Learning Spaces and Effective Pedagogy.
What does our space ‘say’?
Introduction This document has been designed to support school leaders to
facilitate dialogue on the design of their schools‟ learning
space, both physical and virtual.
Through engagement in this process, groups reflect on
effective pedagogy: How does „our space‟ support teacher
actions that promote student learning?
Purpose/Audience School leaders could use this document to guide dialogue
with a broad-ranging team: admin, students, teachers, support
staff, BOT‟s …
Message “Learning spaces convey an image of the intuitions philosophy
about teaching and learning. Space can either enable or
inhibit different styles of teaching and learning”. (ELI, 2004

Effective Pedagogy
Revisit :
What constitutes quality learning/teaching in our school?
How does this compare with pages 34-37 of the NZC? What idea/s
does this offer us?
NB. To inform the reality of this process we need to keep asking a range of people: How do you
learn? When you wake up and you need to learn something what actions do you engage in?
CONNECT
How does ‘our space’ currently reflect and promote what we believe about
quality learning and teaching?
Display each aspect of effective pedagogy around the room, participants use’ post-it’s to list
examples of how our space (physical and virtual) is used to support quality teaching and
learning.
Staff may wish to take a walk around the school. Capturing pictures of places, spaces, signs,
displays, language that promotes the schools beliefs about quality learning and teaching.
What aspects of quality learning and teaching are well supported by ‘our
space’? What other possibilities exist?

What else is possible now and in the future?
How might the implementation of these ideas support our school vision?
