EDUCATION & CAREER SKILLS
Sawyer Site
Power Hour—This is our designated opportunity for mem-bers to work on their assigned school work. To keep members motivated, points are awarded for each page they complete as well as reading in 20 minute increments. The points earned allow members to participate in a 'rewards day' activity if they meet the goal established by BGC staff. The rewards day takes place the week after the session ends. Members can choose to participate or par-ents can sign their member up to require their participa-tion in this activity daily.

*NOSL - The NASA Out-of- School Learning Program
(NOSL) is a curriculum put together by the education
team at NASA’s John Glenn Research Center. The aim is to
involve members in science, technology, engineering, and
math (S.T.E.M.) challenges, as well as to develop the criti-
cal thinking skills to create space exploration devices, air-
propelled cars, drop-copters, and more. One of the excep-
tional aspects of NOSL is the members’ opportunity to
participate in live video chats with NASA engineers who
are engaged in real-life projects relating back to the
S.T.E.M. challenges completed by the members.
Registration required.
Stride Academy - Stride Academy is an online learning en-
gine used to boost a member’s comprehension in mathe-
matics, science, language arts, and reading. This objective
learning engine automatically adjusts the curriculum to
higher or lower grade levels to individualize learning and
provide both remediation and enrichment.
Coding - A volunteer with a background in computer pro-
gramming and education will guide our members through
the ins and outs of coding using the "Scratch” curriculum
combined with his personal expertise. Members will have
the opportunity to create characters, animation, games,
stories, and more all from their own imagination. Keep
calm and code on!

*Career Launch Our nation's teens need support and guidance in setting career goals and improving their em-ployability skills. Career Launch encourages Club members ages 13 to 18 to assess their skills and interests, explore careers, make sound educational decisions, and prepare to join our nation's work force. NOTE: This club is a prerequisite for teens that are interested in partici-pating in the Teen Center's Snack Shack, where they will further develop important skills.
Academic Time/Engage your Brain Teens can utilize this time to study or get their homework completed. It is also a time to turn off the electronics and enjoy a game with a friend or someone new! Break out Monopoly to see how many properties you can own or, maybe world domina-tion, with the game of Risk, is more your cup of tea. How about a game of UNO or perhaps Magic the Gather-ing? Sit down, chat, and enjoy the company of friends while having fun.

Our members will have the chance to write to members at a variety of BGC locations in hopes of learning more about the different experiences they have at their local club.
Jeopardy – “Answer: This trivia-based club is being offered at the Hatch Center at the Boys and Girls Club of Door County.” Question: What is Jeopardy? Correct! Now you have control of the board. That’s right! America’s most beloved game show is making its way from the TV to the club. Alex Trebek’s fall schedule was full, but make no mistake: This…Is…Jeopardy.

HEALTH & LIFE SKILLS Teen Center Teen Cuisine - This program will encourage healthy eating behaviors and food preferences. Representatives from UW-Extension will come into our Teen center to facilitate this program. Teens will be taught proper preparation of simple snacks and cooking techniques for complicated dishes. The best part is that they can enjoy the fruits of their labor by eating what they have created when they are done!
SPORTS, FITNESS & RECREATION
Sawyer Site
Parachute – An all-time gym favorite comes to Sawyer this session. Members will use teamwork and communication to keep “popcorn” popping, stop snakes from escaping, and avoid hungry sharks. Sounds fun, doesn’t it?
Capture the Flag – One of our members’ favorite summer pastimes makes its transition to the fall as both sites will be offering Capture the Flag this session. In this fast-paced, action-packed game, two teams will work together using skill and strategy to retrieve the flag from the base of their opponents. They must then return the flag back to their own base without getting caught along the way. The game is sure to get the legs moving and the heart pumping resulting in fun for all.
Cooperative Games – With the beginning of a new school year, it’s important that our members know what it means to be part of a club. In order to better help them understand, both of our sites will be running a series of cooperative games. These achieve the dual goals of getting members moving while encouraging all to work together as a team. Cooperative Games also serve as great icebreakers for our newer members to become more accustomed to Club life.
Yoga – An alternative to what we typically consider recre-
ation at the club, yoga is about taking a break from daily
pressures and reduce stress by focusing on our breathing
and bodies. Our members will learn several yoga poses
throughout the eight-week course, allowing for increased
flexibility and greater ability to focus.
Hatch Center
Just Dance – Hey Hatch members, it’s time to put on your, your, your, your, your boogie shoes. Using the popular video game Just Dance, members will learn various dance steps to many of today’s hits. After they become dancing machines, they will learn a choreographed dance to the Michael Jackson classic Thriller, in preparation for their debut at Sturgeon Bay’s annual Thrills on Third event on October 28!
