ST PAUL’S SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT AND AIM
Our Mission Statement
‘Learning Together through Fun, Friendship and Faith’
At St Paul’s Church School we aim to create, within a Christian setting, a safe,
secure and fun learning environment where each and every child feels happy
and enjoys their learning.
We strive to create an atmosphere where the highest standards are set for both
learning and teaching and where all succeed to the best of their ability.
We ensure all children’s well-being is a priority and every individual is valued
as a member of our school/church family.
We strive to foster and develop good communication links within the school
and its wider community. We celebrate the diversity in our community and
encourage a multi-faith dialogue amongst our school family.

Welcome to St Paul’s Church in Wales Primary School
Dear Parents,
As prospective or new parents to our school I would like to warmly welcome you
and introduce you, through this prospectus, to life at St Paul’s.
We are a Christian school with strong links to the local Church and community.
Our vision of learning through fun, friendship and faith is engrained in all we do.
We celebrate the diversity in our community and ensure an ethos of
understanding and respect for different faiths, cultures and beliefs.
We are categorised as a green school by the Welsh Government which reflects our
high standards of learning and teaching, our commitment to wellbeing and our
determination to provide the best possible education and experiences for your
child.
Our latest Estyn report (2012) states that:
“The school is inclusive with a warm, caring, family environment where pupils feel
safe and well cared for. Staff are fully committed to developing pupils’ well-being
and they have a shared understanding of how best to support pupils’ social and
emotional needs.”
I am extremely proud to lead the dedicated and hardworking team here at St Paul’s
and I look forward to working alongside you and your child. If you have any
further questions or would like to arrange a visit please do not hesitate to
contact me.
Yours sincerely

Admissions
Parents who are considering sending their children to St Paul’s are

admitted to the Reception Class up to that number. Where an
existing class number has reached 30, no new admissions will take
place until a place becomes available. Places will be offered during
the school year if there is room in the year group. If the number of
applications does exceed the agreed number the Governors will

Curriculum
FOUNDATION PHASE
St Paul’s follows a curriculum appropriate to younger children – The
Foundation Phase.
Research suggests that children do not begin to benefit from extensive formal
teaching until the age of six or seven. The Foundation Phase Curriculum at
this school is broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated to meet the needs of
all children.
Teachers plan to develop children’s skills across areas of learning. The seven
areas of learning are -
Personal and Social Development, Well Being and Cultural Diversity
Language, Literacy and Communication Skills
Mathematical Development
Bilingualism
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
Physical Development
Creative Development
At St Paul’s, the Foundation Phase staff work hard to acknowledge prior
learning and attainment, offer choices, challenge children with care and
sensitivity and encourage them to move along with their learning.

KEY STAGE TWO
Children are taught through a variety of strategies to allow them to
work at their own pace and right level. Children requiring additional
help may receive this from a Teacher or Teaching Assistant either
within the class or in a small group.
The core subjects are taught discreetly;
English (speaking and listening, reading, writing, spelling and
handwriting)
Maths (number, handling data, shape, space and measure)
Science
Welsh – second language
Religious Education
Children are encouraged to develop skills through our Cornerstones approach. The skills needed for Art, Design and Technology, Geography, History, and some aspect of Science and ICT are taught through a subject led context, which changes every half term. In addition to this the skills needed for PE, Music, Welsh and ICT are
taught discretely.
Personal and Social Education is taught through Circle Time, You
Can do It and Philosophy for Children (P4C). There is a theme for
every half term and children are encouraged to develop values
promoting fun, friendship and faith throughout the school.
We ensure that lessons are interactive, exciting and motivating for
the children by organising educational visits, practical activities,
visits from outside agencies and involvement with the community.
We integrate the Literacy and Numeracy Framework throughout the
curriculum and children are encouraged to develop these skills daily.
Literacy and Numeracy skills are taught following the newly intro-duced Programmes of Study.

Physical Education We encourage all children at St Paul’s to be active healthy learners. P.E.
lessons take place twice a week and include development of gymnastics,
dance and games skills.
There are a range of afterschool clubs that are available to children such as
netball, football, dance, and rugby. We encourage children to pursue
sporting interests outside of school and always celebrate achievements
and talents.
We view swimming as a life skill and children in Years 3—6 take part in a
programme of swimming lessons annually.
We have excellent links with Cardiff City Football club and the Cardiff
Blues who regularly lead sessions in school. Due to the location of the
school we are also fortunate enough to be able to use a range of state of the
art facilities such as Cardiff International Pool and Leckwith Athletics
Stadium.
Welsh Language Welsh is a core subject which is taught throughout the school. Children
are encouraged to use Welsh language throughout the day. Child led
activities also enrich the curriculum during daily “Helpwr Heddiw”
sessions.
Staff work alongside the “Athrowen Bro” to develop the curriculum and
provide fun and engaging activities for all.

