Class Placements for 2020 We are about to begin our student placement process and enrolments are a critical factor in determining; numbers of year levels, straight classes versus multi-age classes, year level locations, space, and staffing. As with previous years, every effort will be made to maximise single year levels however enrolment numbers at certain year levels makes this incredibly difficult to achieve. We are mindful of not placing students in multi age classes over two consecutive years. We thank the families for their input to the placement process. Students will have an opportunity to identify some friends they would like to be with yet we inform you that we guarantee only 1 friend. Once the placement process is complete, there will be no opportunity for moving students from one class to another. Term 4 Week 3 Friday 1 November 2019

Learning for Life

It is wonderful to be back from my very restful holiday.

I was thrilled to receive photos and updates of the Colour Run and STEM Day, and felt like I missed out on all the fun!

I was very proud of staff and students who showcased their STEM Learning by hosting leaders and teachers from across the State School system.

Family Holiday/Travel If a family holiday/travel is planned during term time and including into the commencement of 2020 school year, a student Exemption From School form needs to be collected from the Front Office, completed and returned for Principal approval. Parent Survey 2020 We would like to encourage all parents to complete our school survey.

We value your feedback on our performance as it reinforces our commitment to continuously improving our practices. 2020 Booking Form With this year fast coming to an end, the service is in the process of looking at our numbers and bookings for 2020. To assist with this planning, a 2020 booking form is now available. Similar to previous years, please note that OSHC bookings will not carry over to the new school year and a new booking form will need to be completed. If you require casual bookings, please record this on the form so we are aware. Forms are required before the end of this term – if you are unsure about work for next year this is fine, just let us know. We also require notification of any new siblings who will be beginning at East Adelaide in 2020. If you child will not be requiring OSHC in 2020 please advise.

Fee Increase 2020 Last term, the East Adelaide Governing Council approved a fee increase. Fees are reviewed regularly at the service and are increased from time to time to fund the OSHC program. Commencing January 2020, After School Care fees will increase from the current $16 to $18 per session. Commencing December Vacation Care, the Incursion and Excursion fees will be increased by $5 – i.e. an Incursion will be $60 and an Excursion will now be $65. Basketball/Yoga Term 4 The service is running Basketball (Rec - Year 4) on Thursday afternoons as part of our program from 4.00 to 5.00pm. These sessions are run by the Stay Active company. We are also continuing to offer Yoga on a Wednesday afternoon from 4.00 to 5.00pm. Please contact us if your child is interested in participating. Extra-Curricular Activities Please advise the service if your child is attending an activity during After School Care so we are aware of your child’s location across the afternoon. End of Year Concert

Thanks to all parents, caregivers and staff who completed the survey for this year’s end of year concert “A Disney Christmas”. The committee have reviewed the feedback and the evening will be held in the Gym on Thursday 5

December. We will be having a larger stage

set up in front of the glass windows in the gym, to enable extended audience viewing through the roller doors. This year we are dividing the concert into two sessions with the R-2 students performing from 5.00 to 6.00pm and the year 3-7 classes performing from 6:15 to 7:15pm. We will have a whole school practice during the day so all students will have the opportunity to enjoy watching all performances. The children have been rehearsing their items ready for the night and can’t wait to present to their loved ones. We look forward to seeing you all there! Larissa Maher and the Christmas Concert Committee

Kids’ Pantry (Canteen) News

Did you know the canteen is actually called “Kids’ Pantry’? The students voted for this name about twelve years ago.

This term, we will be advertising various specials on Konnective, including Salad Combo Packs, Fresh Fruit Salad Jelly and Custard and by popular demand, the Borg Burger. Please keep an eye out for these in coming weeks. We are always looking for new volunteers to assist in the canteen, especially as some families will be leaving the EAS community when their children commence high school next year. The canteen cannot operate without the wonderful support of volunteers, so please email [email protected] or call us on 8362 5221 if you are able to assist. Lisa and Diane Canteen Managers

STEM Works Showcase at EAS On Thursday 24 October, we had 30 visiting teachers and leaders from across the state visit our school to see STEM in action.

We were one of 9 schools across the state whom have opened their doors to other educators as part of showcasing high quality, effective pedagogy through STEM.

11 teachers and their classes put their work on show for others to learn about the solution fluency practices we use during STEM learning.

The participants were “blown away” by the high level of student engagement, intellectual challenge, collaborative learning and deep thinking/learning. They witnessed different classes working on their next lesson in a series of lessons focused on the topic of sustainability.

Our teachers and students should be extremely proud of their work. It was a credit to each teacher who volunteered for this, having up to 10 adults observing them, plus a film crew in their room, whilst they facilitated a 45-minute lesson. The day ended with several teachers being part of a Q&A panel to further respond to final questions from the visiting educators.

We would like to acknowledge the students and teachers in rooms 9,10, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 27, 28 and Fleur, teacher of Science.

We thank Rob Davies and the film crew from our school community. Rob will be developing the video for future professional development, induction purposes and a shortened promotional snapshot of the School’s STEM practices to be featured on our website.

STEM in Year 3 The Year 3 classes are part way through their STEM inquiry journey based upon our whole school theme of ‘sustainability’. The students have been immersed in learning information about sustainability provided by field experts such as architects, environmental scientists and builders as well as through digital media, peer tutorage and reference resources. The students formulated questions of how and why our school carried out certain practices and became quite critical, mindful and reflective regarding everyone’s impact upon sustainability in regard to an individual, family, class, school, state, country as well as planet. Once the students were enlightened with their knowledge about sustainability, they were asked to apply it within the context of a challenge which was to draw upon known sustainable practices around the world to inform their design of a sustainable school. All sustainable features of their designs are required to be justified / explained to demonstrate their understanding. We defined a problem as ‘Many schools today use unsustainable practices and use too many resources. We need to implement ways of being more sustainable and using fewer resources. The students have been guided through the cyclical engineering stages of solution fluency (the 6 Ds) whilst applying scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical dispositions and skills. Examples of scientific knowledge required includes positioning of the sun, insulators and transfer of heat etc.

Examples of technological knowledge required includes use of the internet and programs such as Tinker Cad etc.

Examples of engineering knowledge required includes selection of suitable materials and joining techniques etc. Examples of mathematical knowledge required includes use of scale, sizing and 3-dimensional nets etc. The students have been working on their challenge collaboratively in self-selected groups.

They have been able to refer to their current stage of solution fluency (Define, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver and Debrief), use effective team work, identify their sustainable features through labelling and explanations as well as think creatively and critically to solve problems.
