have provided for us!

In October 2009, several LCCTC students and Mr. Jim Myers embarked on the school’s second community service trip to New Orleans, LA to participate in the ongoing reconstruction effort made necessary by “one of the worst disasters since 09-11-01” as described by Mike Fisher, one of the participants. On this trip Mr. Myers and his students worked on the Beecher Memorial Church, a historically significant building in one of the poorest sections of New Orleans. Here, in the student’s own words, are their accounts of the trip: Cory Brown, Welding, grade 11, EL:

In New Orleans we helped the Beecher Memorial Church. This church had at least four feet of water in it for several weeks. We put up dry wall and fixed a hole for a water shut-off valve. We were in New Orleans for a week. We left the church where we were staying at 7:00 AM and worked 8 ½ hours each day. It was a lot of fun and I would like to go back the next time the school goes for work. Bryce Wolfe, Welding, 11, NL:

I have never been outside Pennsylvania, so this trip to New Orleans was not only educational but also a chance for me to see another part of the country, a different way of living, and, in some way, to compare the New Orleans way of life to mine, since I am from a different culture. When we arrived in New Orleans, we stayed at a church where we slept and ate for the five days we were there, but we spent the majority of our time there reconstructing the inside of another church which was ruined through the flood and bad weather. My assignment was to hang dry wall which I enjoyed very much. I also got to install insulation which, by the way, was too itchy for my liking. The work was not easy, but it was worth the feeling of accomplishment and contribution at the end of the trip. I enjoyed my time there very much, and if given the chance, I would do it all over again. Josh Keckler, OTP Metals, 11, NL:

On October 17, 2009 we departed from St. John’s UCC in Jonestown at about 7:00 AM. We traveled all day through Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee and stayed overnight in Fort Payne, Alabama. We had some problems with the trailer and had a two-hour delay while Mr. Myers fixed a wiring problem. We got

in to there at 11:00 PM. The next morning we got up and left before 7:00 AM, traveled through Georgia and into Louisiana, and arrived in New Orleans at 4:00 PM. We stayed at a UCC church named Little Farms UCC. On Monday we got our assignment to help repair a church, Beecher Memorial Church, which was damaged by Hurricane Katrina. There were at least four feet of water inside the church. Everything was taken out after the flood and the rebuild has begun only this year. This church is located in the poorest section of New Orleans. The streets are very rough from the water that was there for more than a month. The ground was very wet. My job for the week was to install dry wall. I was assigned to install the inside and outside walls of the new sound system room and anything else around this room. This was a hard job to do but I learned a lot and it was a good thing to do. On the last day we were assigned the job of taking down some walls to put more sound wire inside them. We accomplished this and re-installed the dry wall. We also had to pull up some flooring to install sound cable. All in all, I learned a lot about the New Orleans area and the people that live there. They have been through a lot of hardship in the past four years and it looks like things are getting back to normal. Mike Fisher, OTP Metals, 12, LH:

My name is Mike Fisher. I am a senior at Lebanon High School. Mr. Myers asked me to go to New Orleans to work on houses or whatever needed to be fixed down there. I want to thank everyone who allowed me to go on this trip to complete my senior project. Going on this trip made me realize the everyday struggles the victims of Hurricane Katrina went through. Working on Beecher Memorial Church made me feel good because now they are one step closer to reopening the church. This was an experience that will impact me the rest of my life. I really feel bad for the people in the Lower 9th Ward because they were the worst hit after the levies broke. We also had an

awesome tour and explanation of what happened. This trip also let me see one of the worst disasters since 9-11-01. So, once again, thank you so much for letting me go. James Myers, OTP Metals

Instructor, Lebanon County CTC: From October 17, 2009 through October 24, 2009 I took five students from the Lebanon County CTC on a field trip to help in the reconstruction of the New Orleans area. This trip is sponsored in part by private donations both from the students and others outside the school. This year we took some welding equipment and other tools which we used during this week of work. When we got there, we got our work assignment which was to help in the reconstruction effort of Beecher Memorial Church. This church is an older church with a rich heritage in the poorest section of New Orleans. The church has been hit with hurricanes and fire two other times. This building had at least four feet of water in it and was heavily damaged during Hurricane Katrina. Our assignment was to put dry wall up and fix a damaged water valve outside the front of the church. In addition, we were assigned some repair work due to changes the engineers made while we were there. We did some high-level work reaching a peak of 30 feet (students did not do this work). We enclosed a sound booth for the new sound system and finished a cement block enclosure around a water shut-off valve. I feel all the young people acted in a manner that would make any parent proud. We had our moments, but worked through them like men and resolved any problems as quickly and completely as possible. With additional school personnel and vehicles we could accomplish even more next time.

