Groups 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10We have been exploring our animal habitats. We have used choice boards to decide what is living and non-living. We have had fun coming to school in our pyjamas. We have created 3D Lego towers to represent data graphs. We have been learning to touch count one at a time. We are making animals to go into our classroom habitats.

Middle Years Learning Centre LeaderMiddle Years have had a great start to the school term with lots of exciting things happening and planned for. Students in Groups 24, 25, 33, 34, 39, 40, 41 & 42 will be attending Camp Manyung this week on Tuesday and Thursday night. Camp is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience and there are lots of fun activities planned. I would like to thank all of our staff members for their extra support of our students on camp.

Students are learning about habitats this semester and have commenced the Habitat Heroes Project being run by the Wyndham council. Students in the Middle Years went on excursion to Werribee Zoo to explore the habitats of all of the animals at the zoo and the build on their understanding of the different needs of many types of animals, flora and fauna. Students will soon begin designing the habitat that will be built over the school holidays, ready for planting and development in Term 4.

Week 5 is Science Week and Week 6 is Book Week, there will be whole school celebrations and learning experiences for Middle Years over these weeks so please look out for any notices on Seesaw about these events.

Groups 39, 40, 41 & 42PLT 2 have been very excited about camp and this week, the wait was finally over! PLT 2 have absolutely loved engaging in new and unfamiliar experiences at Camp Manyung! Our students were given the opportunity to experience many different outdoor activities such as bush cooking, the flying fox and tree surfing. The students even went on some initiative bush walks where they were required to search for interesting landmarks and then use their problem solving skills. This included landmarks such as the ‘broken bridge’ and then ‘spider’s nest’. Many students from our classrooms demonstrated some excellent collaboration and team work skills, leaving our staff super impressed. Thank-you to all the students who behaved so impressively, thank-you to all the staff to worked so hard to support our students at camp and of course, a special thank-you to Kacey and Benita for doing such a great job organising this experience for our students. From Ainslie, Grace, Benita and Sonja.

BRC NewsWeek 3 was a busy week at BRC with many excursions happening for the students. On Thursday Jess took a group of students to the All Abilities Metro Netball Championship at the State Netball Centre. We won our first three games advancing to the grand final against Rosamond School. Zoe starred in the grand final scoring 12 of our 13 goals. We won 13-2 to take out the championship. Well done to all students involved, they not only played excellent netball but other schools and umpires commented on the excellent behaviour and the high level of sportsmanship shown by all BRC students.

On Friday we had all students out attending excursions in the city. The year 8&9 students travelled to the Queen Victoria Market to experience many different cultures and cuisines from around the world. The students enjoyed looking at the variety of stalls and items that are sold whilst also collaborating with their peers within the community.

The year 10 students travelled to the ACMI centre at Federation Square where they attended the Screen Worlds exhibition. The students enjoyed exploring different aspects of moving image within film, television, video games, virtual reality and digital art.

The year 10 students have been busy preparing for the Real Industry Job Interviews with the Wyndham City Council. The students have been engaged in their English lessons, working on identifying the correct text structure and language features of a resume and covering letter. Representatives from the Council have been helping students with their application and giving them interview tips. Students will attend a morning tea at the council to prepare for their interviews, which are scheduled for the 22nd of August.

The year 10 students have also been attending transition days at the VCAL and Cayleys Road campuses. These transitions days allow students to prepare for their pathways for year 11 and 12. Students are supported to travel to and from the campuses and experience the programs that could be offered to them.

VCAL NewsLast week the VCAL Year 12 students received their individual jackets. Student were able to choose a name for the back of their jacket. Axel investigated this initiative last year researching the design, cost and manufacturing. All the students are very proud to wear their new warm jackets.

‘Animate your life’ is a part of the Inner Melbourne Vet Cluster. This semester a group of our students are attending this program on a Thursday in South Melbourne. They are learning about Photoshop and shortcuts for windows.

Our VCAL students are also attending KANGAN TAFE in Broadmeadows participating in the BWE program. This term students are enrolled in warehousing and horticulture.

This week VCAL students were involved in the RYDA road safety education program at Broadmeadows. Students participated well during discussions and hands on activities. The message from the sessions was ‘put your phone away whilst driving’.

CRC NewsAgain another busy fortnight at CRC. Year 9/10’s have been to the zoo as part of their Inquiry Learning and will be adopting an animal to sponsor and visit. I am looking forward to the voting process to see which animal gets chosen. As part of our enterprise learning students have also been harvesting and taking our vegetables and herbs to the zoo.

Students in year 11/12 have started a new enterprise selling Fresh Fruit and Vegetables boxes. The vegetables are delivered to the campus in bulk, and the students work tasks are to pack into delivery boxes. This requires correct handling, packaging even amounts, and presentation. They then advertise and sell for $30.

Students who have been volunteering at the Werribee Mansion Gardens, have propagated and produced lots of trees and plants that were sold at the market on the weekend. It is very pleasing that we were able to contribute to the market achieving $10,000 ! The work from our students is held in high regard

and a big thanks goes to Tracey Berryman who has established this excellent working partnership.

Werribee Mansion Heritage GroupWerribee Mansion Heritage group is a shared program with students from both Cayleys Road and VCAL. Six students work alongside the volunteers at the program.

Students have been assisting volunteers to propagate different varieties of grapes, softwood cuttings and herbs. Students do a variety of tasks, also working in the Orchard. On 27th July students helped to set up for the Market stall and later on the weekend of 29th July the Heritage garden had a market which was open to the wider community.Tracy Berriman

NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES WESTERN MELBOURNE AREA

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new, national approach providing individualised support and services for people with disability. The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

The NDIS commenced operation in some parts of the State on 1 July 2016 and will rollout progressively across the remainder of the State, Area by Area, until it is fully operational on 1 July 2019. Key information for Western Melbourne is as follows:

Area start date Local government areas Local Area Coordinator

1 October 2018 Hobsons Bay, Maribrynong, Melbourne, Moonee Valley, Wyndham

Brotherhood of St Laurence

Participants will transition to the NDIS based on where they live, not where they attend school.

Eligibility is focused on lifelong, functional impairment. NDIS eligibility information is available on the NDIS Access Checklist which is on the NDIS website.

There are two possible pathways for students with a disability to access the NDIS:

1. Students who are receiving specified disability programs or supports will have their details automatically provided to the NDIA. Your school will be able to advise you if your child is receiving one of these supports. These students may be contacted by the NDIA up to six months prior to their Area’s start date and invited to test their eligibility for the scheme.

2. Students who do not receive any of the specified programs or supports can directly contact either the NDIA or the NDIA Local Area Coordinator to test their eligibility. This can commence up to six months prior to their Area’s rollout date.

Further information Contact your NDIA Local Area Coordinator or the NDIA for information about the NDIS. Your school has also been provided with general information about the NDIS and what it means for students with disabilities.
