Kaiser Permanente Health Care Career Scholarship Program

Mission – to help students from Oregon and Southwest Washington achieve their dreams of becoming health care professionals.

Scholarships are awarded to students from 132 eligible public high schools in the Kaiser Permanente Northwest service area.

– Previously, 113 high schools were eligible. This year, Kaiser Permanente welcomes 19 public high schools from Lane County to the program, as a Kaiser Permanente medical clinic will open in Eugene in late 2015.

Traditionally scholarships have been for $2,000. This year up to 25% of the scholarships will be for $5,000 or $10,000!

That’s right!

The Scholarship Awards

Kaiser Permanente Northwest strives to award a scholarship to at least one qualified applicant from each eligible high school.

The majority of scholarship awards will be for $2,000.

Up to 25% of the awards will be for $5,000 or $10,000!

– These higher-level scholarships will be awarded to the most qualified applicants from across all eligible schools.

The $2,000 awards will be distributed in fall 2015.

The $5,000 and $10,000 awards will be divided into two equal payments distributed in fall 2015 and fall 2016.

All awards are non-renewable.

Additional Benefits for Scholarship Recipients

Once scholarship recipients have reached their second year of college, they are eligible to:

– Apply for an additional one-time scholarship of $2,000 to be applied toward the fall term of their third year of college.

– Apply for paid summer internships at Kaiser Permanente that are available exclusively to recipients of the Health Care Career Scholarship.

Kaiser Permanente periodically communicates with scholarship recipients to notify them about these opportunities and others as they arise.

Why? Because Kaiser Permanente recognizes that college students need not only financial support but also relevant experiences and connections to achieve their academic and professional goals.

Application Tips

Engage in activities related to your field of interest; this helps demonstrate your motivation and commitment.

Use most or all of the space allotted for essay questions.

– Clear, specific, and concise writing is recommended. However, word limits for essays are tight. Essays that use half or less of the allotted space often do not provide enough information and may convey a lack of effort.

Pay attention to grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Apply in advance of the deadline date to ensure that you have time to ask questions and get technical issues resolved.

Utilize all available resources – if you have a question, peruse the “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQ) section on the application website to see if you can find an answer.

Application Tips

When calling or e-mailing Kaiser Permanente, communicate in a professional manner.

– Voice mail messages – speak clearly; include phone number and first/last name.

– Email messages – include a “subject” line and first/last name.

– Do not request that calls or emails be returned outside of business hours.

Be accountable, even for required materials that someone else is submitting.

– You are responsible for ensuring that the teacher/counselor nominating you and the person writing your letter of recommendation submit these items on time. Incomplete applications result in disqualification.

Send “thank you” notes to nominators and letter writers.