The Cornwall Borough Municipal Authority recently constructed a new building at 44 Rexmont Road, and that building includes grounds…grounds that needed to be beautified with well-planned and carefully executed landscaping. Mrs. Barb Henry, the Authority’s administrator, contacted Mr. Meck at the CTC for assistance, and Mr. Meck thought this project would be perfect for OTP Groundskeeping. So Mr. Mike Schultz, the OTP Groundskeeping instructor, went to the site of the proposed project, assessed the work that needed to be done, and created a landscape plan that the Authority promptly approved. There was a lot of work to be accomplished to successfully complete this project. Over the course of more than two weeks, the AM and PM OTP Groundskeeping students studied landscape blueprints, planned the site layout of various plant materials, used a tiller to prepare planting beds, installed and irrigated 70 containerized and B&B (balled and burlapped) plants, and edged and mulched the completed beds with 15 cubic yards of mulch…all during the hottest days of May. Mrs. Sharon Bally, CTC Welding instructor, used the computerized plasma cutter to design and build an impressive sign for the completed landscaping. The students’ final task at the project site was to install the sign which commemorates their work.

Talent Show On May 20th, students and teachers had the opportunity to celebrate the end of another successful school year with an all-day picnic. The second annual Talent Show showcased students and faculty members at the CTC who were brave enough to jump on stage! Hosted by the CTC’s math teacher, Mr. Kerry Hartman and featuring a panel of judges that included Mrs. Kelly Flowers (Guidance Counselor), Mrs. Lauren Holubec (Public Relations Coordinator), and Troy Weimer (former CTC Welding student), who picked the top five contestants. The top three winners, who won based on how loud the audience cheered for them, were: First Place, Donna Joe Torres (Health Careers); Second Place, Bethany Carper (Health Careers); and Third Place, Jacob Capretti (Masonry AM). Games/Lunch

The warm weather made the outside activities pleasant for both students and staff, and the grassy fields were a sea of white as everyone wore their “CTC Picnic T-shirt.” The National Guard brought a football throw and sumo wrestling outfits, and there were multiple games of volleyball, basketball, flag football, and hockey going on all day. Welding students crafted a grill, which Culinary and Pastry students, Administration, and Cafeteria staff cooked on to serve a delicious picnic lunch of hotdogs and hamburgers. CTSO’s sold plenty of cold drinks, baked goods, and other goodies as a fundraiser for their organizations. Alumni and guest Talent Show judge Troy Weimer had only positive things to say at the end of the day: “I can see how the CTC has been working to change its perception within the community. This day has been student-friendly with activities for everyone- great job!” Shop Awards

At the end of the day, the Shop of the Year award was given to Electrical Technology. Other top finishers included: Second Place, Auto Body Technology; Third Place, Masonry; Fourth Place, Visual Broadcast Technology; and Fifth Place, Plumbing & HVAC. Congratulations to Electrical Technology, and thank you to all who participated in “Shop of the Year” activities throughout this past school year!

Special Thanks Special thanks to the following people for making this event happen seamlessly: Mr. Kerry Hartman who acted as emcee, the Diesel Truck Technology class for donating the use of a trailer for the Talent Show, the Masonry class for building steps for the Talent Show, the Child Care program for decorating the Talent Show trailer, the Commercial Art & Visual Broadcasting programs for video and photo coverage of the event as well as creating a banner for the Talent Show, and Culinary & Pastry staff and students, Cafeteria staff and Maintenance for providing food and helping with setup and teardown. Food Sale/Pitchburst

The Spirit Committee planned and organized a food sale to benefit the Rachel Estep Fund this past month. With donated donuts, bagels, coffee, and Rita’s Italian ice, students and faculty had the option of purchasing food in the morning and afternoon with all proceeds going to Ken and Rachel Estep. Students and faculty also had the opportunity to participate in the PitchBurst, a new type of dunk-tank, at the school picnic this year. By paying $1, students and faculty had the opportunity for three chances to “dunk” their friends and teachers. Through these two events, the Career and Technology Center raised over $921! Special thanks to Culinary & Pastry Arts for donating much needed items!

