History• Lebanese wine dates back to

thousands of years.• Phoenicians (ancient residents

of Lebanon) used to make wine and trade it with major cities.

• The word wine, or Cherem in Phoenician, comes from a word in Phoenician alluding to the ebullition of grapes.

• The Phoenicians were also qualified in choosing vineyards based on the favorable climate and terrain.

• Wine was an essential element to the Phoenician establishments and economy.

• In an uncovering of a number of sunken ships in the Mediterranean Sea, Dr. Robert Ballard discovered that one of the ships was the largest one ever discovered. It was repleted with wine originating from Phoenicia.

miracle in Qana, Lebanon, where he changed water into wine.

• Lebanese wine was served for the Passover of the Last Supper among Jesus and his disciples and wine remains to be important in Christian ceremonies.

• The wine was also central to the Jewish Passover observance and remains so.

• In Pagan worship, the wine was used to bless idols.

Types

• You will most often find Red Wine, White Wine, Sweet Wine, and Arak.

• Arak is the most popular alcoholic drink in Lebanon. It is an anis drink mixed with water and ice.