Religious Education
In our church school of St Paul’s, Religious Education is recognised as a key
element in the curriculum and is allocated at least 5% of curriculum time for its study. Such an allocation of time does not include the time given to collec-tive worship.
Our Foundation Governors are appointed by the church to serve on the Gov-erning Body and ensures that: Religious Education and Collective Worship play a significant part in the life of the school.
What do we teach in Religious Education?
The school Scheme of work is focused on the Church in Wales’s syllabus and at each Key Stage covers six strands:
Bible
Jesus
Church
Christian Faith and Values
Festivals
Other Faiths
We aim to ensure that the children in school will:
Gain a thorough knowledge of Christianity reflecting the Christian herit-age of this country.
Develop their own personal beliefs and values in the promotion of their spiritual, moral and cultural development
Understand religious beliefs
Reflect on what they have learnt and how it affects their daily life
Carry these messages and knowledge into their adult life.
We encourage all pupils to develop in confidence and character in order to have the courage to do what is right and to challenge what they know to be wrong
Our pupils are given the opportunity to learn about their own and other cul-tures and are taught to respect all faiths, cultures and societies. We celebrate the diversity in our community and work with different faith leaders to en-hance our curriculum.
If parents wish to withdraw their children from religious education and wor-ship, they may make an application at the time of admission in discussion with the Head teacher.
Policies for RE and Collective Worship are available on request or on the school

SCHOOL CHARGES – POLICY STATEMENT
Rationale
The provision of the 1988 Education Reform Act recognises the principle of free school education for all, but also permit the LEA, and hence schools, to charge for optional extras which are pro-vided out of school hours. In order to allow schools to make available as broad and balanced and varied an education as possible within the limits set out under the National Curriculum, schools may request parents to make voluntary contributions.
No pupil however should be penalised because of financial difficulties. Equality of opportunity applies to all.
Objectives
1. To maintain the right to free school education
2. To establish that activities offered wholly or mainly during normal teaching time should be available to all pupils regardless of their parents’ ability or willingness to meet the cost.
3. To offer as wide and varied a programme of ‘optional extras’ out of school hours within the limits of the school budget. Contributions may be sought in order to finance these activities.
4. To invite voluntary contributions for the benefit of the school, or in support of activities or-ganised within the school day in order to maintain full and varied programmes of study.
Policy
The policy relating to charge and remissions follows the guidelines given by the LEA. All educa-tion within the school is free except for the following –
1. Board and lodging charges in respect of Residential Activities occurring wholly or mainly in school hours or undertaken in fulfilment of a syllabus for a prescribed public examination or a statutory duty relating to the National Curriculum or to Religious Education. This charge will be remitted in the case of pupils whose parents are in receipt of family credit or income support.
2. Optional extras i.e. activities taking place wholly or mainly outside school hours are not pro-vided as part of a syllabus for a prescribed public examination or to fulfil statutory duties relating to the National Curriculum or to Religious Education i.e. week-end trips, evening visits.
Costs associated with individual tuition in the playing of a musical instrument whether in or out of school hours which is not provided as part of a syllabus for a prescribed public examination or as a requirement of the National Curriculum.
Voluntary Contributions may be requested from parents in order to maintain the wide range of experiences provided in all subject areas.

Additional Learning Needs We all need help from time to time to overcome difficulties and move forward
in our life. Some children may require a little help to overcome difficulties in a
particular area. In order that they can have full access to all teaching and
learning we are fortunate to have specially trained staff whose main
responsibility is to guide these children through and beyond their
difficulty. In some cases the difficulty will be overcome quickly and no
additional, long-term help is required.
Some children, however, continue to need help and support and an Individual
Education Plan (IEP) may be drawn up. An IEP sets out small steps, which a
child needs to accomplish before they can move on with their learning. IEPs
are written and reviewed each term.
When there is continued concern about a child’s progress, additional advice
and/or assessment may be requested from the County’s Achievement and
Inclusion Service. Some children may then require a statement of
Special Educational Needs. This ensures that the school is able to provide
any support necessary with the appropriate guidance from additional
professionals. A full SEN policy is available on request or from the school’s website.
Mrs Justine Ryland is our SENCO, who will be able to support and advise
you, if you have any particular concerns about your child’s needs.
More Able and Talented Our strengths all lie in different areas this is as true for children as it is for
adults. We celebrate achievement at every level. Children who show
particular strengths in academic areas are supported and challenged to reach
their full potential through the use of Individual Challenge Plans. These may
be used at different times throughout your child’s school career and will help
to strengthen their ability. The children play a vital role in setting and
reviewing their own challenges. Creative and sporting talents are equally as
valued and we ensure we celebrate achievements in and out of school. If you
feel your child has a talent that we may not be aware of please speak to the
class teacher or Mrs Ruth Stewart our Inclusion and Achievement Leader.