Job shadowing gave the forty-one students in Allied Health Science a unique opportunity to step outside of the classroom and experience what a health care professional’s day is all about. Over thirty-five departments at the Good Samaritan Health System provided experiences that helped the students gain valuable insight in the profession they hope to pursue. The wonderful preceptors introduced the students to their world, thus affording them the opportunity to experience first hand the pros and cons of their professions. One purpose of HOSA is to build confidence of students in themselves and their work by providing opportunities to assume responsibilities and by developing personal and occupational competencies and social skills that lead to realistic choices of careers and successful employment in the health care field. By choosing varied community service projects the Alpha, MuNu and Omega chapters met this purpose. By stepping out of their “comfort zones” and working with individuals with mental, physical and social challenges the HOSA members not only gave back to our

community, they gained life-long learning experiences. In the picture on the left, Annville-Cleona senior Alicia Corle assists a student in the IU13 program at Cedar Crest high school with a Mother’s Day project. Pictured in the right photo are Omega members (l to r) Ashley Stubblebine, Lebanon High; Courtney Ebling, Elco; Jehida Heisey; Elco and Chris Shifflett, Annville-Cleona. The fourteen members of this chapter proved that it took team work and culinary skills as they prepared the meal for over 100 people at the Free Noon Meal site at the Lebanon County Christian Ministry.

In May 2007, Mr. Landis was resting and recovering from recent surgery at Cedar Haven. Throughout his recovery, the Health Careers Technology students paid him many visits at Cedar Haven while on their clinical rotations. When the students found out that he was visiting friends and co-workers at the CTC, they extended an invitation to Mr. Landis to visit the Health Careers Technology program where they had planned a special event for him and his wife Joan. Mr. & Mrs. Landis (pictured right) expressed their appreciation with smiles and hugs.

STAFF AND STUDENTS DONATE FROM THE HEART!

Through generous donations of our staff, many organizations in the community have benefited from our Friday Dress Down Day! Our first $50.00 contribution went to the Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to purchase flagpoles for those who served our country. Many of our own staff, retirees and family members have veterans who are serving or served in the military. Individual flags are not permitted on the gravesites; therefore, an Avenue of Flags is a visible tribute to all of our Nation’s veterans. On January 12, a massive 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti affecting millions of people. Many emergency supplies such as food, water, clothing, medical supplies and hygiene kits were desperately needed. We reached our most profitable day at $515. This amount was matched by the Dixon Foundation, making a total donation of $1,030.00 from the CTC staff. Also on April 1, the Teacher’s Association lead by Laurie Sprandel, Cosmetology Instructor, took a “special collection for the Rachel Estep Foundation” raising over $1,000.00 to offset medical expenses.

$50.00 Donations went to the following organizations:

American Cancer Society

Special Olympics Renova Center

LCCTC Scholarship Fund Developmental & Disability Services

Gap – Flag Pole Fund Lebanon Christian Ministries

Operation Santa Humane League

Children’s Miracle Network Afghan Stray Animal League

HAITI—$515.00 Special thank you to those who contributed!

We have received many rewarding “Thank You” letters!

Article from May, 2010 Edition: As our HCT HOSA discussed all of our fundraising ideas, we decided to focus our attention on a fund that is close to LCCTC’s Heart. The unanimous decision was to raise money for the Rachel Estep Fund. The HCT class began raising money for this project by donating $2.00 per student every Friday, for one month for the privilege to “dress down.” In addition, we sponsored an Easter Basket raffle. The Easter basket was donated by Wertz Candies and the Health Career Technology instructors. For this, each Friday, we went around to classrooms selling raffle tickets for $1.00. In addition, the LCCTC BOS students made and donated several Easter buckets full of home made candy products for consolation prizes. The first drawn winner received an Easter Basket valued at $50.00, created by Wertz Candies in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. With these fundraisers, we are proud to donate $500.00 to the Rachel Estep Fund. Thank you for all who contributed in this process.