Equal Opportunities
Each individual pupil shall have equal value and equal
entitlement within the school’s overall plan.
Each pupil, irrespective of gender, ability, cultural and ethnic
background should experience a balanced, broad and
differentiated curriculum. This curriculum should be equitable
with regards to
Access to learning opportunities
In relation to the personal esteem accorded to individual children
Appropriate arrangements to ensure that pupils with special
needs have full access to the whole curriculum – no pupil will be
unnecessarily deprived of any curricular opportunities. High
attaining children will be considered to have needs for which
provision will be made.
The school is part of a wider multi-cultural community. Thus the school’s curriculum will encourage sympathetic awareness and under-standing of cultural diversity.
Pupils with Disabilities
Parents of pupils with disabilities should follow the school’s
admission procedure, which is based on equal opportunities.
The school is able to provide for pupils with a range of disabilities.
There are ramps and widened doors to enable wheelchair access, a
disabled toilet and aids for the visually impaired. Children with
hearing difficulties are provided with individual hearing
enhancement aids as appropriate.
Children with disabilities experience the same curriculum and are
treated on the basis of equal value and entitlement in all areas of
school life.

Sex Education
Sex Education in the school falls within the context of a planned and
co-ordinated programme of Health Education within the wider context of the
Science syllabus and Personal and Social Education (PSE) provision. Some
aspects of Sex Education in the school will be included as part of the statutory
content of the Science Scheme of Work namely –
1. Knowing that living things produce their own kind
2. Knowing that human babies develop at different rates and that they have special needs
3. Being able to name parts of the body e.g. arm, leg and understand the concept of male and female
4. Being able to describe the main stages in the human life cycle
Other aspects of sex education are additional to the statutory requirements and include
5. Knowing about personal safety e.g. know that individuals have rights over their own bodies and that there are differences between good and bad touches: begin to develop simple skills and practices, which will help maintain personal safety
6. Appreciating ways in which people learn to live and work together: the im-portance of listening, discussing, sharing and caring, showing tolerance and understanding, the importance of developing stable relationships within a fam-ily life, the importance of a mother and father and the sacrament of marriage
7. Understanding the importance of equal opportunities
Parents will be informed when their children ask specific questions which their teacher or Headteacher feels requires parental involvement.

Complaints St Paul’s Church in Wales Primary School is staffed by teachers and support staff who are not only qualified and expert in their own field, but who also, have chosen to work with children because they care for children and wish to help them in every way
possible .
Nevertheless, as in any organisation, things from time to time arise which may lead to a parent wishing to express some concern. A concern is not a complaint and should not be treated as such by the parent or the school. Only a very small number of concerns raised by parents need to be investigated using the formal procedure.
Any concern should always be raised with the Headteacher in the first instance where every effort should be made to resolve the difficulty. For further details please see our complaints policy on our school website or a copy can be requested from the school office.

Child Protection St Paul’s School, along with all schools, has a recognised role in
protecting children from abuse. The school follows the provision
of the Children’s Act as part of the National Child Protection
Framework, the All Wales Child Protection Procedures.
There are clear school procedures on the management of
‘suspected’ or ‘disclosed’ abuse where abuse may be physical,
sexual, and emotional or neglect. From time to time these
procedures may result in a referral to Children’s Services.
Please note that school staff are not allowed to investigate
‘suspected’ or ‘disclosed’ abuse beyond the initial stage of
consulting and discussing their concerns with the Headteacher.
Where there are reasonable grounds for concern referral will be
made to the Social Services Child Protection Unit by the Child Protection Officer Mrs R Morteo or the Deputy Child Protection Officer Mrs K Toozer.
As sometimes these concerns are not substantiated, parents are asked to be understanding in the knowledge that the school is first and foremost acting with the safety of children in mind.
School Security Access to the school grounds is restricted during the school day to
one access controlled gate and entry to the building is restricted to
one access controlled door.
The building is protected by steel railings and gates, an intruder
alarm system, electrically and manually controlled steel shutters
on all doors and windows and CCTV.
